Vibroarthrographic signals have been proposed as a noninvasive tool for the diagnosis of joint injury. Models of VAG generation and transmission are required before application of this technique can begin. An experiment has been designed and performed to estimate sound transmission in the human knee at set joint angles. Linear frequency domain models and linear and nonlinear time domain models were estimated from the experimental data. Because variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in humans probably results from consumption of products contaminated with tissue from animals with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, whether infectious prion protein is present in ruminant muscles is a crucial question. Here we show that experimentally and naturally scrapie-affected sheep accumulate the prion protein PrP(Sc) in a myocyte subset. Retrospective epidemiological data have indicated that cutaneous malignant melanoma may arise as a consequence of intense, intermittent exposure of the skin to ultraviolet radiation, particularly in children, rather than from the cumulative lifetime exposure that is associated with other forms of skin cancer. Many variables are believed to affect the accurate measuring of metallic restoration electrical potentials. This study examined the effects of intra- versus extra-oral location of the reference electrode, the type of metallic probe used to make contact with the restoration, and scratching and brushing of the restoration surface. In a murine model of experimental cutaneous leishmaniasis, we investigated the protection elicited by injection of histone H1 isolated from parasites by perchloric extraction, of a H1 recombinant protein produced in E. coli, and of H1 long and short synthetic peptides, against infection by L. major. Pyloric stenosis (PS) is a common condition in infancy, which is associated with smooth muscle hypertrophy that results in pyloric outlet obstruction. The author examines the ontogeny of the peptide innervation of the pylorus in fetal tissues and an experimental model in mice and evaluates the histochemical and morphological changes in the pylorus. The data suggest that PS is an intrauterine lesion that occurs by 12 weeks' gestation. The hypothesis is advanced that blindness from an early age may lead to a reduced risk of breast cancer through altered patterns of melatonin secretion by the pineal gland. The available experimental evidence in animals and in vitro is consistent with this hypothesis. We examined the value of ultrasound to determine the retroversion of the humerus in an experimental and clinical study. In twenty human upper arms of corpses the retroversion angle was measured by ultrasound and by direct means using a paralellograph. The angle was also evaluated by sonography and CAT scan in 7 patients, and in 6 patients by sonography and x-ray. Scalp-SEPs to peroneal nerve stimulation were abnormal in a patient with an intradural meningeoma which was compressing the antero-lateral quadrant of the 1st and, partly, the 2nd cervical myelomers. Experimental evidence suggests that renal 1 alpha-hydroxylase activity is impaired in Fanconi syndrome. We have evaluated plasma vitamin D metabolites in five patients with Fanconi syndrome, three of whom had metabolic bone disease; plasma 1,25(OH)2D3 was low in the three patients with bone disease, and normal in the two patients without a bone mineralisation defect. Experimental models of meningeal gliomatosis (MG) have been produced by intracisternal inoculation of C6 glioma and 9L glioma cells into Wistar and Fisher 344 rats, respectively. The tumor growth was steady and fast in both MG models if 10(6) cells were implanted. Median survival time(MST) of rats inoculated with tumor cells was inversely related to the number of cells inoculated. The clinicopathological features observed in both MG models were similar to those seen in diffuse leptomeningeal involvement of gliomas in human beings.
