PURPOSE: Ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO) is a standard treatment for ulnar impaction syndrome and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries. However, complications such as delayed union, nonunion, and refracture after implant removal remain controversial issues. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of modified step-cut USO using an osteotomy guide and a specialized ulnar shortening plate designed to maximize bone contact, enhance fixation stability, and reduce the invasiveness of the procedure.
METHODS: A retrospective case series involving 23 consecutive patients (23 w

The purpose of this article is to provide a clinically oriented classification system for superior labral injuries based on etiology, pathoanatomy, and associated biceps-labrum anchor complex injuries. The proposed classification system is based primarily on the mechanism of superior labral injuries as an ABCD classification (A, acute trauma; B, Bankart extension from instability; C, chronic repetitive overhead activity; and D, degenerative). The recognition of the cause is paramount to appropriately treating these patients, especially when considering operative treatment. Traumatic injuries i

INTRODUCTION: Dislocations of the elbow are the second most frequent upper-body injury after shoulder dislocations, comprising 11-28% of all elbow injuries. Complex elbow dislocations pose challenging management due to the involvement of critical stabilizing structures. This study aimed to investigate functional and subjective outcomes (MEPS, DASH, Oxford score) in 44 patients with complex elbow dislocations who underwent surgery between 2018 and 2020, with subgroup analysis focusing on gender and age differences.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients treate

Background Rugby is a popular contact sport played with little to no protective clothing. There exist few comprehensive studies investigating emergency department (ED) visit patterns for rugby-related injuries. We hypothesize that male athletes remain the most common patient demographic to present to the ED with rugby-related injuries and that the number of patients diagnosed with soft tissue injuries such as sprains and strains decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database was examined for rugby injuries from January 2012 throug

BACKGROUND: A diaphragmatic hernia is a prolapse of the abdominal organs into the thoracic cavity through a hole in the diaphragm. Traumatic diaphragmatic injuries are rare and usually occur after blunt or penetrating thoracic or abdominal traumas. Blunt diaphragmatic rupture rarely accounts for immediate mortality and may go clinically silent until complications occur which can be life threatening. It usually present late with intrathoracic herniation of abdominal viscera and carry a high mortality rate. We experienced a very rare case who showed repeated colon incarcerations 7 years after in

Background: Scapholunate (SL) ligament injuries can occur concomitantly with distal radius fractures (DRFs), and the management of acute SL injury in the setting of DRFs remains controversial. The purpose of the study is to identify the radiographic incidence of SL widening in DRF treated with volar plate fixation and to determine the functional outcomes of DRF with concomitant radiographic SL-widening. Methods: One hundred and seventeen patients with DRFs, with and without radiographic SL-widening, and treated with volar locked plating, were prospectively enrolled. No SL ligament repairs or r

Background: The clinical picture of ulnar-sided wrist pain is oftentimes confusing because various pathologies may be coexistent. In this study, we aimed: (1) to compare the prevalence of potential causes of ulnar-sided wrist pain on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients who underwent triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) repair and control subjects: and (2) to evaluate whether inferior clinical results were associated with specific patient characteristics or other potential causes of ulnar-sided wrist pain. Methods: We included 67 patients who underwent a TFCC repair and 67 control

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the risks of maternal and neonatal complications in pregnancies with macrosomia.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted at a large maternity unit in the UK between January 2009 and December 2016. The incidence of maternal and neonatal complications in pregnancies with macrosomia, defined as birth weight (BW) > 4000 g, and in those with severe macrosomia, defined as BW > 4500 g, was compared with that in pregnancies with normal BW (2500-4000 g). Regression analysis was performed to determine odds ratios (ORs) for complications in macrosomic pregnancies

PURPOSE: Non-unions after humeral shaft fractures are seen frequently in clinical practice at about 2-10% after conservative management and 30% after surgical treatment. Non-union, displacement of structures and fixation failure can be hazardous complications. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the outcomes of an on-lay bone graft strut construction with bone chips as grafting augmentation in the management of aseptic non-unions of the humeral shaft.
METHODS: From 124 eligible patients with a humeral shaft non-union, we included 48 patients. In all cases an anterolateral humeral approac

BACKGROUND: We report the long-term results of a cohort of patients after radial head replacement with a bipolar design and a smooth cementless stem at a mean follow-up of 10.4 years.
METHODS: Of 17 possible patients from a previous minimum 2-year follow-up study, 16 were available for review. Patients were assessed using clinical and radiographic examination and with standardized outcome measures. Range of motion, stability, and radiographic evaluation of implant loosening and joint degeneration were assessed. Comparisons were performed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test for unequal groups.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle crashes (MCCs) constitute a disproportionately high number of road accidents that result in mortality and injury, compared with other motor vehicle collisions. Distribution and characteristics of upper extremity injuries sustained by motorcyclists and their implications are not well established. We sought to determine the epidemiology of upper extremity injuries in motorcyclists and the independent effects of the injuries on mortality and need for rehabilitative services.
METHODS: All motorcyclist admissions at our Level I trauma center from 2006 through 2010 were retro

Forty-one patients with 42 joint infections were admitted to the hospital between June 1989 and June 1994. An overview on the behaviour of septic arthritis in both children and adults, at presentation and after various types of treatment was done. There were 32 knees, 7 hips, 2 elbows and 1 shoulder. Duration of symptoms, type of organism, type of joint drainage, presence of preexisting joint problems and presence of osteomyelitis are among the important factors with prognostic significance. Seventy three percent of patients with less than 7 days duration of symptoms had satisfactory results.
