Experimental infection and pathology of clade 2.2 H5N1 virus in gulls.

During 2006, H5N1 HPAI caused an epizootic in wild birds, resulting in a die-off of Laridae in the Novosibirsk region at Chany Lake. In the present study, we infected common gulls (Larus canus) with a high dose of the H5N1 HPAI virus isolated from a common gull to determine if severe disease could be induced over the 28 day experimental period. Moderate clinical signs including diarrhea, conjunctivitis, respiratory distress and neurological signs were observed in virus-inoculated birds, and 50% died. The most common microscopic lesions observed were necrosis of the pancreas, mild encephalitis,

Renal disease related to Waldenström macroglobulinaemia: incidence, pathology and clinical outcomes.

The incidence and prognostic impact of nephropathy related to Waldenström macroglobulinaemia (WM) is currently unknown. We performed a retrospective study to assess biopsy-confirmed WM-related nephropathy in a cohort of 1391 WM patients seen at a single academic institution. A total of 44 cases were identified, the estimated cumulative incidence was 5·1% at 15 years. There was a wide variation in kidney pathology, some directly related to the WM: amyloidosis (n = 11, 25%), monoclonal-IgM deposition disease/cryoglobulinaemia (n = 10, 23%), lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma infiltration (n = 8, 18%), l…

Facial extention of ear pathology: infected cholesteatoma causing a parotid abscess.

A man in his early 30s presented with right-sided preauricular swelling and facial oedema. He had a history of acid injury to his right ear as a child resulting in pinna deformity and subsequent blind sac closure of the external auditory canal. Imaging showed abnormal ear anatomy and abnormal density of the right parotid gland. Antibiotic therapy prevented progression but did not resolve the symptoms. Therefore, the infected area was surgically drained. This showed an underlying cholesteatoma, a benign but locally destructive condition where keratinising squamous epithelium grows in the middle

Updates in Molecular Pathology of Central Nervous System Gliomas in Adults.

Central nervous system (CNS) tumors are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms divided into two broad categories, glial and non-glial. Non-glial tumors are derived from such diverse structures as the pineal gland, meninges, germ cells, and hematopoietic cells, as well as metastases. Primary glial neoplasms, or those which originate from astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, or ependymal cells, include astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, ependymomas, and mixed gliomas. Each entity has a unique morphology and pattern of biologic behavior which portends a distinct prognosis and outcome. Individual outcomes sho

Extended draf IIb procedures in the treatment of frontal sinus pathology.

OBJECTIVES: Draf IIb approach provides wide, unilateral access to the frontal sinus. This approach can be extended without destruction of the contralateral frontal sinus drainage pathway, performed during Draf III (modified Lothrop) procedure. There is limited data in the literature regarding the use of modified Draf IIb procedures. METHODS: Patients treated with extended Draf IIb procedures in a single center were retrospectively assessed. RESULTS: Ten patients were identified, including 2 cases of osteoma, 1 inverted papilloma, 1 carcinoma, 5 mucoceles, and 1 chronic rhinosinusitis patient

Retinal ganglion cell dendrite pathology and synapse loss: Implications for glaucoma.

Dendrites are exquisitely specialized cellular compartments that critically influence how neurons collect and process information. Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) dendrites receive synaptic inputs from bipolar and amacrine cells, thus allowing cell-to-cell communication and flow of visual information. In glaucoma, damage to RGC axons results in progressive neurodegeneration and vision loss. Recent data indicate that axonal injury triggers rapid structural alterations in RGC dendritic arbors, prior to manifest axonal loss, which lead to synaptic rearrangements and functional deficits. Here, we prov

Open subpectoral biceps tenodesis: reliable treatment for all biceps tendon pathology.

Long head of the biceps (LHB) tendon pathology is a common cause of pain in the shoulder. Pathology encountered includes biceps tendon tears and tendonitis, biceps anchor or superior labral tears, and biceps subluxation or instability. Current surgical treatment options for LHB disorders include tenotomy and tenodesis. Tenodesis prevents cosmetic deformity and biceps cramping with activity. Open subpectoral tenodesis anatomically restores the length-tension relationship of the biceps muscle and removes all diseased biceps from the bicipital groove. The authors present their technique of open s…

Mesenchymal Extratesticular Tumors and Tumorlike Conditions: From the Radiologic Pathology Archives.

Both benign and malignant tumors and tumorlike conditions can arise from the nonepididymal extratesticular tissues. Benign tumors are far more common than malignant tumors, with lipoma being the most common lesion found at this site. Several imaging features can help narrow the differential diagnosis of these lesions, including the presence of fat and imaging features suggestive of fibrous tissue. Lesions that contain fat represent lipoma, liposarcoma, or angiomyofibroblastoma (AMF)-like tumor. If enhancing soft tissue is present in conjunction with fat, the differential diagnosis narrows furt

Occipital calcified pseudoneoplasms of the neuraxis (CAPNON): understanding a rare pathology.

Calcifying pseudoneoplasms of the neuraxis (CAPNON) are rare and typically benign lesions that can occur anywhere within the central nervous system. Aetiology of this lesion is unclear and surgical removal is usually curative. We present a 24-year-old male patient with a history of occipital migraines who was admitted after sudden onset seizure and loss of vision. CT and MRI demonstrated a small calcifying lesion in the right temporo-occipital lobe. The patient underwent gross total resection of the tumour mass and pathological analysis revealed a CAPNON. The preoperative diagnosis of CAPNON r

The transitional association between β-amyloid pathology and regional brain atrophy.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) associated with brain atrophy and cognitive decline. The functional form to model the association between Aβ and regional brain atrophy has not been well defined. To determine the relationship between Aβ and atrophy, we compared the performance of the usual dichotomization of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Aβ to identify subjects as Aβ+ and Aβ- with a trilinear spline model of CSF Aβ. METHODS: One hundred and eighty-three subjects with mild cognitive impairment and 108 cognitively normal controls with bas

Cardiac pathology and molecular epidemiology by avian leukosis viruses in Japan.

Epidemiological studies suggest that retroviruses, including human immunodeficiency virus type 1, are associated with cardiomyopathy and myocarditis, but a causal relationship remains to be established. We encountered unusual cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and mitosis in Japanese native fowls infected with subgroup A of the avian leukosis viruses (ALVs-A), which belong to the genus Alpharetrovirus of the family Retroviridae and mainly induce lymphoid neoplasm in chickens. The affected hearts were evaluated by histopathology and immunohistochemistry, viral isolation, viral genome sequencing and expe…

Pathology of human plaque vulnerability: mechanisms and consequences of intraplaque haemorrhages.

Atherothrombotic diseases are still major causes of inability and mortality and fighting atherothrombosis remains a public health priority. The involvement of repeated intraplaque haemorrhages (IPH) in the evolution of atherothrombotic lesions towards complications was proposed as early as 1936. This important topic has been recently revisited and reviewed. Histological observations have been corroborated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of human carotid atheroma, identifying IPH as the main determinant of plaque evolution towards rupture. Beside the intimal integration of asymptomatic lumi

Multiple organ involvement by alpha-synuclein pathology in Lewy body disorders.

Lewy body (LB) diseases are characterized by alpha-synuclein (AS) aggregates in the central nervous system (CNS). Involvement of the peripheral autonomic nervous system (pANS) is increasingly recognized, although less studied. The aim of this study was to systematically analyze the distribution and severity of AS pathology in the CNS and pANS. Detailed postmortem histopathological study of brain and peripheral tissues from 28 brain bank donors (10 with Parkinson's disease [PD], 5 with dementia with LB [DLB], and 13 with non-LB diseases including atypical parkinsonism and non-LB dementia).
