Amniocentesis dysmelia in rats.

Amniocentesis performed on Day 15½ of gestation caused dysmelia in 85 of 143 offspring of Sprague-Dawley and Wistar strain rats. Almost all defects were of reduction type, only 3 hind limb postaxial supernumerary digits being seen. Defect intensity graded from longitudinal splitting of the phalanges, through phalangeal suppression, to very severe growth retardation of the long limb bones and the limb girdle. The lesions in the 2 strains were indistinguishable from each other. Subcutaneous haemorrhages were frequently present and could take the form of blebs. Hind limbs were more frequently and

Abdominal distension after eating lettuce: The role of intestinal gas evaluated in vitro and by abdominal CT imaging.

BACKGROUND: Some patients complain that eating lettuce, gives them gas and abdominal distention. Our aim was to determine to what extent the patients' assertion is sustained by evidence. METHODS: An in vitro study measured the amount of gas produced during the process of fermentation by a preparation of human colonic microbiota (n = 3) of predigested lettuce, as compared to beans, a high gas-releasing substrate, to meat, a low gas-releasing substrate, and to a nutrient-free negative control. A clinical study in patients complaining of abdominal distention after eating lettuce (n = 12) measure

[Prophylactics and treatment of postoperative hernias of the lateral abdominal walls using polypropylene endoprosthesis].

An analysis of complex examination and treatment of 151 patients after planned and performed surgical interventions on organs of the retroperitoneal space was made. The patients were divided into 4 groups. The first group (of comparison) included 46 patients who were treated by lumbotomy for different diseases of organs of the urinary system. In 35 patients of the second group (prophylactics) the indications were determined and in 20 patients preventive endoprosthesis of the lateral abdominal wall using polypropylene endoprosthesis was fulfilled. Herniotomy with plasty of the lateral abdominal

Revealing the Immune and Inflammatory Mechanisms of Electroacupuncture in Male IBS Rats Through Multi-Omics Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) therapy shows promising efficacy in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study integrated nontargeted metabolomics with transcriptomics to investigate the immune-inflammatory mechanisms underlying the effects of EA therapy in male IBS rats. METHOD: IBS was induced in rats using water avoidance stress (WAS), and EA was applied at ST25 and BL25 acupoints. The IBS model was evaluated alongside assessments of depressive behavior. Visceral sensation was quantified using the abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) and the area under the EMG curve of abdominorectal musc

Accelerated motion-robust abdominal 3D T1ρ mapping using diamond radial sampling.

PURPOSE: To develop and validate a fast, motion-robust, free-breathing abdominal 3D T1ρ mapping method by combining variable-density diamond radial k-space sampling with fast-MAPSS (magnetization-prepared angle-modulated partitioned-k-space spoiled gradient-echo snapshots). METHODS: 3D MAPSS T1ρ imaging was performed at 3T using five spin-lock time (TSL) pairs in phantom scans and three TSL pairs in nine healthy volunteers. Phantom experiments compared Cartesian sampling (reference) with stack-of-stars and diamond radial sampling. Volunteer scans utilized stack-of-stars and diamond sampling.

Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ for low back pain: a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ for Chronic Low Back Pain. BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is a major cause of disability. Research shows that people with cLBP over activate the abdominal and superficial paraspinal muscles and this may indicate an underlying pattern of antagonistic flexor-extensor tone. This study was designed test a new intervention for cLBP, Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ (CMT). CMT integrates biomechanical training to improve postural tone with psychological techniques for pain management. METHODS: The CMT intervention included five components: Understanding

Multiple Primary Angiosarcomas of the Colon.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal angiosarcomas are rare and represent less than 1% of all gastrointestinal tract malignancies, with most occurring in the stomach and small intestine. Occurrence in the colorectal segments is considered extremely rare. Case Report. We describe the case of a 61-year-old male with multiple primary angiosarcomas of the colon who presented with fever and abdominal pain. The patient was initially hospitalized and treated as having an infectious disease. A multislice computed tomography (MSCT) scan revealed multiple soft tissue tumors in the region of the left iliopsoas

No-incision (NOTES) versus single-incision (single-port) surgery for access to sites of peritoneal carcinomatosis: a back-to-back animal study.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative radiological diagnosis and evaluation of limited peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is suboptimal. Triangle laparoscopy is considered a noncarcinologic option due to the risk of tumoral spreading through the lateral ports into the abdominal wall muscles. Open surgery is therefore often needed to characterize PC. A minimally invasive approach would be progress. METHODS: We aimed to compare access rates to elective sites of PC using natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) with those using single-port laparoscopic surgery (SPLS). Sixteen acute experiments wer

Anoxic persistence of lumbar respiratory bursts and block of lumbar locomotion in newborn rat brainstem spinal cords.

The tolerance of breathing in neonates to oxygen depletion is reflected by persistence of inspiratory-related motor output during sustained anoxia in newborn rat brainstem preparations. It is not known whether lumbar motor networks innervating expiratory abdominal muscles are, in contrast, inhibited by anoxia similar to locomotor networks in neonatal mouse lumbar cords. To test this, we recorded inspiratory-related cervical/hypoglossal plus pre/postinspiratory lumbar/facial nerve activities and, sometimes simultaneously, locomotor rhythms in newborn rat brainstem-spinal cords. Chemical anoxia …

Coordination and modulation of locomotion pattern generators in Drosophila larvae: effects of altered biogenic amine levels by the tyramine beta hydroxlyase mutation.

Forward locomotion of Drosophila melanogaster larvae is composed of rhythmic waves of contractions that are thought to be produced by segmentally organized central pattern generators. We present a systematic description of spike activity patterns during locomotive contraction waves in semi-intact wild-type and mutant larval preparations. We have shown previously that Tbetah(nM18) mutants, with altered levels of octopamine and tyramine, have a locomotion deficit. By recording en passant from the segmental nerves, we investigated the coordination of the neuronal activity driving contraction wave

Clinical efficacy of electroacupuncture on pelvic floor function in women with stress urinary incontinence: a randomized sham-controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a prevalent condition among adult women, significantly impairing quality of life. Patients with SUI often exhibit abnormal pelvic floor muscle function, which can be comprehensively assessed using surface electromyography (sEMG) and transperineal ultrasound (TPUS). Electroacupuncture (EA) is an effective treatment for SUI, and multiple studies have confirmed its clinical efficacy; however, objective evidence regarding its impact on pelvic floor muscle function remains limited. This study aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy of EA applied to lo
