Dual-laser measurement of human stapes footplate motion under blast exposure.

Hearing damage is one of the most frequently observed injuries in Service members and Veterans even though hearing protection devices (HPDs, e.g. earplugs) have been implemented to prevent blast-induced hearing loss. However, the formation and prevention mechanism of the blast-induced hearing damage remains unclear due to the difficulty for conducting biomechanical measurements in ears during blast exposure. Recently, an approach reported by Jiang et al. (2019) used two laser Doppler vibrometers (LDVs) to measure the motion of the tympanic membrane (TM) in human temporal bones during blast exp

Evaluation of the results of laser endopyelotomy with two different technique in ureteropelvic junction obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Failed pyeloplasty procedures are caused by large amounts of scarring, and peripelvic fibrosis. This finding has been associated with urinary extravasations to the operation, urosepsis or an excessive tissue reaction. The treatment options for secondary UPJO (Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction) are the same with the options for primary procedures: in cases of very poor renal function, various pyeloplasty forms (open and laparoscopic), and ureterocalicostomy or sometimes nephrectomy may be considered in severe renal function loss. Whereas, endoscopic treatment can be considered in

Airway Fire during Laser Surgery of the Vocal Cords in Children: A Case Report.

OBJECTIVES: Fire in the operating theater is a potential source of important morbidity for the patient. Laser surgery of the head and neck district presents a particularly high risk of fire due to the presence of all three elements of the 'fire triad,' necessary to cause combustive or explosive events: an oxidiser, a fuel, and a heat source. The aim of the present study is to emphasise the need of new prevention tools and greater adherence to the recommendations available in the literature. METHODS: The sudden occurrence of combustion within the airway of an infant undergoing laryngeal laser

NIR Laser Photobiomodulation Induces Neuroprotection in an In Vitro Model of Cerebral Hypoxia/Ischemia.

Brain photobiomodulation (PBM) is an innovative treatment for a variety of neurological conditions, including cerebral ischemia. However, the capability of PBM for ischemic stroke needs to be further explored and its mechanisms of action remain currently unclear. The aim of the present research was to identify a treatment protocol capable of inducing neuroprotection and to investigate the molecular mechanisms activated by a dual-wavelength near infrared (NIR) laser source in an organotypic hippocampal slice model of hypoxia/ischemia. Hippocampal slices were exposed to oxygen and glucose depriv

Outcomes of endoscopic chemo- and laser-cauterizations and open fistulectomy for pyriform sinus fistula.

BACKGROUND: Acute suppurative thyroiditis through the congenital pyriform sinus fistula (PSF) often recurs if the fistula is not resected. Although endoscopic chemo-cauterization (ECC) to obliterate the orifice of the fistula is less invasive than open fistulectomy, it may require repeated treatments. We recently adopted an endoscopic diode laser-cauterization (ELC) system with the intention of improving treatment outcomes in PSF. Here, we describe ELC and compare the outcomes of these three modalities. METHODS: We evaluated 83 patients with PSF who underwent treatment between 2007 and 2018 a

Inhibition of laser induced rats choroidal neovascularization by intravitreous injection of sEphB4-HSA.

BACKGROUND: Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a leading cause of central vision loss complicated with age-related macular degeneration. Although intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy is widely used in wet age-related macular degeneration, optimal treatment regimens for the disease are still under investigation. EphrinB2 and EphB4 regulate angiogenesis, and interruption of EphB4/ephrinB2 has been demonstrated to inhibit angiogenesis. In the current study, we studied the effects of soluble EphB4 (sEphB4) on laser induced CNV in a rat model by intravitreous injection and the underlying mechanism. M

Probing depth reduction of laser application in periodontal therapy: a network meta-analysis.

The aim was to systematically evaluate the probing depth (PD) reduction of lasers in scaling and root planing (SRP) of chronic periodontitis by network meta-analysis (NMA). Randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) were searched through electronic-search and hand-search up to January 2020. Standard mean different (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were counted for PD reduction. The random-effects NMA were performed using mvmeta routine in STATA software (version 13). This NMA analysed seven periodontal treatments through 37 RCTs. No inconsistency was detected. Compared with mechanical S…
