Exploring the impact of artificial intelligence on radiation dose reduction in urological imaging: a systematic review from EAU endourology.

BACKGROUND: Patients with urological conditions often undergo recurrent computed tomography (CT) imaging, which results in cumulative radiation exposure which can be deleterious. Artificial intelligence (AI)- based technologies, including Deep Learning Image Reconstruction (DLIR), have emerged as a potential strategy to reduce radiation dose in CT imaging while maintaining image quality. This systematic review aimed to quantify the benefits of AI-based techniques in urological CT imaging. METHODS: A systematic search of Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus was conducted. Studies assessing AI-base

A case series and literature review on extramedullary hematopoiesis in patients with thalassemia treated with conformal external beam radiation treatment.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a compensatory response to chronic anemia, commonly observed in thalassemia. EMH can cause neurological complications such as spinal cord compression and paraparesis, as well as other site-specific compressive symptoms necessitating timely intervention. While medical management and surgery have been explored, radiation therapy (RT) remains a safe and effective alternative. This case series presents five patients with thalassemia who developed symptomatic EMH. All patients exhibited compressive symptoms, including lower limb weakness, sensory deficits, and

Alleviation of radiation-induced genomic damage in human peripheral blood lymphocytes by active principles of Podophyllum hexandrum: an in vitro study using chromosomal and CBMN assay.

This study was aimed to evaluate the protection against radiation of human peripheral blood lymphocytic DNA by a formulation of three isolated active principles of Podophyllum hexandrum (G-002M). G-002M in various concentrations was administered 1h prior to irradiation in culture media containing blood. Radioprotective efficacy of G-002M to lymphocytic DNA was estimated using various parameters such as dicentrics, micronuclei (MN), nucleoplasmic bridges (NPB) and nuclear buds (NuB) in binucleated cells. Certain experiments to ascertain the G2/M arrest potential of G-002M were also conducted. I

Deoxyribonuclease I is essential for DNA fragmentation induced by gamma radiation in mice.

Gamma radiation is known to induce cell death in several organs. This damage is associated with endonuclease-mediated DNA fragmentation; however, the enzyme that produces the latter and is likely to cause cell death is unknown. To determine whether the most abundant cytotoxic endonuclease DNase I mediates gamma-radiation-induced tissue injury, we used DNase I knockout mice and zinc chelate of 3,5-diisopropylsalicylic acid (Zn-DIPS), which, as we show, has DNase I inhibiting activity in vitro. The study demonstrated for the first time that inactivation or inhibition of DNase I ameliorates radia

Dicentric chromosomes and gamma-H2AX foci formation in lymphocytes of human blood samples exposed to a CT scanner: a direct comparison of dose response relationships.

Experiments using the induction of dicentric chromosomes (dicentrics) as well as the gamma-H2AX foci formation in lymphocytes of blood samples from a healthy donor were performed to directly evaluate the radiation sensitivity of both biological endpoints. For computed tomography scans at dose levels from 0.025 to 1 Gy, a linear-quadratic dose-response relationship for dicentrics and a linear dose-response relationship for gamma-H2AX foci were obtained. The coefficients of the dose-response relationship for dicentrics are alpha = (3.76 +/- 0.29) x 10(-2) Gy(-1) and beta = (5.54 +/- 0.45) x 10(-

Overhead arm support reduces radiation exposure during complex endovascular aortic repair.

BACKGROUND: Complex endovascular aortic surgery has been associated with increased fluoroscopic radiation exposure. The radiation dosage necessary for visualization is dependent on the amount of tissue penetration required. Elevation of a patient's arms above their head during endovascular surgery could improve visualization by removing the arms from the field of view. Furthermore, it might reduce the radiation dose required. In the present study, we sought to determine the effect of arm elevation on radiation exposure during endovascular treatment of thoracoabdominal aneurysms. METHODS: All

A case-control, mono-center, open-label, pilot study to evaluate the feasibility of therapeutic touch in preventing radiation dermatitis in women with breast cancer receiving adjuvant radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic touch (TT) is a non-invasive commonly used complementary therapy. TT is based on the use of hand movements and detection of energy field congestion to correct imbalances. Improvement in subjective symptoms in a variety of clinical trials has been seen with TT. The effect of TT during radiotherapy for breast cancer is unknown. METHODS: Women undergoing adjuvant radiation for Stage I/II breast cancer post conservative surgery were recruited for this cohort study. TT treatments were administered three times per week following radiation therapy. Feasibility was defined as

[Radiosensitization induced by vemurafenib].

The recent use of vemurafenib, a specific inhibitor of BRAF, has led to a significant improvement in disease-free survival and overall survival of patients treated for a BRAF-mutated metastatic melanoma. This new class of drugs is not devoid of side effects, including skin effects. In particular, its association with concomitant radiotherapy should be taken into consideration, vemurafenib appearing to be radiosensitizer. The radiation oncologist must be aware of this potential toxicity, which is not uncommon in clinical practice.

Wearable Light Sensors Based on Unique Features of a Natural Biochrome.

Overexposure to complete solar radiation (combined ultraviolet, visible, and infrared) is correlated with several harmful biological consequences including hyperpigmentation, skin cancer, eye damage, and immune suppression. With limited effective therapeutic options available for these conditions, significant efforts have been directed toward promoting preventative habits. Recently, wearable solar radiometers have emerged as practical tools for managing personal exposure to sunlight. However, designing simple and inexpensive sensors that can measure energy across multiple spectral regions with

Modern radiation techniques in early stage breast cancer for the breast radiologist.

Partial breast irradiation (PBI) and ultra-hypofractionated whole breast irradiation (uWBI) are contemporary alternatives to conventional and standard hypofractionated whole breast irradiation (WBI), which shorten treatment from 3 to 6 weeks to 1-2 weeks for select patients. PBI and accelerated PBI (APBI) can be delivered with external beam radiation (3D conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) or intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)), intraoperative radiation (IORT), or brachytherapy. These new radiation techniques offer the advantage of convenience and lower cost, which ultimately improv

The Burden of Radiation Exposure During Transcatheter Closure of Atrial Septal Defect.

Radiation reduction in the pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory is well-suited for targeted quality improvement (QI) interventions. Transcatheter atrial septal defect (ASD) closure was chosen for this QI project based on a homogenous procedural population and inter-operator variability in radiation usage, with the aim to reduce radiation exposure during ASD device closure by 50% over 1 year. The aim for this project was defined and a Key Driver Diagram (KDD) was created with three domains for change: modification of procedural practice, reporting and monitoring/feedback, and team engag

Delayed wound infection after supracricoid partial laryngectomy following failure of high dose radiation.

Past radiation therapy is known as a major risk factor promoting post-supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCPL) complications. Risk of post-SCPL complications may further increase following failure of high dose radiation; in these patients, wound infection may become evident more than 1 month after an uneventful post-surgical course. By defining this complication as "Delayed Wound Infection" and reviewing the clinical features, we intended to elucidate the mechanism, risk factors, and management of this post-SCPL complication. Between 1997 and 2009, 60 patients received SCPL. The incidence of p

12th Yahya Cohen Memorial Lecture: The cellular and molecular basis of radiation-induced sensori-neural hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Sensori-neural hearing loss (SNHL) is a frequent complication of conventional radiotherapy for head and neck tumours, especially nasopharyngeal carcinoma. To manage radiation-induced ototoxicity appropriately, an understanding of the cellular and molecular basis of this complication is necessary. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A medline search of relevant literature was done, focusing on the radiation-induced cellular and molecular processes that lead to hair cell death in the cochlea. RESULTS: Radiation-induced SNHL occurs in the cochlea, with the retro-cochlear pathways remaining fun

Overview of radiotherapy-induced chronic pain in childhood cancer survivors: A narrative review.

Radiotherapy is an important aspect of oncological treatment in several childhood cancers. However, radiotherapy is known to have numerous side effects, including detrimental effects on growth, neurocognitive impairment, and the development of secondary malignancies. One less studied long-term side effect of pediatric radiotherapy treatment is chronic pain. While the short-term toxicities of radiotherapy resolve over a few weeks to months, the chronic pain caused by radiotherapy-induced tissue damage can significantly affect children's quality of life. As long-term childhood cancer survivors a
