Clinicopathologic study of six cases of meningitis and meningoencephalitis in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Three fatal cases of purulent meningitis and one fatal case of thromboembolic necrotizing meningoencephalitis occurred in chimpanzees from t … ajority of cases, the primary site of infection was the upper respiratory tract. After reducing the population density, initiating a vaccination program using a commercially available human polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine, and changing the cleaning procedure of the animal facilities, no other cases of meningitis or meningoencephalitis have occurred in the chimpanzee …

Studies on a temperature-sensitive mutant of fowl plague virus having a mutation in gene 7 coding for the M protein.

A fowl plague virus (FPV) temperature-sensitive mutant, ts 303/1 having a ts mutation in gene 7 coding for the matrix (M) protein has been obtained. The mutant induced synthesis of virus-specific RNA and polypeptides as well as ribonuclear protein (RNP) formation in cells under non-permissive conditions; however, haemagglutinin cleavage was reduced, functionally active haemagglutinin and neuraminidase were absent and virions were not formed. In mutant-infected cells at 36 degrees C haemagglutinin cleavage was also reduced and virions formed had an altered NP:M ratio as well as a decreased haem

High-density lipoprotein in chronic renal failure and after renal transplantation.

Serum high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and apoprotein (apo) A concentrations were significantly reduced at the time of renal transplantation in 26 patients with chronic renal failure. In a prospective evaluation the behaviour of HDL concentrations after grafting was found to depend on renal function. Graft function was sustained in 19 patients, in whom HDL-cholesterol and apo A concentrations increased to lie within normal limits by six months after the operation. Successful transplantation also restored to normal the lipid and protein content of HDL as expressed by the ratio of HDL

Genomic stability and differential expression of type V cif genes in Wolbachia with variable cytoplasmic incompatibility phenotypes in spider mites.

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is a globally significant agricultural pest frequently infected by the endosymbiont Wolbachia. Wolbachia induces cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) with varying intensity across geographic populations. Despite the importance of CI, its molecular mechanisms in T. urticae remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that CI differences are driven by both Wolbachia (wTurt) strain variations and host nuclear background. The wTurt genome harbors two pairs of cif genes (cifA1-B1 and cifA2-B2), both phylogenetically classified as Type V. Genomic analy

Forensic age estimation using knee MRI: application of the Vieth staging system in a French population.

Forensic age assessment is a critical process in determining an individual's legal status, particularly in the evaluation of the 18-year threshold, where reliable methods are essential. In this study, epiphyseal maturation of the knee was analyzed in a French population using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based on the Vieth staging system. A total of 512 knee MRI examinations (280 males, 232 females; age range 9-30 years) were retrospectively evaluated. The distal femoral and proximal tibial epiphyses were assessed using the six-stage Vieth classification on T1-weighted and fat-suppressed p

Eating well for ageing well: the role of diet and nutrition in promoting healthspan and longevity.

Healthy ageing and longevity have emerged as urgent public health priorities amid global population ageing and declining birth rates. This review synthesises empirical evidence highlighting the essential role of diet and nutrition in preventing chronic diseases and supporting functional independence in later life. The review was organised using a problem-solving approach to address three core questions: 'What' evidence links food and nutrition with positive health outcomes; 'Why' do specific dietary components affect biological ageing - via mechanisms such as nutrient sensing, inflammation mod

Presence of Dendritic Cell Subsets in Sentinel Nodes of Breast Cancer Patients Is Related to Nodal Burden.

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) are both the first site where breast cancer (BC) metastases form and where anti-tumoral immunity develops. Despite being the most potent antigen-presenting cells, dendritic cells (DCs) located in a nodal tissue can both promote or suppress immune response against cancer in SLNs. METHODS: In SLNs excisions obtained from 123 invasive BC patients, we performed immunohistochemistry (IHC) for CD1a, CD1c, DC-LAMP, and DC-SIGN to identify different DCs populations. Then we investigated the numbers of DCs subsets in tumor-free, micrometastatic, and macrometasta

Anthropometric measures and their association with risk factors for cardio-metabolic diseases in Kenyan adults.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cardio-metabolic diseases (CMD) is drastically increasing worldwide. Anthropometric measures of fat accumulation are correlated with CMD and Metabolic Syndrome (MS), but few studies have addressed this association in sub-Saharan African populations. AIM: To investigate the association between anthropometric features, MS and other CMD risk factors in a population from Kenya. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study including 1405 Kenyans, anthropometric measurements including visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT)

Atherogenic Risk Assessment among Persons Living in Rural Uganda.

Background. Hypertension and dyslipidemia are independent risk factors for coronary heart disease and commonly coexist. Cardiovascular risk can be reliably predicted using lipid ratios such as the atherogenic index, a useful prognostic parameter for guiding timely interventions. Objective. We assessed the cardiovascular risk profile based on the atherogenic index of residents within a rural Ugandan cohort. Methods. In 2011, a population based survey was conducted among 7507 participants. Sociodemographic characteristics, physical measurements (blood pressure, weight, height, and waist and hip

High Prevalence of Sarcopenia in Korean Patients after Hip Fracture: a Case-Control Study.

Sarcopenia-related falls and fractures are increasing worldwide due to the aging population. The purpose of this study was to 1) evaluate anthropometric characteristics related to hip fracture in Korean patients, 2) investigate sarcopenia prevalence in hip fracture (HF) and non-hip fracture (NF) groups, and 3) investigate the correlation between sarcopenia and osteoporosis. This case-control study examined 359 HF and 1,614 NF normal populations using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. We performed whole-body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry to analyze body composition

Drivers of Intensity and Prevalence of Flea Parasitism on Small Mammals in East African Savanna Ecosystems.

The relative importance of environmental factors and host factors in explaining variation in prevalence and intensity of flea parasitism in small mammal communities is poorly established. We examined these relationships in an East African savanna landscape, considering multiple host levels: across individuals within a local population, across populations within species, and across species within a landscape. We sampled fleas from 2,672 small mammals of 27 species. This included a total of 8,283 fleas, with 5 genera and 12 species identified. Across individual hosts within a site, both rodent b

EDARV370A associated facial characteristics in Uyghur population revealing further pleiotropic effects.

An adaptive variant of human Ectodysplasin receptor, EDARV370A, had undergone strong positive selection in East Asia. In mice and humans, EDARV370A was found to affect ectodermal-derived characteristics, including hair thickness, hair shape, active sweat gland density and teeth formation. Facial characteristics are also largely ectodermal derived. In this study, taking advantage of an admixed population of East Asian and European ancestry-the Uyghur, we aim to test whether EDARV370A is affecting facial characteristics and to investigate its pleiotropic nature and genetic model. In a sample of

Characterization of the Metabochip in diverse populations from the International HapMap Project in the Epidemiologic Architecture for Genes Linked to Environment (EAGLE) project.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified hundreds of genomic regions associated with common human disease and quantitative traits. A major research avenue for mature genotype-phenotype associations is the identification of the true risk or functional variant for downstream molecular studies or personalized medicine applications. As part of the Population Architecture using Genomics and Epidemiology (PAGE) study, we as Epidemiologic Architecture for Genes Linked to Environment (EAGLE) are fine-mapping GWAS-identified genomic regions for common diseases and quantitative traits. The Heart of New Ulm Project: using community-based cardiometabolic risk factor screenings in a rural population health improvement initiative.

Awareness of cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk factors can improve the health of individuals and populations. Community-based risk factor screening programs may be particularly useful for quantifying the burden of cardiometabolic risk in a given population, particularly in underserved areas. This study provided a description of a screening platform and how it has been used to monitor the cardiometabolic risk profile within the broader Heart of New Ulm Project, which is based in a rural Minnesota community. A cross-sectional, descriptive examination of baseline screening data indicated t

Quantitative ultrasound for the detection and management of osteoporosis.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) appears to be developing into an acceptable, low-cost and readily-accessible alternative to dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) in the detection and management of osteoporosis. Perhaps the major difficulty with their widespread use is that many different QUS devices exist that differ substantially from each other, in terms of the parameters they measure and the strength of empirical evidence supporting their use. But another problem is that virtually no data exist outside of Caucasian or Asian populations. In general, heel QU

Rabies and dog population control in Thailand: success or failure?

Despite a success in reducing rabies deaths from almost 200 to less than 20 annually, this may not be considered a success. More than 400,000 persons required rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in 2003, more than 4 times as many as those in 1991 [93,641 cases in 1991; 183,815 in 1996 and 350,535 in 2001]. The number of samples submitted for testing in rabies diagnostic laboratories has been declining. However, the percent of samples that were confirmed infected with rabies during the 10 year period remained unchanged; within a range of 23 - 30% (MOPH report). Of the 6 million dogs roughly

Competitive coexistence of two Pneumocystis species.

Pneumocystis are fungal pathogens of mammalian lungs that can cause lethal pneumonia in immunocompromised hosts. In some mammals, coinfections of genetically distinct Pneumocystis populations have been identified, but the nature of their interaction and its significance are unknown. Two species that infect rats, Pneumocystis carinii and Pneumocystis wakefieldiae, were studied over a 6-year period, representing approximately 700 generations of Pneumocystis. Population densities of each species were analyzed within the framework of the Lotka-Volterra competition model, which revealed the two spe

West Nile virus and the threat to the UK.

West Nile virus (WNV) is an RNA virus and a member of the Flaviviridae family. The recent geographical expansion of WNV into areas where no … are present in the UK and birds migrate to the UK from areas of endemic WNV activity. However, the population density of mosquitoes is relatively low and therefore the risk of WNV being transmitted in the UK is thought to be low. We lack sufficient information on the ecology of the virus, and on mosquito populations, to accurately determine this risk. Clinicians ar …

Bubonic plague: a metapopulation model of a zoonosis.

Bubonic plague (Yersinia pestis) is generally thought of as a historical disease; however, it is still responsible for around 1000-3000 deaths each year worldwide. This paper expands the analysis of a model for bubonic plague that encompasses the disease dynamics in rat, flea and human populations. Some key variables of the deterministic model, including the force of infection to humans, are shown to be robust to changes in the basic parameters, although variation in the flea searching efficiency, and the movement rates of rats and fleas will be considered throughout the paper. The stochastic
