Can expert testimony and demonstrations influence juror perceptions of witness inattentional blindness?

Witnesses may experience inattentional blindness (IB), failing to notice crimes occurring when focusing elsewhere. Witnesses who experience IB may be perceived negatively by jurors. The current studies aimed to determine whether expert testimony and demonstrations of IB can improve perceptions of witness IB. In two experiments, some participants completed a demonstration prior to reading a trial transcript containing the testimony of two witnesses (one of whom experienced IB). In both studies, some participants then read the testimony of an expert witness on the topic of IB within the trial. T…

Patients' Perceptions of Stress Urinary Incontinence Treatment: A Scoping Review of Qualitative Studies.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Treatment options for female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) are often offered in a stepped-care approach. This scoping review maps the available qualitative research on women's perceptions of the treatment decision-making process for SUI and identifies knowledge gaps. METHODS: This scoping review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis g…

Perceptions, availability and use of vasopressors for septic shock in emergency care settings in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis carries a disproportionately high mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa. Current international guidelines for management of septic shock advocate for initial fluid resuscitation followed by vasopressors if there is ongoing concern for hypoperfusion. Emerging data suggest patients in sub-Saharan Africa who receives large fluid boluses may have increased mortality and thus earlier initiation of vasopressors may have clinical benefit. Little data exists on the perceptions, availability and use of vasopressors in Tanzania, which may impact the feasibility of this strategy. We aimed to…

Host perceptions of an undergraduate semester abroad: strengthening partnerships in global health education.

OBJECTIVES: As global health education becomes more embedded in university curricula, the availability of experiential learning opportunities in this field has expanded as well. These programmes offer students valuable exposure to diverse cultural perspectives and help develop essential competencies in global health. However, concerns have arisen regarding the persistence of colonial-era dynamics, power imbalances and the potential negative impacts on host organisations in low- and middle-income countries. Much of the existing literature on this topic centres on short-term medical student expe

From Prominent to Proportionate: Social Perceptions of Patients With Prominent Ears Undergoing Otoplasty.

Prominent ears are one of the most common congenital craniofacial differences in children. While not functionally impairing, their visibility can cause psychosocial distress, particularly from peer ridicule. Otoplasty is frequently performed to modify auricular projection and normalize appearance; however, its effect on social perception by lay observers remains unclear. This study evaluated how otoplasty influences public perception of pediatric patients. Preoperative and postoperative photographs of 2 patients were rated by 998 adult respondents through an online survey. Participants evaluat…

Perceptions of medication and procedural abortion among medication abortion patients in Mississippi, USA.

Drawing upon 46 interviews with respondents who had medication abortions in Mississippi in 2021 or 2022, I explore retrospective perceptions of medication and procedural abortion. Respondents saw medication abortion as akin to a `natural' miscarriage, and offered greater comfort, privacy, and control over both the abortion experience and practical considerations like travel costs. When asked if they would have preferred procedural abortions, respondent accounts invoked information gleaned online and from family and friends, explicit fears of surgery and pain, and perceived risks of psychologic…

Evaluation of knowledge, perception, and attitude of malaria burden in the Upper River region of The Gambia.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased malaria interventions, the Upper River Region of The Gambia still faces a higher malaria burden compared to other parts of the country. This issue may be related to the population's knowledge of malaria, as well as environmental and socioeconomic factors that influence their prevention and treatment choices. Therefore, this study focused on assessing the level of malaria knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes among the residents of the Upper River Region, as limited studies have been conducted across the region's seven districts. METHODS: To achieve the study's ob…

Assessment of the knowledge, attitudes, and risk perceptions of pharmacy students regarding HIV/AIDS.

Therefore, having an adequate understanding of HIV among undergraduates helps them at their practice sites. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and risk perceptions of pharmacy students regarding HIV/AIDS. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among pharmacy students from December 2023 to April 2024 using structured questionnaires. We collected the data from randomly…

Inflamed or Infected Molluscum Contagiosum Lesions: Pediatrician Perceptions and the Risk of Antibiotic Overuse.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a common pediatric skin infection caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus. Lesions often become inflamed prior to self-resolving. This phenomenon can mimic bacterial superinfection, although true superinfection of MC lesions is thought to be rare. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective study of MC patients 0-18 years of age who were diagnosed with MC and had a bacterial culture of one or more inflamed molluscum lesions over a 10-year period. Data collected included the prevalence of true infection on culture, specific pathoge

Understanding the perceptions of risks versus the benefits of COVID-19 vaccinations in Manyara, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Few would argue that vaccines have not saved more lives than any other medical invention. Eradicating smallpox, reducing wild poliovirus, saving the world from the Ebola virus, and reversing the trend of COVID-19 infections, vaccines are common references in revolutionising global health. These successes were not achieved without varying perceptions of the risks of diseases versus the benefits of vaccination. AIM: The study aimed to assess whether the perceived severity versus benefits of vaccination significantly influenced COVID-19 vaccination. SETTING: This study was conducted…
