1. Bursts of sympathetic activity in muscle nerves are phase-locked to the cardiac cycle by the sinoaortic baroreflexes. Acoustic arousal from non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep reduces the normally invariant interval between the R-wave of the electrocardiogram (ECG) and the peak of the corresponding sympathetic burst; however, the effects of other forms of sleep disruption (i.e. spontaneous arousals and apnoea-induced arousals) on this temporal relationship are unknown. 2. We simultaneously recorded muscle sympathetic nerve activity in the peroneal nerve (intraneural electrodes) and the ECG

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sensitivity of the cardiopulmonary receptors in experimental diabetes induced by streptozotocin by the use of 2 different methods: (1) administration of increasing doses of serotonin to analyze peak changes of arterial pressure and heart rate for each given dose in conscious intact normal and diabetic rats; (2) expanding blood volume with the use of dextran (6%) to produce similar increases in left ventricular end-diastolic pressure to quantify the arterial pressure, heart rate, and renal sympathetic nerve activity in sinoaortic, denervated, ane

Considerable progress is currently being made in elucidating the molecular basis of the circadian (photoneuroendocrine) system by use of transgenic mice generated from the inbred strains C57BL and C3H. As in all other vertebrate species, the pineal organ is an important component of the photoneuroendocrine system in these mouse strains, but very little is known about its morphological and immunocytochemical features. We therefore investigated the pineal organ and the adjacent epithalamic region of adult, 10-, and 5-day-old C57BL and C3H mice for S-antigen, serotonin, and dopamine-ss-hydroxylas

A relationship between autonomic tone and the onset of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in some patients is recognised. Episodes of PAF may vary enormously in duration, however, from a few beats to many hours. Whether autonomic tone influences the duration of the episodes has been less well investigated. From a database of Holter recording taken from patients with symptomatic PAF, we identified all episodes of at least 30 seconds duration which were preceded by noise free sinus rhythm. This study examined the heart rate prior to AF onset, the change in heart rate over the final minute of sinus r

OBJECTIVE: We studied the relationship between vasoconstrictor changes in foot arteries (pedal, metatarsal, and digital arteries) and autonomic neuropathy in diabetic patients to estimate the degrees of sympathetic dysfunction.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Sixty-two patients and nineteen age-matched control subjects were studied. The resistance index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) were measured as vascular hemodynamic parameters using Doppler sonography, and the increases in these hemodynamic parameters (%RI and %PI) from rest to a deep breath were measured as indexes of the degrees of sympa

BACKGROUND: The haemodynamic response to progressive hypovolaemia, whether simulated by lower body negative pressure (LBNP) or head-up tilt, or induced by haemorrhage or haemodialysis, has a typical biphasic pattern: a first, sympathoexcitatory, phase of vasoconstriction, tachycardia, and stable blood pressure, and a second, sympathoinhibitory, phase of vasodilatation, bradycardia, and hypotension. The opioid system is involved in this response, since animal studies showed that opioid antagonism by naloxone can attenuate hypovolaemic hypotension. In humans, this finding could not be confirmed.

The plasticity of catecholaminergic cells within the carotid body, brainstem and sympatho-adrenal system was analyzed in rats subjected to normobaric hypoxia (10% O2) lasting up to 3 weeks. Long-term hypoxia elicited structural, neurochemical and phenotypic changes in carotid body and sympathetic ganglia (SIF cells), and stimulated the norepinephrine turnover in A2 neurons located caudal to the obex, the area where the chemosensory nerve fibers end. Chemodenervation abolished central alterations. Adaptive mechanisms for increasing norepinephrine biosynthesis in hypoxia involved changes in acti

UNLABELLED: Iodine-123-MIBG imaging has been used to evaluate myocardial sympathetic function in various cardiac diseases. In patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), increased sympathetic activity has been widely recognized, as assessed by measuring the plasma concentration and urinary excretion of catecholamines and by measuring muscle sympathetic nerve activity. However, these measurements are not specific indices of cardiac sympathetic function. Therefore, this study was undertaken to assess cardiac sympathetic function in patients with OSAS using MIBG cardiac scintigraphy.

To assess the mechanisms related to tetanus-induced acute renal failure (ARF), 30 patients with tetanus had their renal function prospectively studied and factors possibly related to renal changes were evaluated during four weeks of hospitalization. Fifty percent of these patients had a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) < or = 50 ml/min in the first or second week of hospitalization (Group I) and 50% had a GFR > 50 ml/min throughout the entire hospitalization period (Group II). Age, gender, tetanus incubation time and tetanus onset time, hospitalization time, use of nephrotoxic drugs, need for

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been increasingly used in the treatment of ischemia caused by obliterative diseases in the extremities and in the cardiac circulation. The most promising effects have been obtained when physicians suspect that a major vasospastic component underlies the ischemic symptoms (e.g., as in Raynaud's disease). Despite the clinical success of this treatment method, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the pain relief it produces and its anti-ischemic effects. Most earlier experimental studies have used normal animals or animals with cerebral vasospasm induc

Polymorphic ventricular tachycardia in association with prolongation of the QT interval on the surface electrocardiogram (ECG) has long been recognized as an important cause of life threatening arrhythmias that can occur with congenital or acquired abnormalities of cardiac repolarization. One hypothesis of the origin of these arrhythmias states that overactivity of the left-sided sympathetic or under activity of the right-sided sympathetic neural input to the heart leads to prolonged repolarization and ventricular arrhythmias. This hypothesis has led to the application of left cervicothoracic

Previous studies suggested that endogenous opiates may attenuate the cardiovascular and sympathetic adjustments to static exercise. We tested whether this effect originates from exercising skeletal muscle. Eight men performed 2 min of static handgrip (30% maximum) followed by 2 min of posthandgrip muscle ischemia after three interventions: 1) control, 2) intra-arterial injection of naloxone HCl (60 micrograms) or vehicle (saline) in the exercising arm, and 3) systemic infusion of naloxone (4 mg) or vehicle. Naloxone and vehicle trials were performed double blind on separate days. Preexercise b

Although a recognized migrainous phenomenon in adults, transient oculosympathetic paresis in childhood has been rarely observed. Six pediatric patients are reported with transient oculosympathetic paresis occurring within the context of characteristic vascular headaches. The clinical profiles of the patients suggest transient dysfunction of third-order ocular sympathetic pathways and represent most likely a benign, self-limited variant of pediatric migrainous neuralgia.

Severe side effects such as hepatotoxicity and potentiation of the sympathomimetic action of tyramine ("the cheese effect") caused the withdrawal of nonselective irreversible monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors from use in psychiatric therapy. The development of selective irreversible inhibitors for MAO type A did not eliminate cardiovascular side effects such as "the cheese effect" or, conversely, the hypotensive effect of these drugs. To overcome at least "the cheese effect," selective reversible MAO-A inhibitor antidepressants such as moclobemide and brofaromine have been developed. Being re

1. The extent to which vasodilator responses to electrical stimulation of the sympathetic innervation, in the submandibular gland of the cat, depend upon release of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) within the gland has been investigated in anaesthetized cats given N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) which specifically blocks the synthesis of EDRF from arginine. 2. Close intra-arterial infusions of L-NAME (> or = 100 mg kg-1) produced a steady and significant rise in mean aortic pressure together with a steady increase in basal submandibular vascular resistance over the next 20-3

OBJECTIVE: The importance of sympathetic innervation for the development of structural changes in the cerebral arteries of hypertensive animals was studied.
DESIGN: Sympathetic denervation was induced with combined treatment from birth of antibody against nerve growth factor and guanethidine. Previous studies from our laboratory showed that this procedure not only caused a permanent denervation of the mesenteric arteries, but also prevented the development of hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).
METHODS: Morphometric measurement of the structural changes was carried out in

Heart rate (HR) and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) responses to ramp changes in blood pressure (BP) by (de)pressor agents and to acute volume expansion were recorded in conscious young, mature, and old Wistar rats maintained for 4 wk on diets containing low, control, or high dietary Na. Both HR and RSNA responses to BP increases or decreases were attenuated on low-Na diet compared with control Na diet. On high-Na diet, HR responses to BP changes and RSNA responses to BP increases were also attenuated, but in contrast the excitatory response of RSNA to BP decreases was augmented. The i

Microinjections of cyanide (300 pmol) into the cardiovascular portion of the rostral ventrolateral reticular nucleus (RVL) of anesthetized rats (paralyzed and ventilated) produced a pressor response (26.5 +/- 1.6 mmHg, n = 7) and a transient depression of phrenic nerve discharge (90 +/- 8%, n = 5). Microiontophoretic applications of cyanide (less than or equal to 100 nA, 5-40 s) excited the RVL-spinal sympathoexcitatory neurons (31 out of 31). The response was dose dependent, reversible, independent of the baroreflex input to these neurons, and different from the responses of units with sponta

Sauvagine (SV) powerfully inhibits gastric acid secretion by both the central and peripheral mechanisms. We examined whether adrenergic mechanisms or prostaglandin pathways might mediate the inhibitory action of SV on acid production in pylorus-ligated rats. Adrenalectomy altered the extent of the SV suppressive effect, suggesting that adrenal-derived substances participate in the action of the peptide. Blockade of adrenergic receptors by propranolol did not modify the antisecretory effect of SV, while the alpha-adrenergic antagonist, phentolamine, and the dopaminergic antagonist, haloperidol,
