Development and psychometric evaluation of the Motivation to Use CPAP Scale (MUC-S) using factorial structure and Rasch analysis among patients with obstructive sleep apnea before CPAP treatment is initiated.

BACKGROUND: Continuous positive airway treatment (CPAP) is first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but adherence tends to be low. A clinical tool focusing on motivation to use CPAP is missing. The purpose was to develop a brief questionnaire to assess motivation to use CPAP that is psychometrically robust and suitable for use in clinical practice. METHODS: A convenience sample including 193 treatment naive patients with OSA (67% men; mean age = 59.7 years, SD 11.5) from two CPAP clinics was used. Clinical assessments and full night polygraphy were performed. Questionnaires adm

Excess daytime sleepiness, daily functioning and health-related quality of life during the first year after metabolic and bariatric surgery in patients with a known and unknown obstructive sleep apnea status.

PURPOSE: Despite a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS), there is no consensus on the best perioperative OSA strategy. Supplemental oxygen therapy without pre-operative OSA-testing (pulse oximetry) is safe and more cost-effective compared to preoperative OSA-testing using poly(somno)graphy (sleep test). This study aimed to compare these strategies on excess daytime sleepiness (EDS), its impact on daily functioning and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). METHODS: Multicenter prospective cohort study including 1388 pat

Guidelines for the assessment and management of residual sleepiness in obstructive apnea-hypopnea syndrome: Endorsed by the French Sleep Research and Medicine Society (SFRMS) and the French Speaking Society of Respiratory Diseases (SPLF).

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is frequent among patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and can persist despite the optimal correction of respiratory events (apnea, hypopnea and respiratory efforts), using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or mandibular advancement device. Symptoms like apathy and fatigue may be mistaken for EDS. In addition, EDS has multi-factorial origin, which makes its evaluation complex. The marketing authorization [Autorisation de Mise sur le Marché (AMM)] for two wake-promoting agents (solriamfetol and pitolisant) raises several pra

An orthodontic-orthognathic patient with obstructive sleep apnea treated with Le Fort I osteotomy advancement and alar cinch suture combined with a muco-musculo-periosteal V-Y closure to minimize nose deformity.

In some severe skeletal Class III patients, mandibular setback surgery using sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) is performed to correct mandibular protrusion. However, in patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), the risk of OSAS worsening as a result of the SSRO is very high. Maxillary advancement could reduce the degree of mandibular retropositioning and expand the skeletal framework in the pharyngeal region, leading to enlargement of the airway. However, nasal deformity is an undesirable outcome of the procedure. This case report describes a 23-year-old man with a
