From Seedling Architecture to Grain: Linking Root and Shoot Traits with Yield Potential for Climate-Resilient Wheat Breeding.

Improving wheat for climate change requires understanding how seedling root systems affect adult plant performance. We evaluated 116 spring … gh root-to-shoot ratio (RSR = 1.55), and superior yield (GYP = 11.76 g), whereas excessive seedling biomass was associated with yield penalties. Deep seminal-root angle (DRA) established a steep spatial distribution. The multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index (MGIDI) identified 17 elite genotypes (e.g., G024, G020, G106, Sids14, and Gemiza11), offer …

Double-Volcano Catalytic Response in Furfural Reductive Amination Over Inverse Ni─Al Catalysts.

Reductive amination of aldehydes and ketones to primary amines is an important route for biomass valorization, yet achieving efficient synergy between substrate and hydrogen activation in cascade reactions remains challenging. Herein, we construct a compositionally tunable Ni─Al catalyst system whose architecture evolves from conventional Ni/Al2O3 to inverse Al2O3/Ni. This structural evolution gives rise to an unusual double-volcano catalytic behavior in furfural reductive amination. Two activity maxima are identified over 30Ni/Al2O3 and inverse Al2O3/90Ni, respectively, with the optimal Al2O3…

Insights into Remediation of Cd Contamination in Vegetable Soils by Red Mud-Modified Biochar.

Recently, heavymetal contamination in soil has been widely concerned. Herein, three types of biochar-based materials, including biochar (BC) … l enzyme (β-glucosidase, alkaline phosphatase, and urease) activities, soil organic carbon, and the biomass of onion plants. The immobilization mechanism of soil Cd following RM-BC treatment was explored, involving in surface adsorption, ion exchange, and complexation reactions. Importantly, the Cd concentration of onion stem is about 0.13 mg/kg following …

Advances in microbial sulfoquinovose catabolism.

Sulfoquinovose (SQ) serves as the polar head group of sulfolipids in photosynthetic organisms. Given the substantial biomass of these organisms, the estimated global annual production of SQ is around 10 billion tons, making it one of the most abundant sulfur-containing organic compounds in nature. The microbial degradation of SQ constitutes a critical component of the global sulfur cycle and is increasingly recognized for its relevance to human health, particularly through its metabolism by the gut bacteria. Microorganisms employ two principal classes of catabolic pathways to degrade SQ: (i) C…

Detergents without a drain: the evolutionary logic (and liability) of sphingolipids.

Sphingolipids are evolutionarily conserved lipids that, I contend, emerged as a solution to a fundamental biochemical problem: cells require fatty acids, yet these molecules are potent detergents. In higher metazoans, a metabolic asymmetry amplifies this physical threat: unlike most macronutrients, fatty acids cannot be readily converted into nonlipid forms of biomass. Thus, when their supply exceeds energetic demand, they remain chemically committed lipids with the capacity to destabilize membranes and disrupt cellular organization. The emergence of sphingolipid metabolism offered an elegant …

Zero-valent iron regulates hydrothermal carbonization pathways toward Fe-C interfacial hydrochar formation.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) offers a sustainable route for converting wet biomass-derived precursors into functional carbonaceous materials, yet mechanistic control over carbonization pathways, heteroatom incorporation, and metal-carbon interfacial evolution remains challenging. Here, we use glucose and glycine as representative carbohydrate and amino acid precursors, respectively, to elucidate how zero-valent iron (Fe0) regulates HTC chemistry under mild hydrothermal conditions. Rather than serving only as a performance-enhancing additive, Fe0 acts as a multifunctional regulator that dir…

DISCUSSION: These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of SW03 and CF03 under food-relevant storage conditions with high initial bacterial loads and support their potential use as biocontrol agents in food systems.

Zinc enhanced aggregation and surface attachment independently of AdcBC, whereas biofilm biomass showed partial dependence on AdcBC-mediated zinc uptake. The ΔadcBC mutant also exhibited altered expression of genes involved in oxidative stress, metal homeostasis, and regulatory pathways. CONCLUSION: Loss of adcBC is associated with altered phy …

(In)determinacy in Woody Plants: Limits and Opportunities for Timing Growth in a Changing Climate.

When and how much plants grow under environmental constraints are fundamental questions in biology and increasingly important for predicting biomass production and carbon sequestration under climate change. While temperature and water availability directly regulate plant growth, the timing and rate of growth are also shaped by internal developmental programming, though this is rarely considered in predictions of tree growth responses to future climates. Here, we revisit a concept central to this internal programming-(in)determinacy. Focusing on woody plants, we define it as the extent to which…

Competitive Adsorption Mechanisms of Cu(II) and Cd(II) on Mineral-Humic Acid-Pseudomonas putida Composites: Implications for Heavy Metal Retention in Agricultural Soils.

The fate of heavy metals in agricultural soils is governed by organo-mineral-microbial interactions, which predictive models often fail to capture. The competitive sorption mechanisms of Cd(II) and Cu(II) on montmorillonite/kaolinite composites (Mont/Kao) functionalized with humic acid (HA) and Pseudomonas putida (P. p), a model system representative of contaminated agricultural soils, were investigated. Batch experiments, XRD, FTIR, and thermodynamic analysis reveal that metal retention is a non-additive function of competing interfacial processes. Bacterial biomass dominated sorption, accoun…

Rhizobial inoculation promotes glycyrrhizic acid production through jasmonic acid signaling in Glycyrrhiza uralensis.

We previously found that inoculation with rhizobia tends to increase both biomass production and glycyrrhizic acid (GL) production in the medicinal plants Glycyrrhiza uralensis and G. glabra. In this study, we investigated the mechanism by which rhizobial inoculation promotes GL production. Transcriptome analysis of plants grown for 3, 6, 9, and 13 weeks after rhizobial inoculation revealed significant enrichment of GO terms related to root tissue differentiation and reorganization in inoculated plants. In addition, jasmonic acid (JA)-mediated signaling pathway, fatty acid biosynthetic process…

Sulfur-doped pine-needle biochar activates peroxymonosulfate for singlet-oxygen-dominated norfloxacin degradation: Structure-activity relationship and mechanistic insights.

Norfloxacin (NOR), a widely used fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is increasingly detected in aquatic environments. Herein, pine-needle biomass was valorized into B-, N-, and S-doped biochars for adsorption-oxidation coupled NOR removal via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Systematic comparison showed that sulfur-doped biochar (SBC) exhibited the best overall performance for NOR removal and PMS activation. Structure-activity analysis revealed that the enhanced performance of SBC was closely associated with defect-rich structures and thiophene-S species. Kinetic analysis demonstrated a clear syne…
