Overuse injuries in Swedish elite athletics- a study protocol for a prospective multifactorial cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Overuse injuries (OI) are common in elite athletics. Previous studies have had athletes self-report injuries rather than having a medical professional provide a clear diagnosis. This might be a major reason for the inconsistencies in reported incident proportions of OI in elite athletics, in addition to the varying definitions of OI in current literature. Risk factors or combinations of risk factors (biomechanical, clinical, and training-related) have been shown to be important in the developmental process of OI. However, no studies have examined these relationships using a multifa

Wrist Injuries in Tennis Players: A Narrative Review.

The wrist/hand complex forms the crucial final link in the kinetic chain between the body and the racquet and therefore has a number of important roles in the production of all tennis strokes. However, the internal and external loads that are created at the wrist during these strokes have the potential to contribute to pain and injury. Therefore, the purposes of this narrative review are to (1) determine the extent of the problem of wrist pain/injury in tennis players, (2) identify bony and soft tissue structures of the wrist that are susceptible to damage as a result of tennis play and (3) ex

The Epidemiology of Injuries Across the Weight-Training Sports.

BACKGROUND: Weight-training sports, including weightlifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding, strongman, Highland Games, and CrossFit, are weight-training sports that have separate divisions for males and females of a variety of ages, competitive standards, and bodyweight classes. These sports may be considered dangerous because of the heavy loads commonly used in training and competition. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to systematically review the injury epidemiology of these weight-training sports, and, where possible, gain some insight into whether this may be affected by age, sex, competitive s

Glenoid Bone Loss in Traumatic Glenohumeral Instability in the Adolescent Population.

BACKGROUND: Glenoid bone loss can affect the outcome and treatment for posttraumatic recurrent anterior glenohumeral instability. Clinical presentation in the adolescent age group with shoulder instability and glenoid bone loss is largely unknown. On the basis of this information, we believe there will be a high incidence of glenoid bone loss in adolescent patients with recurrent glenohumeral instability. We hypothesize that high-impact injuries, sports injuries, and reductions requiring sedation will be factors associated with glenoid bone loss. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cross-se

Chronic posterior sternoclavicular joint fracture dislocations in children and young adults: results of surgical management.

BACKGROUND: Posterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) fracture dislocations in children and young adults can be missed on initial examination or could fail closed treatment. We hypothesize that surgical interventions (open reduction and ligamentous reconstruction or medial clavicle resection depending on the clinical scenario) are safe treatment options in patients with symptomatic chronic posteriorly displaced SCJ injuries. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of all patients younger than 25 years of age who underwent surgical treatment for chronic posteriorly displaced SCJ injuries at

Effect of mirror therapy on hand function in patients with hand orthopaedic injuries: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of mirror therapy (MT) in restoring hand function in patients with active range of motion (AROM) impairments following orthopaedic injuries. METHOD: In a randomized controlled trial (RCT), 30 patients with active ROM impairment (8 men and 22 women; mean age: 38 years) were measured. Intervention group received MT, 30 min a day, five days a week for three weeks, as well, half an hour conventional rehabilitation after each MT session. Patients in the control group received the same treatment programme, but instead of mirror, they observed directly the affecte

Hypofractionation in radiotherapy. An investigation of injured Swedish women, treated for cancer of the breast.

BACKGROUND: The Swedish Insurance Company for Patient Injuries asked the two authors of this report to identify the Swedish women with cancer of the breast who had been injured by radiotherapy with a hypofractionated schedule. The purpose was to provide a basis on which the Company could decide if indemnification could be given. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We define hypo-fractionation as any fraction dose exceeding 2.0 gray (Gy) per day. We set the lower limit for the "late effect" at 53.0 Gy with 2 Gy/fraction. All departments of radiotherapy in Sweden were asked to identify women who had develope

Conservative treatment for brachial plexus injury after a displaced clavicle fracture: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: A brachial plexus injury is a rare complication of clavicle fractures. Previous case reports only examined the surgical outcomes of brachial plexus injuries that occurred after a clavicle fracture and did not report on the outcomes of conservative treatment. In this report, we present the prognosis of a patient with an acute displaced clavicle fracture accompanied by a brachial plexus injury that was conservatively treated. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old man with a middle-third clavicle fracture due to a direct trauma after falling down the stairs. A brachial plexus injury exper

Bruising caused by traditional Chinese massage therapy (ba sha) complicating the assessment of a case of fatal child abuse.

Precise evaluation of bruises and patterned skin lesions in infants and children is an essential requirement in cases of potential abuse. Such injuries may be markers of more significant internal injuries and/or may be supportive of an assault rather than an accident. On occasion, however, unusual patterned skin lesions may be identified that have been inflicted as part of traditional therapeutic techniques. A five-year-old boy from a rural Chinese community is reported who died from ligature strangulation. In addition to bruises from abusive trauma he had a series of unusual patterned, often-

Review of musculoskeletal injuries and prevention in the endoscopy practitioner.

Practitioners of endoscopy often experience musculoskeletal pain and injury (most often in the back, neck, shoulders, hands, wrists, and thumbs) that are associated with the minute and repetitive strain that is placed on these areas during endoscopic procedures. This review of the current documentation of endoscopy-related pain and injuries among practitioners finds that such problems are widespread and specific in kind as well as strongly correlated with high procedure volume and procedure duration. Research on the nature and impact of cumulative trauma and overuse syndromes in other professi

Joint-dependent response to impact and implications for post-traumatic osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of osteoarthritis (OA) varies between joints. Cartilage in eight different joints was evaluated to elucidate the disparate susceptibilities between joints to post-traumatic OA (PTOA) and provide evidence for joint-specific clinical treatments. The hypothesis was that cartilage in different joints would have varying cell death and anabolic gene expression profiles after injury. METHODS: Adult equine cartilage explants were harvested from shoulder (SH), elbow (EL), carpal (CA), metacarpophalangeal (MC), patellofemoral (FP), tarsal (TA), metatarsophalangeal (MT), and pr

All-arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

All-arthroscopic rotator cuff repair has evolved into a viable surgical option, with outcome results equal to that of mini-open and open rotator cuff repair, with less perioperative morbidity and is driven by patient demand. The technique has required refinement of arthroscopic surgical techniques, and further advances from industry to provide alternative tools and techniques to make the procedure technically easier. This manuscript discusses all aspects of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, and covers the evolution of the technique and provides a step-by-step technique to be used to accomplish

Deltoid detachment consequent to open surgical repair of massive rotator cuff tears.

Deltoid detachment is one of the complications in open rotator cuff repair. Although it is often described, the actual prevalence, time at which it occurs and the predisposing causes are still unknown. We prospectively studied 112 patients with massive rotator cuff tears with a mean age of 67. The surgical approach was performed with a lateral para-acromial incision. Clinical assessment was performed with Constant's method. Of the 112 patients, 9 (8%) had deltoid detachment. It occurred about 3 months after surgery. Of the nine patients, two underwent revision surgery for the deltoid trans-bon
