"She Was Real About It and Made Me Feel Life Is Important": Patient Perspectives on Peers' Role in Peer-Assisted Telemedicine Hepatitis C Treatment for People Who Use Drugs in Rural Communities.

OBJECTIVES: Telemedicine is a promising approach to reach people with limited access to treatment for hepatitis C. People who use drugs (PWUD) and are disengaged from services, however, experience barriers to telemedicine access. The Oregon HOPE TeleHCV study employed peer support specialists to provide outreach to engage PWUD, support pretreatment screening, facilitate telemedicine Hepatitis C virus visits, and assist HCV medication initiation and adherence. In our randomized controlled trial (N =203), the model demonstrated substantially higher HCV treatment initiation and cure compared with

Speaking in Metaphors: Exploring Black Women's Communicated Sense-Making of Postpartum Depression.

Guided by the communicated sense-making model, we describe the results of an analysis of interviews with 15 Black women about their experiences with postpartum depression (PPD). The findings indicate that the women made sense of their experience using three categories of metaphors: (1) mobility, (2) cultural expectations, and (3) social support. These categories of metaphors provide evidence that the discourse of motherhood as distressing is expressed in the narratives of Black women with PPD, even as they seek to fulfill the demands of the discourse of motherhood as intensive. The metaphors a…

A universal home-visit programme to tailor support to first-time parents: a qualitative case study on parents' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The first year of a child's life is essential for promoting a healthy life, and the transition to becoming a parent can be a challenge; parents need to develop confidence in their own capacity to care for their child. The national Child Health Services programme in Sweden offers parental support, both on a universal level and in accordance with the individual family's needs. This study explores parents' experiences of an extended home-visit programme offered through a Family Centre to all first-time parents in a municipality. METHODS: This case study is based on a qualitative refl

Building community through engagement in a Hub-and-Spoke, Peer-led Community Aphasia Group program: the perspectives of participants with aphasia and their close others.

PURPOSE: Long-term social support is a key protective factor for living well with chronic disabilities. Community Aphasia Groups (CAGs) provide opportunities for connection and recovery. To address service availability challenges, we developed the Hub-and-Spoke, Peer-led CAG program in which a "Hub" of clinical staff supports "Spokes"-community members with and without aphasia-to facilitate high-quality CAGs. A pilot, mixed-methods study confirmed the feasibility and acceptability of this model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This nested qualitative study explored program acceptability from the persp…

Network of formal and informal care provided by family members for cancer patients receiving palliative care at home.

In the face of advanced oncological disease in palliative care at home, caregivers are mostly family members who are part of the informal system. The lack of guidance and social support exposes them to stress and overload that can affect their health, well-being, quality of life, and contribute to failures in care. The aim is to understand the care networks around the main caregiver in the context of home palliative care and describe the implications of the availability of these networks on the health care of this caregiver. Descriptive and qualitative study, developed at a national reference …

Impact of Spirituality in Christians With Serious Illness - A Phenomenological Study.

Seeking support within the faith community is frequently noted in Christians with serious illness. To assure needs are identified and to better understand the implications of spirituality in people with serious illness, a phenomenological study following the Giorgi methodology was conducted with 20 Christian individuals living with serious illness while residing in Greenwood, South Carolina, a community in the heart of the Bible Belt of America. Research interviews captured four major structures with accompanying constituent parts. The structures and constituent parts include sovereignty of Go

Wishes, conflicts, and support needs of informal caregivers of patients in the palliative phase: A qualitative study.

This study explored wishes, conflicts, beneficial, and wished support of informal caregivers (ICGs) providing care to a palliative ill close other. We interviewed five current and 15 bereaved ICGs (25-75 years), and used thematic analyses. ICGs wished to continue life as normal as possible, spend time together and with their family, comfort their close other, and continue own activities. Caregivers experienced conflicts in balancing caregiving and own activities, quality time with each other and social contacts, the level of professional or informal support preferred, and in their shifting rol

Beyond grief: Quantifying bereavement needs of rural family caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers (FCGs) may experience numerous psychosocial and practical challenges with interpersonal relationships, mental health, and finances both before and after their care recipient (CR) dies. The specific challenges affecting rural FCGs who often have limited access to palliative care services, transitional care, and other community resources are not well understood. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the challenges rural FCGs experienced immediately before the death of a CR and continuing into the bereavement period. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from a r

Trajectories of loneliness in later life - Evidence from a 10-year English panel study.

The prevalence of loneliness is higher among older people; however, few studies have examined its longitudinal patterns and associated risk factors, particularly social network resources. Using data from six waves of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2008/09 to 2018/19, N = 4740) and group-based trajectory modelling (GBTM), we identified five groups of loneliness trajectories: three with stable levels (37% "stable low"; 26% "stable medium"; 9% "stable high") and two with time-varying scores of loneliness (8% "increasing"; 20% "decreasing"). Multinomial regression models and GBTM were u

Smartphone intervention for pregnancy smoking cessation with peer support: the study protocol of the SmokeFree Together 2.0 (SFT 2.0) randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking in pregnancy negatively impacts the mother's and offspring's health. Mobile health, especially mobile phone-based approaches, shows promise in supporting pregnant women to quit smoking. Our previous research indicated that support from laypersons, such as family, friends and coworkers, can increase smoking cessation. Building on these findings, we developed an innovative smartphone application (app) that combines the power of social support with artificial intelligence. The app leverages the unique functionality of smartphones and reinforcement learning (RL) to provide a …

Co-designing a peer support programme for carers of people treated under the Mental Health Act: views from stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Relatives/friends (carers) of people who are involuntarily admitted to a psychiatric hospital report high levels of stress, feelings of isolation and exclusion from their patient's care. One-to-one peer support is widely implemented for patients, facilitating mental health recovery. Preliminary evidence reports that peer support may benefit carers too, but a one-to-one peer support programme to help carers when their relatives/friends are in hospital has not been developed. OBJECTIVE: To explore carers', patients', and professionals' views on what an accessible, feasible and helpf

Support preferences among women with and without postpartum depression and anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Some women struggle with mental health problems such as postpartum depression (PPD) or postpartum anxiety disorder (PAD) after giving birth. This can have a negative impact on the new mother, the infant, and the whole family. However, many women experiencing PPD and/or PAD go unrecognized and untreated. Since appropriate support is essential, efforts should be made to facilitate women's help-seeking behavior. The purpose of this study was to improve the mental health of postpartum women by understanding their specific support preferences. To this end, the preferences for counseling
