A novel approach for the treatment of volatile organic compounds from gaseous streams was developed. In order to accomplish this, a semi-batch bubble reactor was used, aiming to assess the toluene (selected as model compound) degradation from gaseous streams via heterogeneous Fenton oxidation. We report the first case of rickettsialpox caused by Rickettsia akari in the Netherlands. The diagnosis was suspected based on clinical grounds and was confirmed by Western blot analysis with cross-adsorption. Because the arthropod vector (Liponyssoides sanguineus) is ubiquitous, we suspect that the disease is under-diagnosed in non-endemic areas.

The influence of reagents interactions with V2O5 catalyst on its activity in the reaction of SO2 oxidation has been investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method. A rare case of extensive dermal uptake of Tc-99m MDP associated with renal failure is reported. The mechanism of Tc-99m MDP uptake in such examples of metastatic calcification is not proved, but may relate to adsorption onto hydroxyapatite crystals. This phenomenon is useful in demonstrating distribution of nonvisceral metastatic calcification.

The biological properties (infectivity, hemagglutination, hemolysis, cell fusion, neuraminidase) of Sendai virus were dissociated on the basis of sensitivity to beta-propiolactone, by freeze-thawing, by heating at different temperatures, and by adsorption-elution with formalinized chicken erythrocytes. Possible mechanisms whereby beta-propiolactone selectively destroys viral infectivity are discussed.
