Interleukin-25 Induces Resistance Against Intestinal Trematodes.

Echinostoma caproni is an intestinal trematode that has been extensively used as an experimental model to investigate the factors determining the resistance to intestinal helminths or the development of chronic infections. ICR mice are permissive hosts for E. caproni in which chronic infections are developed, concomitantly with local Th1 responses, elevated levels of local IFN-γ, inflammation and antibody responses. However, mice develop partial resistance to homologous challenge infections after cure of a primary infection, which converts this subject into an adequate model for the study of t

The Vagus Nerve in Appetite Regulation, Mood, and Intestinal Inflammation.

Although the gastrointestinal tract contains intrinsic neural plexuses that allow a significant degree of independent control over gastrointestinal functions, the central nervous system provides extrinsic neural inputs that modulate, regulate, and integrate these functions. In particular, the vagus nerve provides the parasympathetic innervation to the gastrointestinal tract, coordinating the complex interactions between central and peripheral neural control mechanisms. This review discusses the physiological roles of the afferent (sensory) and motor (efferent) vagus in regulation of appetite,

Restoration of intestinal function in an MPTP model of Parkinson's Disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease often experience non-motor symptoms including constipation, which manifest prior to the onset of debilitating motor signs. Understanding the causes of these non-motor deficits and developing disease modifying therapeutic strategies has the potential to prevent disease progression. Specific neuronal subpopulations were reduced within the myenteric plexus of mice 21 days after intoxication by the intraperitoneal administration of MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) and was associated with a reduction in stool frequency, indicative of intestinal d

Shear Modulus of the Partially Obstructed Rat Small Intestine.

A number of factors influence gastrointestinal tissue structure and mechanical properties such as the physical environment and diseases like partial obstruction. Hence multi-axial biomechanical properties are important for understanding the pathophysiology of the obstructed intestine. The aim was to estimate the multi-axial biomechanical properties, in particular with focus on the shear modulus. Partial obstruction of mid-jejunum was created surgically by placement of a polyethylene ring for two weeks in seven male rats. Sham operation was made in five other rats. At the time for termination,

[Two Cases of Small Intestinal Metastasis of Lung Cancer].

Case 1: A 66-year-old man who had undergone upper right lobe resection for large cell lung carcinoma 2 months earlier presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. Computed tomography showed intussusception of the small intestine. Partial resection of the small intestine was performed. The tumor was pathologically diagnosed as lung cancer metastasis to the small intestine. The patient died 30 days after surgery. Case 2: A 57-year-old man was admitted to hospital due to appetite loss. Computed tomography showed a large intestinal tumor and a small lung tumor, as well as multiple liver metastases

Is OM-3 synergistic with GLP-2 in intestinal failure?

INTRODUCTION: Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is a known intestinal growth factor that enhances mucosal mass and function in residual small intestine after massive small bowel resection (MSBR). Luminal omega-3 (OM-3) has been shown to have some growth factor properties. It is possible that their mechanisms of action differ. Thus, we hypothesized that administering these two substances together may have a synergistic effect. METHODS: A total of 60 adult female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent 80% MSBR and divided as follows (n = 15/group): Saline (Control) + regular feeds; GLP-2 + regular feeds;

Primary Enterolith in a Patient with Intestinal Tuberculosis: A Case Report.

Primary enterolithiasis is a rare surgical ailment. The underlying cause is intestinal stasis. Numerous anatomical and micro environmental factors such as enteritis, incarcerated hernia, malignancy, diverticula, blind loops, and enteroenterostomy predispose to clinically significant concretions. Enterolithiasis in tuberculosis can be due to the presence of strictures, intestinal bands, or interbowel/parietal adhesions, leading to intestinal stasis. Secondary enterolithiasis is generally caused by gallstones or renal stones migrating to the gastrointestinal tract due to fistula formation. Durin

[First combined intestinal and abdominal wall transplantation in the Netherlands].

BACKGROUND: When total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is not an option, intestinal transplantation is the sole treatment for patients with end-stage intestinal failure to increase the chance of long-term survival. However, in 20-33% of patients, abdominal wall-related complications occur after isolated intestinal transplantation. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient is a 24-year-old woman with ultra-short bowel syndrome, caused by a severely complicated history of Crohn's disease. After 5 years of TPN, the patient was referred for intestinal transplantation. In addition, an abdominal wall transplant was

Role of the Intestinal Microbiota in Host Responses to Stressor Exposure.

Humans have coevolved over time to not only tolerate but also rely on trillions of microbes that aid in the development of our immune system, provide nutrients, break down potentially noxious substances, and act as a barrier against potentially pathogenic organisms. These microbes, collectively known as the microbiota, live in relatively stable communities on mucosal surfaces such as the respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. Changes to the microbiota are often transient, due to changes in diet, antibiotic exposure, and psychological stressor exposure. This chapter will discuss how psyc

Antibiotics impair murine hematopoiesis by depleting the intestinal microbiota.

Bone marrow suppression is an adverse effect associated with many antibiotics, especially when administered for prolonged treatment courses. Recent advances in our understanding of steady-state hematopoiesis have allowed us to explore the effects of antibiotics on hematopoietic progenitors in detail using a murine model. Antibiotic-treated mice exhibited anemia, thrombocytosis, and leukopenia, with pronounced pan-lymphopenia as demonstrated by flow cytometric analysis of peripheral blood. Bone marrow progenitor analysis revealed depletion of hematopoietic stem cells and multipotent progenitors

Intestinal lymphangiectasia in children. A favorable response to dietary modifications.

Intestinal lymphangiectasia (IL) is a rare disease characterized by dilatation of intestinal lymphatics. It can be classified as primary or secondary according to the underlying etiology. The clinical presentations of IL are pitting edema, chylous ascites, pleural effusion, acute appendicitis, diarrhea, lymphocytopenia, malabsorption, and intestinal obstruction. The diagnosis is made by intestinal endoscopy and biopsies. Dietary modification is the mainstay in the management of IL with a variable response. Here we report 2 patients with IL in Bahrain who showed positive response to dietary mod

Intestinal failure following necrotizing enterocolitis: A clinical approach.

Intestinal failure is a recognized complication of surgically-managed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Functional adaptation of remaining bowel means that many children are eventually able to achieve enteral autonomy. Integrated multidisciplinary care in the early post-operative phase is key to long-term success. The objective of this review is to outline a clinical approach to management of intestinal and nutritional complications experienced by children following intestinal resection for NEC.

Intestinal obstruction associated with ovarian remnant in postmenopausal female.

Ovarian remnant syndrome (ORS) is a rare condition, in which the ovarian tissue is inadvertently left behind after difficult oophorectomy. The most common preexisting conditions associated for this complication include endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and prior abdominal surgery as in these conditions, removal of ovarian tissue becomes difficult. This is likely due to the presence of the dense fibrotic adhesions between an ovary and the surrounding structures. This residual ovarian tissue can become functional and cystic. A 56-year-old multigravida postmenopausal female was diagnose

Intestinal parasites infection: protective effect in rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune inflammatory disease, with a progressive course, characterized by chronic synovitis that may evolve with deformities and functional disability, and whose early treatment minimizes joint damage. Its etiopathogenesis is not fully elucidated but comprises immunologic responses mediated by T helper cells (Th1). An apparent minor severity of RA in patients from regions with lower income could be associated with a higher prevalence of gut parasites, especially helminths. Strictly, a shift in the immune response toward the predominance of T helper ce

A Possible Role of Intestinal Microbiota in the Pathogenesis of Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the sacroiliac joints and the spine, for which the pathogenesis is thought to be a result of the combination of host genetic factors and environmental triggers. However, the precise factors that determine one's susceptibility to AS remain to be unraveled. With 100 trillion bacteria residing in the mammalian gut having established a symbiotic relation with their host influencing many aspects of host metabolism, physiology, and immunity, a growing body of evidence suggests that intestinal microbiota may play an imp
