Single modality versus dual modality treatment for trichotillomania: sertraline, behavioral therapy, or both?

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania is a psychiatric condition characterized by chronic hair pulling. Both cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have shown promise in the treatment of trichotillomania, with comparison studies favoring CBT over pharmacotherapy. However, no randomized, controlled studies to date have compared the efficacy of individual SSRI or CBT treatment to the combination of both treatment modalities. METHOD: In this study, which ran from February 2000 through April 2003, subjects who met DSM-IV criteria for trichotillomania wer

The selective 5-HT6 receptor antagonist Ro4368554 restores memory performance in cholinergic and serotonergic models of memory deficiency in the rat.

Antagonists at serotonin type 6 (5-HT(6)) receptors show activity in models of learning and memory. Although the underlying mechanism(s) are not well understood, these effects may involve an increase in acetylcholine (ACh) levels. The present study sought to characterize the cognitive-enhancing effects of the 5-HT(6) antagonist Ro4368554 (3-benzenesulfonyl-7-(4-methyl-piperazin-1-yl)1H-indole) in a rat object recognition task employing a cholinergic (scopolamine pretreatment) and a serotonergic- (tryptophan (TRP) depletion) deficient model, and compared its pattern of action with that of the a

The influence of sport type and acute stress on biological motion working memory: Adaptive neuro-behavioral performance in open-skill athletes.

BACKGROUND: Biological motion working memory (BMWM) plays a crucial role in athletes' dynamic information processing. Despite evidence of cognitive benefits from athletic training, the combined effects of sport type and acute stress on BMWM remain underexplored. This study investigated behavioral and neural responses during BMWM processing among open-skill athletes, closed-skill athletes, and non-specialized participants, with a focus on the moderating effects of acute stress. METHODS: Sixty-five healthy male participants (21 closed-skill athletes, 18 open-skill athletes, and 26 non-specializ

Mental health interventions for carers of individuals with eating disorders: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials assessing efficacy on anxiety and depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Carers of individuals with eating disorders (EDs) often experience high levels of psychological distress, which can lead to anxiety and depressive symptoms. While several interventions have been developed to support carers, the effectiveness on their mental health remains unclear. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing mental health interventions for carers of individuals with EDs, with anxiety and depressive symptoms defined as outcomes of interest. Searches were performed across major electronic databases up to 31 October 2025.

Concerns, Priorities, and Pathways: Healthcare Provider Perspectives on Implementing Tuberculosis Preventive Treatment for People with HIV in Indonesia and the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis preventive therapy (TPT) is a cornerstone intervention for reducing TB incidence among people living with HIV, yet its integration into routine care remains inconsistent in high-burden settings. While policy frameworks are well established, less is known about how frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) operationalize TPT within constraint health systems. Thisstudy explores healthcare workers' (HCWs) perspectives on TPT implementation in Indonesia and the Philippines using normalization process theory (NPT), to understand how TPT is (or fails to be) embedded in everyday cl

"When Rest Feels Wrong": A Qualitative Study of Rest Intolerance Among Nursing Interns and Implications for Workforce Resilience.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the psychological experience and underlying mechanisms of "rest intolerance" among nursing interns. BACKGROUND: Effective recovery is essential for preventing burnout and ensuring patient safety. However, nursing interns often experience "rest intolerance", a paradoxical psychological state where resting induces distress rather than recovery. As interns represent the future pipeline of the nursing workforce, understanding this phenomenon is critical for managers aiming to build resilient teams and reduce early-career attrition. DESIGN: A qualitative interpretive phenome

Evidence of rTMS for Motor or Cognitive Stroke Recovery: Hype or Hope?

BACKGROUND: Evidence of efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for stroke recovery is hampered by an unexplained variability of reported effect sizes and an insufficient understanding of mechanisms of action. We aimed to (1) briefly summarize evidence of efficacy, (2) identify critical factors to explain the reported variation in effects, and (3) provide mechanism-based recommendations for future trials. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the literature according to Cochrane and PRISMA Protocols. We included trials with ≥10 patients per treatment group. We c

A scoping review of eye tracking metrics used to assess visuomotor behaviours of upper limb prosthesis users.

Advanced upper limb prostheses aim to restore coordinated hand and arm function. However, this objective can be difficult to quantify as coordinated movements require an intact visuomotor system. Eye tracking has recently been applied to study the visuomotor behaviours of upper limb prosthesis users by enabling the calculation of eye movement metrics. This scoping review aims to characterize the visuomotor behaviours of upper limb prosthesis users as described by eye tracking metrics, to summarize the eye tracking metrics used to describe prosthetic behaviour, and to identify gaps in the liter

The relationship between phonological processing and arithmetic in children with learning disabilities.

Phonological processing skills have not only been shown to be important for reading skills, but also for arithmetic skills. Specifically, previous research in typically developing children has suggested that phonological processing skills may be more closely related to arithmetic problems that are solved through fact retrieval (e.g., remembering the solution from memory) than procedural computation (e.g., counting). However, the relationship between phonological processing and arithmetic in children with learning disabilities (LDs) has not been investigated. Yet, understanding these relationsh
