Distinct osseous structural differences exist between patients with unilateral coronal synostosis and those with "deformational plagiocephaly." Patients with unilateral coronal synostosis exhibit significant anterior displacement of the infraorbital rim relative to the ipsilateral frontal bone and contralateral infraorbital rim (p less than 0.005). Patients with deformational plagiocephaly are noted to have retrusion of the frontal bone and infraorbital rim on the involved side. The purpose of this study was to examine the dental and periodontal changes associated with orthodontic space closure of edentulous maxillary first molar areas in adults. The sample consisted of 20 quadrants from 18 patients. The pretreatment and posttreatment records included study casts, lateral cephalometric radiographs, and periapical or panoramic radiographs. This article presents a method of cephalometric tracing and analysis using the basilar view cephalogram and discusses its role in diagnosis and treatment planning. Landmarks and structures found in each of three separate basilar planes are defined and instructions for tracings are presented. Three cases have been presented that demonstrate some ways in which adjacent autogenous bone can be used for grafting in orthognathic surgery. The limitations on the use of such bone are, of course, the amount and type of bone available and the imagination of the surgeon. This study examines the relationship between facial morphology and nasal respiration. Nasal resistance to expiratory airflow, average volume flow rate, and temporal characteristics of the respiratory cycle were measured for twenty-eight adults. Subjects were categorized as having (1) normal facial proportions with competent lips (n = 10), (2) normal facial proportions with incompetent lips (n = 9), and (3) long vertical face height (n = 9). An anatomic pattern of dentofacial deformity consistent with the diagnosis of vertical maxillary deficiency (short face syndrome, Type 2) was observed in a patient with cleidocranial dysplasia. Detailed description of diagnostic findings and the coordinated sequence of surgical-orthodontic care over a 16-month period of follow-up are presented. An 11 mm lengthening of facial height was obtained. Results of surgical and orthodontic stability are presented. A relationship between conditions with anodontia or pseudo-anodontia and vertical maxillary deficiency is hypothesized.
