Associations Between Healthcare Providers' Stigmatizing Attitudes Toward People Living with HIV and People Who Use Drugs: A Canonical Correlation Analysis.

While extant literature demonstrates that healthcare providers' stigmatizing attitudes negatively impact care for people who use drugs (PWUD) and people with HIV (PWH), limited research has explored how these stigmas are interrelated. This study examines the relationships between multiple dimensions of stigma-including cognitive, affective, and role-based attitudes-toward PWUD and PWH. We operationalized these dimensions using two validated instruments. The Drug and Drug Problems Perception Questionnaire (DDPPQ) assessed five role-based dimensions of provider attitudes toward PWUD: role adequa

Emergency department patients' self-perceived medical severity and urgency of care: The role of health literacy, stress and coping.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to (1) compare the agreement between triage acuity and emergency department (ED) patients' self-perceived medical severity and urgency, and (2) examine how health literacy, stress, and coping relate to patients' perceptions of medical need and urgency. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, observational study, 171 patients from a large acute care teaching hospital in Southwestern Ontario were recruited in autumn 2020. English-speaking adults (18 + years) with Canadian Triage Acuity Scale (CTAS) scores from 2 (emergent) to 5 (non-urgent) were included. Patients complet

Predicting individual treatment response in alcohol use disorders: a reverse translational proof-of-concept study.

The development of medications for alcohol use disorders (AUD) faces stagnation, as promising drugs failed to translate in clinic. Screening on homogeneous groups of animals drugs later tested on heterogeneous clinical cohorts may contribute to the translational gap. We hypothesized that a preclinical model of AUD accounting for inter-individual heterogeneity would predict the lack of efficacy of a drug that failed clinical trials (Memantine) and the efficacy of an approved AUD medication (Naltrexone). Baseline alcohol drinking, motivation, and cued reinstatement were screened in NIH genetical

Cultural group and self-construal moderate the association between expressive suppression and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms.

Few studies have considered the influence of cultural factors on the associations between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and key emotion regulation strategies, such as expressive suppression and reappraisal. This study investigated the influences of cultural background and self-construal orientation on PTSD symptoms and both suppression and reappraisal. Chinese Australian (n = 129) and European Australian (n = 140) trauma survivors completed an online survey assessing suppression and reappraisal (Emotion Regulation Questionnaire), cultural values (Self Construal Scale), and PTSD symptoms

Identity Development and Disruption in Older Adults During COVID-19: A Longitudinal, Mixed-Methods Study.

OBJECTIVES: Disruptive life events, such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, may trigger adjustment and revision of older adults' identities. This mixed-methods study explored how older adults perceived their identities changing as a result of the pandemic, and how such identity dynamics related to pandemic-related events and well-being. METHODS: Participants included 2,248 older adults who participated in the longitudinal COVID-19 Coping Study spanning from April/May 2020 to April/May 2021. Mean age was 67.8 years, 70% were women, and 93% were White. We used qualitative them

Are the self-stigma and perceived stigma of patients treated with methadone or buprenorphine still a problem fifty years after the marketing authorization for opioid agonist treatment? The observational STIGMA study.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the opioid overdose crisis, understanding the barriers to seeking, attaining and remaining in treatment for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) is a public health issue. To date, very few studies have assessed the "self-stigma" (i.e., the internalization of negative societal attitudes and stereotypes about oneself, leading to self-judgment) and "perceived stigma" (i.e., the belief that others hold negative attitudes towards oneself due to a particular condition) experienced by patients with OUD receiving opioid agonist treatment (OAT), and none have done so in

Mnemonic monitoring in anosognosia for memory loss.

OBJECTIVE: Anosognosia, or unawareness, for memory loss has been proposed to underlie cognitive functions such as memory and executive function. However, there is an inconsistent association between these constructs. Recent studies have shown that compromise ongoing self-monitoring of one's memory associates with anosognosia for memory loss. Yet to date it is unclear which memory monitoring mechanisms are impaired in these patients. In this study, we examined the extent to which temporal monitoring or orbitofrontal reality filtering (e.g., ability to monitor the temporal relevance of a memory)

Promoting positive body image and intuitive eating in women with overweight and obesity via an online intervention: Results from a pilot feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Body dissatisfaction and dietary restraint are established risk factors for eating disorders and are also prevalent in individuals who are overweight and obese. Studies have shown that online prevention programs can lower these risk factors. The aim of this feasibility pilot study was to estimate effects of a 12-week online health promotion and eating disorder prevention program in a sample of women with overweight or obesity, but without binge eating. METHODS: The program was evaluated in an uncontrolled pre-post-follow-upstudy over 12 months. Outcome measures were eating disorde

Brain networks of happiness: dynamic functional connectivity among the default, cognitive and salience networks relates to subjective well-being.

Subjective well-being (SWB) reflects the cognitive and emotional evaluations of an individual's life and plays an important role in individual's success in health, work and social relationships. Although previous studies have revealed the spontaneous brain activity underlying SWB, little is known about the relationship between brain network interactions and SWB. The present study investigated the static and dynamic functional connectivity among large-scale brain networks during resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in relation to SWB in two large independent datasets. The

Satisfaction with sexual life in people living with HIV/AIDS: the persistent weight of the fear of transmission.

Sexual life is an important dimension of quality of life, which may be affected by the fear of transmission in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), despite the fact that antiretroviral therapy prevents person-to-person transmission. We, therefore, aimed to explore the sexual life satisfaction of PLWHA and its correlation with their fear of HIV transmission and self-esteem. Consecutive adult PLWHA from seven HIV care facilities in the Rhone-Alpes region, France, were asked to complete a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire concerning sociological and medical data, satisfaction with sexual

Perceptions of free will in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a quantitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore perceptions of free will in the repetitive behaviors of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and to explore their relation with core clinical characteristics. METHODS: Experiences of free will were assessed with the Symptomatology And Perceived Free will rating scale (SAPF) in 295 subjects with a lifetime diagnosis of OCD. Patients' scores on the SAPF were subjected to an explorative principal axis factor analysis (PAF). Factor scores were regressed on five OCD symptom dimensions and on seven clinical variables: illness duration, s

Schizotypal traits and their relation to rejection sensitivity in the general population: Their mediation by quality of life, agreeableness and neuroticism.

Schizotypal traits are a cluster of personality styles suggesting a potential liability for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Interpersonal schizotypal traits include cognitive disorganisation which consists of social anxiety, and introvertive anhedonia which consists of a lack of pleasure in social activities. Rejection sensitivity is evident all along this continuum. This study aimed to determine whether psychosocial quality of life (QOL), neuroticism and agreeableness mediates the relation between schizotypy and rejection sensitivity. Three hundred and eighteen participants from a predomina

The effectiveness of Dutch Cell Dogs in correctional facilities in the Netherlands: a study protocol of a quasi-experimental trial.

BACKGROUND: Many former inmates recidivate, resulting in high costs for societies worldwide. Evidence based treatment practices may not work in prisons, due to detainees' lacking motivation, impaired well-being, and an unsafe group environment. One attempt to improve social group climate and well-being is the use of Prison-based Animal Programs (PAP). Using a quasi-experimental design, the aim of the current study is to examine the effectiveness of one such PAP in the Netherlands: Dutch Cell Dogs (DCD). METHODS/DESIGN: Participants (N = 256) from 12 justice centers, including psychiatric, juv

Nonmedical benzodiazepine use in adults with alcohol use disorder: The role of anxiety sensitivity and polysubstance use.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The nonmedical use of benzodiazepines-defined as use without a prescription or at a dose or frequency higher than prescribed-is increasing among adults in substance use disorder treatment and is associated with risk for overdose. The aim of the current study was to characterize the prevalence of nonmedical benzodiazepine use among adults seeking treatment for alcohol use disorder and to examine whether nonmedical benzodiazepine use was associated with: (1) polysubstance use and (2) greater anxiety sensitivity. METHODS: A sample of 461 treatment-seeking adults with a

Is Cybervictimization Associated with Body Dissatisfaction, Depression, and Eating Disorder Psychopathology?

Studies carried out in nonclinical samples have found an association between cyberbullying victimization and eating disorder (ED) psychopathology (negative emotions, low self-esteem, unhealthy eating behaviors, and body dissatisfaction); however, these previous studies were carried out with participants without an ED diagnosis. To extend the knowledge in this area of research, we aim to confirm these associations in two different samples: on the one hand, a sample composed of participants with ED diagnoses and, on the other hand, a sample composed of participants at high risk of ED. In study 1

Validation of a four items version of the Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia scale (the mini-FROGS) to capture the functional benefits of clinical remission.

OBJECTIVES: We previously developed the Functional Remission Of General Schizophrenia (FROGS) scale demonstrating first, reliable assessment in a cross-sectional study and second, good time-stability. The purpose of the present analysis was to propose a shorter version (mini-FROGS), more compatible with the limited time available in a psychiatric visit, focusing on the functional domains that have higher likelihood of being improved with higher and/or longer symptomatic remission in different cultural backgrounds. METHODS: We used multiple regressions to find the most informative items explai
