Triclosan exposure, transformation, and human health effects.

Triclosan (TCS) is an antimicrobial used so ubiquitously that 75% of the US population is likely exposed to this compound via consumer goods and personal care products. In September 2016, TCS was banned from soap products following the risk assessment by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, TCS still remains, at high concentrations, in other personal care products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, hand sanitizer, and surgical soaps. TCS is readily absorbed into human skin and oral mucosa and found in various human tissues and fluids. The aim of this review was to describe TCS expos

Ecological Opportunity, Evolution, and the Emergence of Flea-Borne Plague.

The plague bacillus Yersinia pestis is unique among the pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae in utilizing an arthropod-borne transmission route. Transmission by fleabite is a recent evolutionary adaptation that followed the divergence of Y. pestis from the closely related food- and waterborne enteric pathogen Yersinia pseudotuberculosis A combination of population genetics, comparative genomics, and investigations of Yersinia-flea interactions have disclosed the important steps in the evolution and emergence of Y. pestis as a flea-borne pathogen. Only a few genetic changes, representing both gene gai

Stress psychobiology in the context of addiction medicine: from drugs of abuse to behavioral addictions.

In this chapter, we briefly review the basic biology of psychological stress and the stress response. We propose that psychological stress and the neurobiology of the stress response play in substance use initiation, maintenance, and relapse. The proposed mechanisms for this include, on the one hand, the complex interactions between biological mediators of the stress response and the dopaminergic reward system and, on the other hand, mediators of the stress response and other systems crucial in moderating key addiction-related behaviors such as endogenous opioids, the sympathetic-adrenal-medul

Severe growing-up phobia, a condition explained in a 14-year-old boy.

We present the clinical case of a 14-year-old boy with gerascophobia or an excessive fear of aging, who felt his body development as a threat, to the point where he took extreme measures to stop or otherwise hide growth. He had a history of separation anxiety, sexual abuse, and suffering bullying. He presented with anxious and depressive symptoms and food restriction, criticized his body image, had negative feelings towards the maturation process, suffered at the thought of being rejected, and was preoccupied with certain physical characteristics. We conducted an analysis of biological, psycho

[Ferrous sulfate: acute poisoning with a frequent use drug].

The iron is the main component of hemoglobin and is also part of myoglobin and enzymes. Its deficit is the most common cause of nutritional anemia in humans. The use of iron salts is very common in children, because they are indicated for prophylaxis and treatment of iron deficiency anemia. The availability in households and the emergence of flavored formulations that promote adherence to treatment, greatly assist in this type of poisoning. Usually, the overdose is considered a low hazard, because it is a mineral supplement added in many of the baby food. Iron in free state is able of producin

Zoonoses associated with fish.

The taxonomic group that composes the fishes is the most diverse group of vertebrates worldwide. The challenges of unique physiologies, a foreign environment, and many unknowns attract a passionate group of biologists and veterinarians. Economically, fishes have become vital as food, bait, and companion animals. Fishermen and fish handlers (processing plants) represent the historical human population exposed to fish zoonoses, but growth in aquaculture and aquarium hobbyists have led to an increase in published fish-borne zoonotic cases starting in the late 1950s that bloomed in the 1980s. Poly-L-lactic acid for the treatment of trauma-induced facial lipoatrophy and asymmetry.

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated lipoatrophy. Over the past several years, PLLA has been increasingly used as a treatment for lipoatrophy secondary to the natural process of aging. There have been no reports on the use of PLLA for trauma-induced facial lipoatrophy and asymmetry. In this article, we review the safety, effectiveness, treatment guidelines, mechanism of action, and quality-of-life (QOL) impact of PLLA. We present a patient with facial lipoatrophy and asymmetry secon

[Is dichloromethane an occupational carcinogen?].

Dichloromethane (DCM) has been widely used in Poland and worldwide as a pesticide fumigant to preserve seed and fruit, in the manufacture of polyurethane, in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food-processing industry. It isalso used as an ingredient of fire extinguishing formulations and as a cooling agent in refrigerators. Because of dichloromethane's widespread use, its multisystemic toxic activity and a significant number of the exposed people, it is important to assess occupational risk for dichloromethane. In Poland, the maximum admissible concentration of dichloromethane based on its carc

Indium-111 satumomab pendetide: the first FDA-approved monoclonal antibody for tumor imaging.

Colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer mortality. Ovarian cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy cause of death in women. A labeled monoclonal antibody attaches to a tumor-associated antigen and allows these tumor masses to be imaged or treated, depending on the radionuclide used. Indium-111 satumomab pendetide was the first labeled monoclonal antibody to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for tumor imaging. It is reactive with most colorectal and ovarian cancers, as well as other cancers. After reading this article, the technologist will understand

Diseases Transmitted by Foods Contaminated by Wastewater.

A historical and world-wide review of medical and engineering literature discloses that typhoid fever, infectious hepatitis, fascioliasis, and cholera are the diseases that have been most frequently transmitted by foods contaminated by sewage or irrigation water in agricultural or aquacultural practices. Wastewater-contaminated shellfish have resulted in 28 outbreaks of illness, watercress in 10, fish in three, and shrimp in one. Vegetables contaminated by night soil or raw or partially treated sewage were reported as vehicles in 21 outbreaks. Fruits were considered as vehicles in four outbrea

Cell recovery and DNA extraction methods skew relative abundance estimations of foodborne pathogens and spoilage organisms on stainless steel surfaces.

UNLABELLED: Amplicon sequencing investigations of surface microbiota in food facilities often report the relative abundance of bacteria and fungi. However, physiological differences among cell types can result in variable cell recovery and DNA yields, thereby skewing relative abundance estimates. Here, we evaluated (i) variations in cell recovery among different bacterial and fungal species after surface swabbing and (ii) the impact of DNA extraction protocols on relative abundance estimates from artificially inoculated stainless steel surfaces. Our results showed that Escherichia coli (Gram-n

The influence of traditional food consumption on Cameroonian immigrants' perception of type 2 diabetes in Minnesota: an exploratory qualitative study.

PURPOSE: This study explored how traditional food consumption shapes perceptions of type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk among nondiabetic Cameroonian immigrants residing in Minnesota, USA. The focus was on participants' dietary behaviors, lifestyle adaptations, and experiences with the U. S. healthcare system. Guided by an integrated theoretical framework-including the Health Belief Model (HBM), socioecological theory (SEM), risk/protective factors, and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)-the study aimed to understand perceived influences rather than establish causal effects. METHODS: Thirteen Cameroonian i

Exploring the Dietary Behaviour of Students Who Limit Their Intake of Animal-Source Foods: Secondary Analysis of a Nationally Representative Undergraduate Student Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Plant-based nutrition is gaining in popularity for many reasons relating to health, sustainability and animal welfare. While there is potential for diets with low or no animal source foods (ASF) to be healthy, this is not necessarily the case. Emerging adults may be at the forefront of a social movement away from ASF in the UK. This age group also have generally poor diets. Modern day plant-based diets, particularly those followed by younger people, may include more convenience foods and less fruit and vegetables than traditional plant-based diets. This study aims to examine whet

Flowers as Dishes With Cultural Flavors: Nutritional Profiles and Taste Characteristics of Four Edible Flower Species in Yunnan, China.

Flowers are commonly consumed as vegetables and constitute an important component of local diets in many traditional food systems. In regions such as Yunnan, China, edible flowers (EFs) are deeply embedded in biocultural food practices but remain underrepresented in mainstream nutritional and sensory research. This study characterized the nutritional and sensory properties of traditionally consumed EFs of four species (Musella lasiocarpa, Plumeria rubra, Stephanotis volubilis, and Trevesia palmata) from Yunnan. Proximate composition, mineral elements, vitamins, and amino acids of four EFs were

Reverse-engineered exclusive enteral nutrition as induction therapy in pediatric Crohn's disease: Effects on environmental toxin exposure.

Exclusive Enteral Nutrition (EEN) can induce remission in Crohn's disease (CD). We completed a pilot study using novel reverse-engineered EEN (RE-EEN), a whole food smoothie in place of commercial liquid formula (EEN) which contains food additives to improve shelf stability and palatability. In a four week trial with RE-EEN, we reported 80 % of patients went into clinical remission after four weeks. We hypothesized RE-EEN would decrease environmental toxin exposure through reduction of processing food intake. Biosamples were collected at baseline and at weeks two, four, and eight during the RE

Data-driven high-performance liquid chromatography method for the simultaneous analysis of disodium guanylate and disodium inosinate in mushrooms.

With the growing demand for high-throughput analyses that can detect diverse molecules with varying physicochemical properties in shorter times, researchers are increasingly focused on developing or modifying analytical methods. This is particularly relevant in the food, pharmaceutical/nutraceutical, cosmetic, agricultural, and environmental industries. This study aimed to modify, establish, and validate a high-performance liquid chromatography method with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) for the simultaneous determination of disodium guanylate (GMP) and disodium inosinate (IMP) in mushrooms, u
