OBJECTIVE: To determine if an interpersonal attribution bias associated with self-perception, the externalizing bias, was related to neural … a lower externalizing bias, demonstrating a tendency to self-attribute more negative than positive social interactions, unlike the other groups. The externalizing bias was correlated with activation of the left inferior frontal gyrus and posterior insula, when comparing thinking about others evaluating oneself with direct self-evaluation. Anxiety Disorder-Specific Predictors of Treatment Outcome in the Coordinated Anxiety Learning and Management (CALM) Trial.

Identifying baseline characteristics associated with treatment outcome in generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD) or post-traumatic stress disorder. We performed two secondary analyses of the Coordinated Anxiety Learning and Management trial. Baseline characteristics and their interactions with treatment assignment were analyzed via stepwise logistic regression models and receiver-operating criterion analyses by disorder predicting remission and response for each disorder. Predictors for poor outcome across diagnoses were comorbid depression and low socioeco

Families dealing with the uncertainty of genetic disorders: the case of Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Some scholars contend that genetic medicine is transforming the experience of illness and the social category of the family - bringing future risks into the present, and potentially strengthening familial biological bonds in light of these shared genetic risks. However, research has shown that genetic information is interpreted and acted upon through a rich repertoire of adaptable social, cultural and familial factors which pre-exist and interact with biomedical knowledge. This paper reports research into families living with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a highly uncertain condition the man

The convergence of gambling and digital media: implications for gambling in young people.

Adolescents' use of the Internet and other digital media for the purpose of gambling represents a serious concern in modern society. This paper overviews some of the available monetary and non-monetary forms of gambling within new digital and online media and monetary forms of games with gambling-like experiences. With reference to current psychological knowledge on the risk factors that promote adolescent gambling, it is suggested that new gambling technologies may: (a) make gambling more accessible and attractive to young people, (b) may promote factually incorrect information about gambling

Reducing HIV risk among people with serious mental illness.

The rate of HIV infection among U.S. citizens who live with serious mental illness (SMI) is significantly higher than among the general population. Research on the determinants of risk behavior is limited. The purpose of this article is to explore the effects of HIV-related health disparities on people with SMI by analyzing the multiple determinants, or domains of risk, and describing issues related to tailoring HIV primary prevention risk reduction strategies to people with SMI. According to the model proposed by Meade and Sikkema, domains of risk include psychiatric illness, substance use, c

Animal defense strategies and anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are classified according to symptoms, time course and therapeutic response. Concurrently, the experimental analysis of defensive behavior has identified three strategies of defense that are shared by different animal species, triggered by situations of potential, distal and proximal predatory threat, respectively. The first one consists of cautious exploration of the environment for risk assessment. The associated emotion is supposed to be anxiety and its pathology, Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The second is manifested by oriented escape or by behavioral inhibition, being re

Environmental factors related to the outcome of panic disorder. A seven-year follow-up study.

The purpose of this study was to examine factors related to the outcome of naturalistically treated panic disorder. In order to achieve this we followed up 69 patients 7 years after they had presented at a psychiatric clinic. At follow-up, the patients were generally doing well despite persisting symptoms. Patients who were more severely ill at the time of initial assessment had a worse outcome. These patients had more severe panic and agoraphobic symptoms, had illnesses of longer duration, and more often had histories of major depression. Among the developmental variables examined, separation

Explaining excessive rates of cesareans and other childbirth interventions: contributions from contemporary theories of gender and psychosocial development.

The current rate of cesarean sections in the U.S. is too high. Numerous mothers and babies are being placed at unnecessary risk of medical, behavioral and psychological complications. The problem has proven resistant to solution on a large scale, despite serious efforts on the part of a variety of individuals and groups. This paper considers reports on the interactions between obstetricians and mothers in labor in light of findings and theory in the areas of gender and psychosocial development. Examination of processes and standards of care in light of these findings and theory leads to the co

Ethanol-associated metabolic disorders.

The ingestion of alcohol, both intermittently and habitually, results in significant patient morbidity and mortality and stresses an already compromised socioeconomic system. Ethanol can interact with normal metabolic pathways to produce a variety of life-threatening abnormalities, particularly in those with underlying poor nutritional status, as is found in many alcohol users. Once identified, the metabolic derangements associated with alcohol use generally respond well to therapeutic interventions. The recurrence rate, however, is extremely high. Any attempt at long-term solutions must invol

Application of the LDA model to identify topics in telemedicine conversations on the X social network.

The evolution experienced by global society, in the post-COVID 19 era, is marked by the quite obligatory use of digital media in many sectors, as is the case for the health sector. Quite frequently, both patients and health professionals use social media to express their telemedicine concerns or interests. The present research focuses on these social media comments as they represent a very interesting data source for researchers. In the present analysis, we focus on unstructured tweet texts written by Internet users and apply both machine learning and the Latent Dirichlet Allocation algorithm

Providing Adaptation Solutions to the Problems Faced by Adoptive Families.

BACKGROUND: Adoption is frequently viewed as a way to complete the family because of the infertility that some families experience and the desire for kids and teenagers, especially orphans, to have a loving family. AIMS: This work intends to identify and propose adaptation solutions to address the psychological problems faced by adoptive families. By doing so, it is hoped that the mental health and overall well-being of individuals and society as a whole will be enhanced. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first stage of this study, the grounded theory approach based on Strauss and Corbin's metho

Paying for Medical and Social Complexity in Massachusetts Medicaid.

IMPORTANCE: The first MassHealth Social Determinants of Health payment model boosted payments for groups with unstable housing and those living in socioeconomically stressed neighborhoods. Improvements were designed to address previously mispriced subgroups and promote equitable payments to MassHealth accountable care organizations (ACOs). OBJECTIVE: To develop a model that ensures payments largely follow observed costs for members with complex health and/or social risks. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross sectional study used administrative data for members of the Massachusetts M

Defining Communicative Participation for Children and Young People: Views of Young People, Parents, and Speech and Language Therapists.

BACKGROUND: Communicating effectively in everyday life is a key outcome for children with speech, language and communication difficulties. However, we lack a clear way to describe children's everyday communication functioning-their communicative participation. Communicative participation is defined for adults, as 'taking part in life situations where knowledge, information, ideas, or feelings are exchanged', and included how communicative participation is achieved, with whom and for what purposes. AIM: This study aimed to consider communicative participation for children and young people, by

Neighbourhood belonging, social cohesion, and mental wellbeing of children and parents in an ethnically diverse community sample in England.

BACKGROUND: Neighbourhood cohesion is considered an important and modifiable determinant of mental health that interacts with factors such as deprivation and ethnicity in complex ways. UK studies adequately representing ethnic minority groups are however scarce. We examined associations between neighbourhood belonging, social cohesion, and mental wellbeing of children and parents in an ethnically diverse community sample in England. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional baseline data from the TOGETHER study, a randomised controlled trial testing the effectiveness of the ‘Strengthening Families,

Changes in Motivation, Socialization, Wellness and Mental Health in Youth Long-Distance Runners During COVID-19 Social Distancing Restrictions.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the sporting and exercise activities of millions of youth. Running is an activity that could be maintained while social distancing restrictions were implemented during the pandemic. However, a recent study has indicated that youth runners reported lower running distance, frequency, and intensity during COVID-19. The reason for this reduction and the impact on overall well-being is unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if the social distancing restrictions during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic influenced running motives, socialization

Impaired folate metabolism reshapes auditory response profiles and impairs loudness perception in MTHFR-deficient mice.

Folate metabolism, regulated by methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), is crucial for proper neurodevelopment, and disruptions-whether due to genetic polymorphisms or maternal nutritional deficits-have been linked to cognitive and behavioral impairments. Notably, MTHFR-deficient mouse models display altered social interaction and auditory communication, hinting at disruptions in auditory-related circuits and prompting the question of whether impaired folate metabolism might also affect sound processing and perception. Here, using two-photon calcium imaging, we show that MTHFR deficiency …
