Modeling the upper airway: A precursor to personalized surgical interventions for the treatment of sleep apnea.

An accurate benchtop model was developed to mimic the different forms of human upper airway collapse in adult sleep apnea patients. This was done via modeling the airway through digital imaging. Airway representative models were then produced in two steps via a customized pneumatic extrusion 3D printing system. This allowed the pressure of collapse and planes of collapse to be manipulated to accurately represent those seen in sleep apnea patients. The pressure flow relationships of the collapsible airways were then studied by inserting the collapsible airways into a module that allowed the cha…

Effect of Magnet Position on Tipping and Bodily Tooth Movement in Magnetic Force-Driven Orthodontics.

The goal of our study is to launch magnetic force-driven orthodontics. This continuous study investigated the influence of magnet position on tipping and bodily tooth movement, using 3D printing technology and digital analysis. Orthodontic typodont models (TMs) for space-closure were 3D printed to mimic maxillary central incisors. Nd-Fe-B magnets were placed in the middle third (Model-M), and the cervical third (Model-C), of the tooth. TMs, before and after movement, were digitally scanned and superimposed. The 3D digital coordinates (X, Y, and Z axes), and rotations (yaw, pitch, and roll) of …

Teacher candidates' mastery of phoneme-grapheme correspondence: massed versus distributed practice in teacher education.

Matching phonemes (speech sounds) to graphemes (letters and letter combinations) is an important aspect of decoding (translating print to speech) and encoding (translating speech to print). Yet, many teacher candidates do not receive explicit training in phoneme-grapheme correspondence. Difficulty with accurate phoneme production and/or lack of understanding of sound-symbol correspondence can make it challenging for teachers to (a) identify student errors on common assessments and (b) serve as a model for students when teaching beginning reading or providing remedial reading instruction. Electrochemical Impedance Immunosensor Based on Self-Assembled Monolayers for Rapid Detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 with Signal Amplification Using Lectin.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a predominant foodborne pathogen with severe pathogenicity, leading to increasing attention given to rapid and sensitive detection. Herein, we propose an impedance biosensor using new kinds of screen-printed interdigitated microelectrodes (SPIMs) and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) for signal amplification to detect E. coli O157:H7 with high sensitivity and time-efficiency. The SPIMs integrate the high sensitivity and short response time of the interdigitated electrodes and the low cost of the screen-printed electrodes. Self-assembling of bi-functional 3-dithiobis-(sulf

Chemical stimulation sustains bioluminescence of living light materials.

Bioluminescence offers a powerful tool for real-time, label-free sensing for living materials. However, conventional approaches often rely on mechanical stimulation, which is difficult to standardize, localize, and sustain. Here, we introduce a chemical strategy to stimulate and sustain bioluminescence in the marine dinoflagellate Pyrocystis lunula, enabling durable, adaptive, light-emitting living materials. By embedding P. lunula into 3D-printed, alginate scaffolds, we engineered architecturally stable constructs with long-term cellular retention, viability, and light-emitting capacity. Expo

Research on design of soft gripper by dielectric elastomer actuator based on quadrangular star honeycomb support.

This study proposes a soft gripper with dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) and 3D printing quadrilateral star honeycomb support due to the insufficient structural stiffness when grasping irregular objects. According to the bending requirement of the soft gripper and the electrostrictive properties of the dielectric elastomer (DE), a quadrangular star honeycomb structure with zero Poisson's ratio is proposed as the supporting structure for the soft gripper to enhance its stiffness. The mechanical properties of the honeycomb structure were analyzed via the finite element method (FEM) to improve…

Self-organizing bioceramic granules with wave-dissipating architectures for bone void filling.

Granular bone substitutes readily adapt to irregular defects but lack initial stability, often resulting in granule migration and clinical complications. Inspired by the structural stability of wave-dissipating concrete blocks, which protect breakwaters from wave impact, we fabricated wave-dissipating bioceramic granules using digital light processing-based 3D printing and evaluated their potential for bone repair. Of six wave-dissipating designs, Tetrapod, Dolos, and Hexaleg were demonstrated to self-organize into the architectures featuring optimal intergranular space for bone ingrowth and m…

Bioinspired 3D-Nanoprinted Optical Sensilla for Bidirectional Respiratory Monitoring.

Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) are the leading causes of death worldwide. Monitoring both inhalation and exhalation is crucial for lung function assessment and patient outcomes. However, current sensors lack sufficient stability and also lack the ability to differentiate between inhalation and exhalation, limiting clinical effectiveness. Inspired by bat-wing hair structures, we report an all-optical fiber sensilla for bidirectional airflow detection. Optical Merkel cells and microhairs are integrated at the fiber tip through femtosecond laser 3D nanoprinting. Bidirectional airflow interac…
