Materials and Systems for Solar-Driven Interfacial Evaporation: From Material Design to System Integration and Engineering Applications.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SIE) has emerged as a transformative, off-grid technology that confines heat at the air-liquid interface, enabling high-efficiency vapor generation for decentralized water purification. Here, we present a comprehensive and critical review of the field, tracing its evolution from fundamental photothermal principles to integrated multifunctional systems. We first elucidate the thermodynamics of interfacial heat localization and the resultant enhancement in evaporation efficiency. We then systematically analyze material innovation strategies-including broadba

Mitochondrial dysfunction-induced PANoptosis: Mechanisms, triggers, and disease implications.

In recent years, PANoptosis, as a novel form of cell death that integrates multiple cell death pathways, has progressively emerged as a cutting-edge research field in the study of cell death and immune regulation. PANoptosis, a recently proposed form of inflammatory programmed cell death, integrates features of pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis, while emphasizing their interplay. It is mediated by the PANoptosome and plays a pivotal role in infections, inflammation, tumors, and degenerative diseases. Recent studies have demonstrated that ROS serve as critical signaling molecules for PANop

Thermal degradation of differently structured blend amines used in CO2 capture studies.

High thermal stability amine solvents are critical for post-combustion CO2 capture. For this, two novel ternary blended amine systems, AMP-AEP-MDEA and AMP-HMDA-MDEA were developed to overcome the limitations of traditional monoethanolamine (MEA) due to its poor thermal stability. The results demonstrated that both the chosen ternary systems exhibited superior CO2 absorption-desorption performance compared to 30 wt% MEA due to synergistic kinetic effects and high molar amine density, emphasizing the importance of environmental management. To rigorously evaluate long-term durability, accelerate

miR-26a-5p Activates Antiviral Innate Immunity via Direct Binding and Activation of RIG-I.

Emerging evidence has revealed the critical roles of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the regulation of innate immune responses. Nevertheless, it remains poorly understood whether specific miRNAs can directly modulate retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I), a principal sensor of cytoplasmic viral RNA and a key initiator of antiviral innate immunity. In this study, we identified miR-26a-5p as a potent activator of the innate antiviral immune responses. Notably, this activation operates independently of the canonical miRNA pathways of translational repression and mRNA degradation. Instead, we demonstrated

Anaphylaxis in pregnancy: diagnostic blind spots, epinephrine hesitancy, and emerging prevention strategies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Anaphylaxis during pregnancy is uncommon but remains one of the most critical emergencies in obstetric medicine because maternal deterioration and fetal hypoxia evolve simultaneously. Despite established treatment recommendations, diagnostic uncertainty and persistent concerns regarding epinephrine use continue to contribute to jeopardize preventable morbidity/mortality. This review examines recent advances in the recognition, management, and prevention of pregnancy-associated anaphylaxis, with emphasis on emerging concepts that may improve maternal-fetal safety. RECENT FIN

Vasoplegia in Cardiac Surgery and Mechanical Circulatory Support: From Cardiopulmonary Bypass to Advanced Circulatory Support Devices.

Vasoplegia remains one of the most challenging and incompletely understood complications across the spectrum of mechanical circulatory support (MCS). Initially described following cardiopulmonary bypass, it is increasingly recognized in patients supported with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO) and combined unloading strategies such as ECPELLA (ECMO and Impella support) as well as in patients bridged to heart transplantation with temporary or durable mechanical circulatory support (MCS). Despite occurring in different clinical settings, these syndromes share common pa

PAF Triggered Pyroptotic NETosis Aggravates Myocardial Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury.

Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (MI/R) injury remains a critical challenge in cardiovascular therapeutics, with metabolic-inflammatory signaling axis emerging as a critical mediator of pathological outcomes. Yet, the specific metabolic pathways interplay with inflammation to exacerbate MI/R injury remain poorly defined. Here we verify that NETosis of neutrophils is an initiative and causal factor in driving MI/R injury, specifically, platelet activating factor (PAF) secreted by cardiomyocytes during MI/R, drives neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation and subsequent NETosis. Increased

Piezo2+ Mechanosensory Neurons Orchestrate Heterotopic Ossification in Achilles Tendon.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) of the Achilles tendon induces pain and impairs tendon mechanical function, yet its pathogenic mechanisms remain largely unknown. Given that neurotransmitters, inflammatory cytokines, and mechanical loading are highly associated with HO incidence, we raised a hypothesis that activation of sensory neurons within the injured Achilles tendon may be one critical cause driving HO progression. This present work demonstrates that Netrin-1, predominantly secreted by macrophages at the injured site, profoundly promotes the regeneration of Piezo2-expressing sensory nerves i

Programming offspring bone health: mechanistic perspectives on maternal macro- and micronutrient intake.

Maternal nutrition is a critical determinant of offspring bone health through the process of fetal programming. Adequate intake of both macro- and micronutrients during pregnancy supports skeletal development, bone mineralization, and long-term bone health. In contrast, maternal undernutrition, overnutrition, or nutrient imbalance can impair bone quality, alter microarchitecture, and increase the risk of osteoporosis in later life. Emerging evidence indicates that these effects are mediated by hormonal regulation, oxidative stress, and epigenetic modifications that influence osteoblast functio

Cadmium-Induced Ferroptosis: Critical Evidence Assessment, Mechanistic Paradoxes, Dose Realism, and Translational Gaps in Toxicological Research.

Cadmium (Cd) is a globally persistent toxic metal with extraordinary biological retention and cumulative tissue toxicity. Ferroptosis has emerged as a proposed mechanism of Cd-induced cytotoxicity. However, current research is characterized by profound methodological heterogeneity, supraphysiological dosing, incomplete ferroptosis validation, overlapping cell death pathways, and inconsistent mechanistic interpretations. Here, we perform a systematic, mechanism-centered, and dose-aware critical review of Cd-induced ferroptosis, based on a newly established four-tier causality framework that dis

Mass Spectrometry-Based Proteomics Methods for Systematic Identification and Quantification of Protein O-Glycosylation in Complex Biological Samples.

Protein O-glycosylation is one of the most common and important modifications in human cells. It regulates protein folding, trafficking, stability, and interactions with other molecules, and its dysregulation is directly related to numerous diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Modern mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics provides a unique opportunity to systematically characterize O-glycosylated proteins. However, it is still extremely challenging due to the low abundance of many glycoproteins, the heterogeneity of O-glycans, and the complexity of biological samples. In th

The Impact of Endocrine Disruptor Exposure During Pregnancy on Bacterial Complications and Viral Infections: A Narrative Review.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a diverse group of environmental pollutants capable of interfering with hormonal and immune system regulation. In recent years, increasing concern has been raised about the effects of chemicals, including bisphenols, phthalates, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), insecticides, and parabens, on maternal and fetal health, primarily due to their widespread exposure in human populations. Pregnancy represents a critical window characterized by tightly regulated hormonal and immunological adaptations. Emerging evidence suggests that EDC exposure dur

Cutaneous Staphylococcus aureus Infections in Renal Edema Across Kidney Disease and the Intensive Care Unit: Pathophysiological Mechanisms, Clinical Implications, and Therapeutic Challenges.

Staphylococcus aureus, particularly methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), remains a leading cause of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) worldwide. Patients with renal edema, including those with nephrotic syndrome and chronic kidney disease (CKD), and critical illness, are particularly susceptible because of barrier dysfunction, immune impairment, and altered antimicrobial pharmacokinetics. This narrative review examines the mechanisms linking renal edema to increased susceptibility to cutaneous S. aureus infection and discusses their diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Single-cell transcriptomic atlas of human retina from Chinese donors reveals population-specific cellular diversity.

The human retina exhibits complex cellular heterogeneity which is critical for visual function, yet comprehensive ethnic-specific references are scarce in ophthalmic transcriptomics. The lack of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from Asian populations particularly Chinese donors imposes significant limitations in understanding population-specific retinal biology. We constructed the first comprehensive single-cell transcriptomic atlas of the human retina from Chinese donors, generated through high-throughput scRNA-seq of ∼290,000 viable cells obtained from 18 fresh retinal specimens (

Glucagon receptor signaling is indispensable for the healthspan effects of caloric restriction in aging male mice.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus accelerate aging, shortening the duration of healthspan. Conversely, chronic calorie restriction (CR) extends healthspan. Research aimed at understanding the mechanism by which CR slows aging has focused heavily on insulin and downstream signaling cascades. Glucagon, a hormone that counter-regulates insulin, is commonly affected by these same interventions. To investigate the role of glucagon in aging, we used dietary manipulation, global and liver-specific glucagon receptor knockout, and pharmacological glucagon receptor activation. We found that globally

Gut microbiota-derived formate exacerbates pulmonary metastasis in cancer.

Rationale: The gut microbiota and its metabolites significantly influence cancer development and metastasis. Among these, formate, the simplest short-chain fatty acid (SCFA), remains underexplored in the context of metastasis. This study investigates the role of microbiota-derived formate in exacerbating pulmonary metastasis in melanoma and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), aiming to elucidate its mechanistic contributions to cancer progression. Methods: Using antibiotics-induced dysbiosis in mice, we quantified plasma formate levels via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomics and

The structural requirements of 3,5-substituted oxindoles that determine selective AMPK or GSK3β inhibition.

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) acts as a central cellular sensor at the interface of metabolic and signaling networks, that supports cell survival in energetically unfavorable environments. Due to its role in the direct mediation of fatty acid oxidation via acetyl-CoA carboxylase 2 (ACC2), there has been intensive development of small molecule AMPK activators for the treatment of metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In cancer, AMPK inhibitors may be more effective in disrupting catabolic processes that support cancer cell survival and drug resistance

Precision Genomics: A Reality Having Universal Impact in a New Era of Psychiatry - Lessons Learned, Past and Present.

Addiction neuroscience explores the complex interplay between genetic, neurobiological, environmental, and socio-spiritual factors underlying substance and behavioral addictions. Over the past three decades, research in this domain has identified critical molecular and epigenetic mechanisms-particularly those affecting dopaminergic signaling and reward pathways-that contribute to both vulnerability and resilience to addictive behaviors. Central to this understanding is the concept of reward deficiency syndrome (RDS), first introduced by Kenneth Blum, which posits that hypodopaminergic function
