Relapsing peritoneal dialysis‑associated peritonitis caused by Pseudomonas oryzihabitans with concurrent tunnel infection: a case report and literature review.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis is linked to an increased risk of catheter removal and PD discontinuation, with these risks occurring more frequently in relapsing peritonitis than in primary peritonitis. Relapses are often attributed to persistent infection originating from the PD catheter, including tunnel infection (TI). Although Pseudomonas oryzihabitans is a commensal bacterium and recognized opportunistic pathogen, only a limited number of cases of P. oryzihabitans peritonitis—and none involving relapsing peritonitis with concurrent TI—have been reported. A 73-year-old Jap

Lipid Metabolism in Insect Vectors of Diseases.

According to the World Health Organization vector-borne diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases, causing more than 700,000 deaths annually. Vectors are organisms that are able to transmit infectious pathogens between humans, or from animals to humans. Many of these vectors are hematophagous insects, which ingest the pathogen from an infected host during a blood meal, and later transmit it into a new host. Malaria, dengue, African trypanosomiasis, yellow fever, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, and many others are examples of diseases transmitted by insects. Both the diet and …

Evidence of a putative new species Haemagogus 'Trinidad sp. A' from the Caribbean sharing mitogenome lineages with species endemic to the Amazon.

Species of mosquitoes in the genus Haemagogus, native to the forests of the Caribbean, and South and Central America, are extraordinarily understudied despite their known role as sylvatic vectors of yellow fever and Mayaro viruses. Haemagogus janthinomys is the best studied species in the genus but represents only one of two subgenera. Genomic data for this genus is also limited to full mitochondrial genomes for six taxa, severely curtailing insight into the biogeography and evolutionary systematics of this genus. This work presents 9 new complete mitochondrial genome sequences of a putative n…

Independent Exposure to the Fungicide Difenoconazole or the Herbicide Tebuthiuron Disrupts Survival, Behavior, and Alters Midgut-Associated Protein Detection in Aedes aegypti Larvae.

Agrochemicals used in agriculture have been detected in aquatic ecosystems, affecting the biota and potentially causing bioaccumulation. This work investigated the lethal and sublethal effects of the fungicide difenoconazole and the herbicide tebuthiuron on larvae of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Mosquitoes are widespread and abundant throughout aquatic ecosystems, making them suitable models for toxicity studies, with A. aegypti being particularly easy to rear. We assessed the impact of exposure on larval survival, behavior, and physiology, including antioxidant enzyme activity an…

17-epi-Melianodiol, a new protolimonoid from Melia azedarach fruits, exhibits larvicidal activity and is associated with oxidative imbalance and midgut epithelial damage in Aedes aegypti larvae.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika virus, posing a major public health concern, particularly in underdeveloped regions where insecticide resistance and the circulation of highly virulent strains are increasing. In search of alternative and sustainable control strategies, this study evaluated the biolarvicidal potential of compounds from the fruits of Melia azedarach against third-instar Ae. aegypti larvae, focusing on larvicidal efficacy and associated physiological alterations. RESULTS: In this study, …

Evaluation of Larvicidal Potential of Nepeta cataria and Cymbopogon nardus Essential Oils Against Aedes aegypti.

Mosquito-borne diseases remain one of the greatest challenges to global public health, with Aedes aegypti (A. aegypti) serving as a primary vector of arboviruses such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika. Reliance on synthetic insecticides for larval control has contributed to ecological concerns, human health risks, and the emergence of resistance in mosquito populations. These issues highlight the urgent need for safer, sustainable, and environmentally compatible alternatives. The present study investigated the larvicidal efficacy of essential oils extracted from locally grown plan…

Transient receptor potential channels in Flaviviridae infection: A comprehensive review.

Diseases caused by Flaviviridae viruses exert profound global health and economic burdens due to their high incidence and associated mortality. Infection by the Flaviviridae family often leads to severe acute or chronic illnesses, including hemorrhagic systemic diseases caused by dengue virus (DENV) and yellow fever virus, neurological complications associated with West Nile virus and Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, as well as liver damage and hepatocellular carcinoma resulting from hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Accumulating evidence indicates that a hallmark of Flaviviridae infection is to …

The RNA promoter for pathogenic orthoflaviviruses replication is universal and serves as target for viral inhibition.

Orthoflaviviruses comprise a diverse genus of positive-strand RNA viruses that includes major human pathogens such as dengue, yellow fever, Zika, Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis, and West Nile viruses. Despite their global impact, the molecular constraints that preserve viral replication across distinct vectors and host environments remain incompletely understood. Viral RNA replication depends on Stem-Loop A (SLA), a structured RNA element located at the 5' end of the genome that recruits the viral polymerase NS5. Here, we examine the structural diversity of this RNA promoter ac…

Environmental influences on Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) population densities across 2 urban communities on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The mosquito species Aedes aegypti (Linneaus) is the vector of multiple arboviruses, including dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. Risk of infections associated with these arboviruses continues to expand as the geographical range of Ae. aegypti extends into temperate regions. Although Ae. aegypti is abundant along the U.S.-Mexico border, the ecology of this mosquito species in this temperate/subtropical desert is not well understood. Our study objective was to estimate the seasonal population density in 2 urban communities: Sparks, El Paso, Texas and Anapra, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, …

Rapid molecular method for early detection of the invasive mosquito Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) at Points of Entry.

In recent years, globalization and climate change have led to a rise in the number of imported cases of Aedes-diseases in Europe, resulting in increased frequency and magnitude of local transmissions due to the presence of competent vectors. Recently, Italy has experienced the establishment of three exotic Aedes mosquitoes relevant to human health, Aedes albopictus, Aedes koreicus and Aedes japonicus. Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of dengue and yellow fever, distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, has recently reappeared in Europe and the risk for its re-introduction in Italy is h…

Demographic History, Genetic Load, and the Efficacy of Selection in the Globally Invasive Mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti is the main vector species of yellow fever, dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. The species is originally from Africa but has experienced a spectacular expansion in its geographic range to a large swath of the world, and the demographic effects of which have remained largely understudied. In this report, we examine whole-genome sequences from six countries in Africa, North America, and South America to investigate the demographic history of the spread of A. aegypti into the Americas and its impact on genomic diversity and deleterious genetic load. In the Americas, we observe patterns …

Differential elimination of marked sex chromosomes enables production of nontransgenic male mosquitoes in a single strain.

Diverse genetic strategies are being pursued to control mosquito-borne infectious diseases. These strategies often rely on the release of nonbiting males to either reduce the target mosquito population or render them resistant to pathogens. Male-only releases are important as any contaminating females can bite and potentially transmit pathogens. Despite significant efforts, it remains a major bottleneck to reliably and efficiently separate males from females, especially when nontransgenic males are preferred. In the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, sex is determined by a pair of homomorphi…

The Dysregulation of Tuning Receptors and Transcription Factors in the Antennae of Orco and Ir8a Mutants in Aedes aegypti Suggests a Chemoreceptor Regulatory Mechanism Involving the MMB/dREAM Complex.

Olfaction has been extensively studied in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. This species uses its sense of smell to find blood hosts and other resources, contributing to its impact as a vector for human pathogens. Two major families of protein-coding genes, the odorant receptors (Ors) and the ionotropic receptors (Irs), provide the mosquito with sensitivities to distinct classes of volatile compounds in the antennae. Individual tuning receptors in both families require co-receptors for functionality: Orco for all Ors, and Ir8a for many Irs, especially ones that are involved in carboxyl…

Sublethal exposure of emamectin benzoate and thiamethoxam alters the biological parameters and genes expression in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Excessive use of agrochemicals results in contamination of water due to runoff or leaching. Insecticide induced-hormesis, a phenomenon characterized by low dose stimulation following exposure to insecticide, is crucial to insect pest resurgence. In this study, the effects of low or sublethal concentrations of emamectin benzoate and thiamethoxam on biological traits and genes expression were investigated for yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti following 48 h exposures. Bioassay was conducted to compute LC10 and LC20 values for both test insecticides. The low lethal (LC10) and sublethal (LC20) …

Greater occupancy of invasive hybrid marmosets compared to a threatened native species in the fragmented Atlantic Forest: implications for conservation.

Endemic to the Atlantic Forest, Callithrix aurita faces endangerment due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and yellow fever epidemics, exacerbated by the introduction of non-native marmoset species, which heightens the risk of competition, hybridization, and genetic erosion. In this study, we employed playback methods and occupancy models to investigate habitat use by C. aurita and hybrid marmoset groups (Callithrix spp.) across 15 forest fragments in Guidoval, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We examined the influence of forest connectivity and distance from Guidoval's urban center on the occupan…

Development and application of a PCR-RFLP assay revealing widespread distribution of the pyrethroid resistance-associated VGSC V1016G mutation in Aedes albopictus from Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province of China.

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is a primary vector of multiple arboviruses, including dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika virus. Its control relies heavily on pyrethroid insecticides. The V1016G mutation in the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) is a well-documented mechanism conferring pyrethroid resistance in Ae. albopictus, which directly challenges the efficacy of pyrethroid-based control. Understanding of the status of insecticide resistance will offer insights to inform evidence-based vector management. However, current phenotypic monitoring is laborious and time-consuming, highli…
