Adenovirus 5 (Ad-5) infection is a common cause of acute respiratory infections and the main vector used in gene therapy. There are few studies on the relationship of Ad-5 to obesity. In the present study, we evaluated the chronic effects of Ad-5 infection on golden (Syrian) hamsters fed either a balanced diet (BD) or a high-fat diet (HFD). After a single inoculation with Ad-5 (1 × 107 pfu), the body weight of the animals was measured weekly. Medium-term (22 weeks) serum biochemical analyses and long-term (44 weeks) liver morphology, adiposity, and locomotive functionality (movement velocity)

There is a clear link between obesity and cardiovascular disease, but the complexity of this interaction in mammals makes it difficult to st … tion within the myocardium and rather store excess triglycerides in large lipid droplets within the fat body. Our findings provide a new model to investigate obesity-associated heart dysfunction.

Decreased carotid arterial compliance has been reported in obese subjects and animals. Carotid baroreceptors are located at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery, and respond to distension of the arterial wall, suggesting that higher pressure is required to obtain the same distension in obese subjects and animals. A hyperosmotic NaCl solution induces circulatory volume expansion and arterial pressure (AP) increase, which reflexively augment renal excretion. Thus, we hypothesized that sodium regulation via the baroreflex might be impaired in response to chronic hyperosmotic NaCl infusion

Despite evidence that dietary fat intake may influence breast cancer risk, there is little information about the effects of dietary fat on the human breast. We have studied the effects of dietary fat on the breast by examining the influence of dietary fat reduction on mammographic dysplasia (nodular or sheetlike areas of radiological density). Subjects with mammographic dysplasia were randomly allocated to a control group, in which they received advice about maintaining a balanced diet (36% of calories as fat), or an intervention group, in which they were taught to reduce dietary fat to a targ

Introduction Hypertension is one of the most potent risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Transport workers are frequently exposed to multiple health risks, and undiagnosed hypertension among commercial drivers may result in severe road accidents. Objective The study aimed at assessing the multidimensional relationship between risk factors for hypertension among transport workers in Nigeria. Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted among 682 transport workers (≥18 years) recruited from motor parks across the Ibadan metropolis. Data were extracted from the Community-Based Inve

Evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia on patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the influence of sarcopenia on disease activity and factors associated with sarcopenia. One hundred and twenty-three patients aged over 18 years with RA based on the 1987 ACR/EULAR classification criteria were enrolled. We performed a whole body DXA scan using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanner lunar prodigy to measure fat mass, lean mass, and bone mass in the whole body and body parts. According to the anthropometric equation by Baumgartner et al., sarcopenia was defined as Relative skeletal mass i

PURPOSE: Body mass index (BMI) is associated with the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) receiving immunotherapy. Body compositions are considered to account for this association, but this hypothesis has yet to be verified conclusively.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our study included 305 patients received immunotherapy at 3 centers between August 2018 and February 2022. We calculated skeletal muscle index (SMI), mean skeletal muscle density (SMD), subcutaneous adipose tissue index (SATI), visceral adipose tissue index (VATI), and visceral to subcutaneous adipose tissue area ratio (VSR) at l

Thyroid hormone mimetics are alluring potential therapies for diseases like dyslipidemia, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and insulin resistance. Though diiodothyronines are thought inactive, pharmacologic treatment with 3,5- Diiodo-L-Thyronine (T2) reportedly reduces hepatic lipid content and improves glucose tolerance in fat-fed male rats. To test this, male Sprague Dawley rats fed a safflower-oil based high-fat diet were treated with T2 (0.25 mg/kg-d) or vehicle. Neither 10 nor 30 days of T2 treatment had an effect on weight, adiposity, plasma fatty acids, or hepatic steatosis. In

Lipedema refers to the abnormal deposition of subcutaneous fat causing a striking enlargement of the lower extremities that is out of proportion to the upper body. Most clinicians are unaware of this disease and thus it is seldom diagnosed correctly. Cutaneous myiasis is the infestation of skin by fly larvae. We describe an unusual case of a woman with lipedema who developed cutaneous myiasis.

The factors which are involved in the development of diabetes and obesity have been reviewed. These include the age of the individual, the duration and magnitude of the obesity, whether there is a family history of diabetes mellitus, the regional distribution of body fat, and the function of the pancreatic islet. These factors help in understanding the reasons why obesity poses such a high risk for developing diabetes mellitus.

It is known that adverse stimuli, such as altered diets during pregnancy and lactation, can result in deleterious effects on the progeny. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible gastrointestinal repercussions in the offspring of Wistar rats exposed to high-fat diets. Pregnant rats were divided into three groups: normolipidic diet (3.5% lipids), a diet containing 28% lipids, and a diet with 40% lipids. Body weight and food, water, daily caloric, and macronutrient intake were evaluated in the pregnant rats. Structural and functional gastrointestinal parameters were assessed in 30-day-

The number of obese people is increasing dramatically worldwide, and one of the major causes of obesity is excess energy due to high-fat diets. Several studies have shown that reducing food and energy intake represents a key intervention or treatment to combat overweight/obesity. Here, we conducted a 12-week energy-restricted dietary intervention for high-fat diet-induced obese mice (C57BL/6J) to investigate the effectiveness of diet change in improving obesity. The results revealed that the diet change from HFD to NFD significantly reduced weight gain and subcutaneous adipose tissue weight in

OBJECTIVES: Children with esophageal atresia (EA) often have feeding difficulties and dysphagia, which may compromise their nutritional status. This study aimed to compare dietary intake between children with EA and matched healthy controls (HC) and to investigate the relationship between dietary factors, growth, dysphagia, and feeding difficulties in the EA cohort.
METHODS: This cross-sectional cohort study recruited children with EA and HC aged 2-17 years from a tertiary pediatric hospital in Australia. Growth parameters were measured. Dietary intake was assessed using the validated Austral

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Glycogen storage disease type V (GSDV) or McArdle disease is a muscle glycogenosis that classically manifests with exercise intolerance and exercise-induced muscle pain. Muscle weakness and wasting may occur, but it is typically mild and described as located around the shoulder girdle in elderly patients. Paraspinal muscle involvement has received little attention in the literature. This study aimed to quantify fat replacement of paraspinal, shoulder, and lower limb muscles by magnetic resonance imaging in a European cohort of patients with GSDV.

Pre-pregnancy obesity is a contributing factor for impairments in offspring metabolic health. Interventional strategies during pregnancy are a potential approach to alleviate and/or prevent obesity and obesity related metabolic alterations in the offspring. Fish oil (FO), rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) exerts metabolic health benefits. However, the role of FO in early life remains still unknown. Hence, this study objective was to determine the effect of FO supplementation in mice from pre-pregnancy through lactation, and to study the post-natal metabolic health effects

BACKGROUND: The incidence of obesity and diabetes is increasing rapidly. Optimal management is still elusive. Obesity associated with type 2 diabetes is known to cause adipose tissue inflammation, increase oxidative stress, and cause white fat hyperplasia and mitochondrial dysfunction. In this study, we investigated whether mitochondrial and cytosolic antioxidant-upregulated mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) delivery reduces oxidative stress and subsequently improves glucose tolerance, reduce systemic inflammation, and improves fatty liver disease in diet-induced obese (DIO) mouse models.

Previous studies have shown that modified apelin analogues exhibited enzyme resistance in plasma and improved circulating half-life compared to apelin-13. This study investigated the antidiabetic effects of chronic administration of stable long acting fatty acid modified apelin analogues, namely, (Lys8GluPAL)apelin-13 amide and pGlu(Lys8GluPAL)apelin-13 amide, in high-fat fed obese-diabetic mice. Male NIH Swiss mice (groups n = 8) were maintained either on a high-fat diet (45% fat) from 8 to 28 weeks old, or control mice were fed a normal diet (10% fat). When diet induced obesity-diabetes was

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of dietary betaine over a range of concentrations (between 0 and 0.5%) on growth and body composition in young feed-restricted pigs. Betaine is associated with decreased lipid deposition and altered protein utilization in finishing pigs, and it has been suggested that the positive effects of betaine on growth and carcass composition may be greater in energy-restricted pigs. Thirty-two barrows (36 kg, n = 8 pigs per group) were restrictively fed one of four corn-soybean meal-skim milk based diets (18.6% crude protein, 3.23 Mcal ME/kg) and sup
