Association between changes in obesity status and neuropsychiatric health and brain structure in different glucose status.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major global health challenge, linked to cardiometabolic and neuropsychiatric disorders through mechanisms such as inflammation and insulin resistance. However, little is known about how adiposity and its longitudinal changes interact with glycemic status to shape neuropsychiatric health and brain structural vulnerability. Clarifying these relationships is of high importance, as both obesity and dysglycemia are modifiable risk factors that may jointly accelerate psychiatric disorder and brain aging. METHODS: Using UK Biobank data (n = 423,750, with 32,551 having brain

The triadic relationship between spinal posture, loading, and degeneration.

INTRODUCTION: Degenerative changes in the lumbar spine may affect many structures, among them the intervertebral discs and the facet joints. The individual load distribution within the spine linked to posture and mass distribution is a probable cause of disease. This study had a dual aim: first, to systematically summarize previously reported associations between sagittal balance parameters and the occurrence of lumbar spine degeneration. Second, to complement these insights with additional biomechanical findings meant to elucidate the link between spine load and alignment as well as selected

Changes in body mass index and behavioral health among adolescents in military families during the COVID-19 pandemic: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Widely published findings from the COVID-19 pandemic show adverse effects on body mass index (BMI) and behavioral health in both adults and children, due to factors such as illness, job loss, and limited opportunity for physical and social activity. This study investigated whether these adverse effects were mitigated in adolescents from military families, who are universally insured with consistent access to healthcare, and who generally have at least one parent who must adhere to physical and mental fitness as a condition of employment. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study using

The influence of continuous prenatal exposure to valproic acid on physical, nociceptive, emotional and psychomotor responses during adolescence in mice: Dose-related effects within sexes.

Clinical findings show that the use of valproic acid (VPA) during pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects and autism spectrum disorder in offspring. Although there is a consensus that monitoring of potential long-term outcomes of VPA exposure is needed, especially in undiagnosed individuals, preclinical studies addressing this issue are rare. The present study examined the effects of continuous intrauterine exposure to a wide dose range of VPA (50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg/day) on the physical and behavioral response in peripubertal mice as a rodent model of adolescence. Body weight and t

iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomics analysis of Sprague-Dawley rats liver reveals perfluorooctanoic acid-induced lipid metabolism and urea cycle dysfunction.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a typical C8 representative compound of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) widely used in industrial and domestic products. It is a persistent organic pollutant found in the environment as well as in the tissues of humans and wildlife. Despite emerging scientific and public interest, the precise mechanisms of PFOA toxicity remain unclear. In this study, male rats were exposed to 1.25, 5, and 20 mg PFOA/kg body weight/day for 14 days by gavage; food intake and bodyweight changes were recorded every day. After 14 days, blood was collected for se

Effects of long-term in vivo micro-CT imaging on hallmarks of osteopenia and frailty in aging mice.

In vivo micro-CT has already been used to monitor microstructural changes of bone in mice of different ages and in models of age-related diseases such as osteoporosis. However, as aging is accompanied by frailty and subsequent increased sensitivity to external stimuli such as handling and anesthesia, the extent to which longitudinal imaging can be applied in aging studies remains unclear. Consequently, the potential of monitoring individual mice during the entire aging process-from healthy to frail status-has not yet been exploited. In this study, we assessed the effects of long-term in vivo m

N-Acetylcysteine prevents the decreases in cardiac collagen I/III ratio and systolic function in neonatal mice with prenatal alcohol exposure.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is often associated with congenital heart defects, most commonly septal, valvular, and great vessel defects. However, there have been no known studies on whether PAE affects the resulting fibroblast population after development, and whether this has any consequences in the postnatal period. Our previous study focused on the effects of PAE on the postnatal fibroblast population, which translated into changes in cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) composition and cardiac function in the neonatal heart. Moreover, our lab has previously demonstrated that alcohol-indu
