Presence of microplastic particles increased abundance of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes in microbial communities from the Oder river water and sediment.

High abundance of microplastic particles (MPs) in the water environment could be a factor in spreading of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes (AMR), especially antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The aim of our study was to assess changes in the microbial community developing on microplastic surfaces incubated in water from the Oder River-one of Central Europe's major rivers, flowing through three countries (Czechia, Germany, and Poland)-whose diverse, 20,000-km2 catchment area (encompassing industrial, agricultural, and urban regions) ensures a relatively high abundance of microbial

Organically modified sodium montmorillonite for enhanced adsorption of xylenol orange from aqueous solutions: kinetic, thermodynamic, and mechanistic study.

Xylenol orange (XO) is a persistent anionic azo dye that resists conventional treatment. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and binding poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) were sequentially intercalated onto Na-montmorillonite (NaMt) to prepare a CTAB/PVP-modified Na-montmorillonite (CP-NaMt), and its adsorption toward XO was evaluated. The nanostructured adsorbent was characterized by chemical analysis, morphological, phase analysis, and point-of-zero-charge measurements. The characterization indicated successful organic intercalation accompanied by slight basal-spacing expansion, partial layer

Efficient degradation of ciprofloxacin in water using nZVI/g-C3N4 enhanced dielectric barrier discharge plasma process.

Residual antibiotics in aquatic environments pose health and ecological risks due to their persistence and resistance to biodegradation. Thus, it is crucial to develop efficient technologies for the degradation of such antibiotics. This study presents a novel approach using a nano zero-valent iron/graphitic carbon nitride (nZVI/g-C3N4)-enhanced dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma process for the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). The combination of nZVI and g-C3N4 with DBD plasma significantly enhances CIP degradation efficiency, achieving an apparent first-order kinetic constant of 0.2

Chloride-enhanced degradation of micropollutants in natural water by the iron/biochar/peroxymonosulfate system: Role of iron(IV) and radicals.

The increased occurrence and concentration of micropollutants in water supplies raise public health concerns. Advanced oxidation of micropollutants in real water sources remains challenging due to scavenging reactions involving background anions and natural organic matter. For the first time, this paper demonstrates that chloride (Cl-) accelerates the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by iron-biochar (Fe/BC) composites. Under the tested conditions, this novel system completely degraded bisphenol A (BPA), a representative micropollutant, within 1.0 min. Micropollutant degradation was invest

Upgrading constructed wetlands using upstream (advanced) oxidation technology to improve the removal of micropollutants and reduce the ecotoxicological risks.

This study shows research pathways from the Interreg-EmiSûre project, where several admixtures were studied as substrates for constructed wetlands (CWs), to the Interreg-CoMinGreat project, which proposed a pre-oxidation step to improve the removal of micropollutants, extend CW lifetime, and reduce the surface area. In EmiSûre, CWs (15% of activated carbon and 85% of sand) were installed in Echternach wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) (Luxembourg) achieving 80% removal of most the target compounds. Then, the configuration of these CWs was combined with photo-Fenton in Bliesen WWTP (Germany) at

Application of Box-Behnken design to optimize the phosphorus removal from industrial wastewaters using magnetic nanoparticles.

Phosphorus is essential for all living organisms and limits aquatic plant growth. Pulp mill effluents, particularly from Eucalyptus bleached kraft pulp mills, contain phosphorus concentrations that vary with operational conditions. This variability poses challenges for effective treatment and phosphorus removal. However, uncontrolled release of phosphorus-rich wastewaters causes eutrophication. This study focuses on optimizing phosphorus removal from such effluents using cobalt ferrite nanoparticles, with an emphasis on process optimization to address this variability. Minimizing phosphorus co

Innovative hybrid anaerobic ammonium oxidation system enhances nitrogen and sulfur elimination in landfill leachate treatment.

Under anaerobic conditions, ammonia nitrogen (NH4+) reacts with nitrite (NO2-) and sulfate (SO42-), i.e., nitrite-ammonia oxidation (Nir Anammox) and sulfate-ammonia oxidation (Sulfammox). In this study, a combined system of internal circulation (IC) reactor and biological aerated filter (BAF) was used for landfill leachate treatment: the IC reactor performs anaerobic digestion to remove organic matter (COD) and facilitate sulfate reduction, while the BAF achieves partial nitritation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation under intermittent aeration. After 300 days of operation, the nitrogen removal

A method to remove heavy metals from wastewater by modifying the surface of a PVDF membrane using chitosan and PANi and assessing it using the Hermia model.

Despite the commercialization of several promising technologies for removing organic contaminants from wastewater, industries still face challenges in removing both the organic and heavy metals. In this research, PVDF is combined with biopolymer chitosan (CS) and polyaniline (PANi), a conducting polymer known for its nitrogen-containing functional groups, which bind to heavy metal ions. It was observed that the addition of CS and PANi has altered the roughness of PVDF due to hydrophilic nature of CS and PANi allowing the membrane to trap more water, thereby aiding it in the removal of heavy me
