N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine adduct induces expression of chronic inflammation cytokines in retinal pigment epithelium cells.

Blindness due to photoreceptor degeneration is observed in both genetic and acquired eye disorders. Long blue light exposure can contribute to increase levels of oxidative compounds within the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), enhancing risk of retinal damage. In retina, reactive oxygen species contribute to the activation of inflammatory cascade. If chronic, this inflammatory response can result in photoreceptor death. Therefore, we investigated the effects of the endogenous adduct N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E) on RPE cells, in order to identify the most dysregulated cytokines an

Maternal immune activation generates anxiety in offspring: A translational meta-analysis.

Maternal immune activation (MIA) during pregnancy is recognized as an etiological risk factor for various psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and autism. Prenatal immune challenge may serve as a "disease primer" for alteration of the trajectory of fetal brain development that, in combination with other genetic and environmental factors, may ultimately result in the emergence of different psychiatric conditions. However, the association between MIA and an offspring's chance of developing anxiety disorders is less clear. To evaluate the effect of MIA on offsp

Toxic epidermal necrolysis with systemic lupus erythematosus: case report and review of the literature.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) are potentially fatal mucocutaneous diseases characterized by extensive necrosis and exfoliation of the epidermis. TEN and SJS are most often caused by various kinds of drugs. Other risk factors for SJS/TEN include pneumonia infection, HIV infection, genetic factors, underlying immune diseases, and tumors. SJS and TEN were first identified in 1922, but at present, a widely recognized view is that SJS and TEN represent phases in the continuous progress of the same disease. SJS/TEN has a very high mortality, but is rare, and cas

Association of serotonin system-related genes with homicidal behavior and criminal aggression in a prison population of Pakistani Origin.

The serotonin transporter (SLC6A4), 5-HT2A (HTR2A) and 5-HT2B (HTR2B) recepter genes, express proteins that are important regulators of serotonin reuptake and signaling, and thereby may contribute to the pathogenesis of aggressive criminal behavior. 370 sentenced murderers in Pakistani prisons and 359 men without any history of violence or criminal delinquency were genotyped for six candidate polymorphisms in SLC6A4, HTR2A and HTR2B genes. An association of higher expressing L/L and LA/LA variants of the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism was observed with homicidal behavior (bi-allelic: OR = 1.29, p = 0.0

Pathogenesis and clinical features of alopecia in epidermolysis bullosa: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of rare genetic skin diseases characterized by the gene mutations encoding adhesion proteins within the skin. These adhesion proteins are also present in normal hair follicles. Anecdotally, there have been reports of scalp alopecia as a complication of EB and there are scattered cases in the literature, but alopecia has generally been overlooked in severe blistering diseases because it is regarded as a cosmetic issue. Therefore, there is no consensus about the natural history and clinical manifestations of alopecia in EB to allow potential inte
