Long-Term Sequelae of COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of One-Year Follow-Up Studies on Post-COVID Symptoms.

Emerging evidence has shown that COVID-19 survivors could suffer from persistent symptoms. However, it remains unclear whether these symptoms persist over the longer term. This study aimed to systematically synthesise evidence on post-COVID symptoms persisting for at least 12 months. We searched PubMed and Embase for papers reporting at least one-year follow-up results of COVID-19 survivors published by 6 November 2021. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted to estimate pooled prevalence of specific post-COVID symptoms. Eighteen papers that reported one-year follow-up data from 8591 COVID

Bumetanide attenuates sevoflurane-induced neuroapoptosis in the developing dentate gyrus and impaired behavior in the contextual fear discrimination learning test.

INTRODUCTION: Sevoflurane acts as a gamma-aminobutyric acid subtype A receptor agonist and can induce widespread apoptosis of immature dentate granule cells in postnatal day 21 mice. The dentate granule cells of postnatal day 21 mice undergo a developmental stage when gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) shifts from inducing the depolarization of neurons to causing hyperpolarization. However, it is unclear whether sevoflurane induces apoptosis of immature granule cells by facilitating the depolarization or hyperpolarization of neurons. METHODS: We utilized bumetanide, an Na+ -K+ -2Cl- cotransporter

Prenatal Hypoxia Induces Premature Aging Accompanied by Impaired Function of the Glutamatergic System in Rat Hippocampus.

Prenatal hypoxia is among leading causes of progressive brain pathologies in postnatal life. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of the hippocampal glutamatergic system and behavior of rats in early (2 weeks), adult (3 months) and advanced (18 months) postnatal ontogenesis after exposure to prenatal severe hypoxia (PSH, 180 Torr, 5% O2, 3 h) during the critical period in the formation of the hippocampus (days 14-16 of gestation). We have shown an age-dependent progressive decrease in the hippocampal glutamate levels, a decrease of the neuronal cell number in the CA1 hippocampal reg

Intracortical focal non-convulsive status epilepticus causing cerebral hypoxia and intracranial hypertension.

We describe the pathophysiological consequences and long-term neurological outcome of a patient with acute brain injury (ABI) in whom intracortical electroencephalography (iEEG) captured an episode of prolonged focal non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) that remained undetectable on scalp electroencephalography. A 53-year-old right-handed woman was admitted to hospital due to a large frontal left intraparenchymal hematoma. Over two and a half days, we captured recurrent non-convulsive electrographic and electroclinical seizures compatible with the diagnosis of intracortical focal NCSE. The

Relationship between 7T MR-angiography features of vascular injury and cognitive decline in young brain tumor patients treated with radiation therapy.

PURPOSE: Although radiation therapy (RT) is a common treatment for pediatric brain tumors, it is associated with detrimental long-term effects such as impaired cognition, vascular injury, and increased stroke risk. This study aimed to develop metrics that describe vascular injury and relate them to the presence of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) and cognitive performance scores. METHODS: Twenty-five young adult survivors of pediatric brain tumors treated with either whole-brain (n = 12), whole-ventricular (n = 7), or no RT (n = 6) underwent 7T MRI and neurocognitive testing. Simultaneously acquir

Adherence of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome patients to positive airway pressure therapy - 10-year follow-up.

PURPOSE: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most effective therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). Long-term adherence is necessary; however, it may be widely variable based on current literature, where the predicting factors are also not well defined. The aim of this study was to assess ten-year adherence to CPAP and to define factors influencing it. METHODS: In total, 107 patients (91 males) were enrolled in this study, with an average age of 53.5 years (SD 10.1), with CPAP therapy being indicated (Apnoea-Hypopnoea Index - AHI > 15). Anthropometric and social st

The Neuropsychological Profile of Severe and Enduring Anorexia Nervosa: A Systematic Review.

Characteristics of Severe and Enduring Anorexia Nervosa (SE-AN) are being investigated to differentiate the patients experiencing SE-AN from those at earlier stages of the AN disease. The current systematic review was the first step in exploring neuropsychological functioning as a potentially identifying characteristic for long-term presentations. With a subgroup of AN patients reflecting a unique neuropsychological profile that is proportionate to the quantity of patients that go on to develop SE-AN, it was the aim of this review to assess neuropsychological functioning in the later stage of

Exoscopic to Endoscopic Channel-Based Trans-Sulcal Resection of a Third Ventricular Cavernous Malformation: Technical Case Illustration.

Cavernous malformations are angiographically occult vascular hamartomas without intervening neural tissue that represent an estimated 10% of central nervous system vascular pathologies.1 Management is often dictated by lesion location, intranidal versus extranidal hemorrhage, presenting symptoms, acuity of onset, and surgical accessibility. Deep-seated cavernous malformations are often adjacent to eloquent structures, including functional white matter tracts that must be accounted for during surgical planning and respected during resection of the cavernoma. Exoscopic-guided channel-based appro

Very late complications of oncotherapy in glioblastoma patients: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Stroke-like syndrome is defined as a rare, delayed complication of brain oncotherapy. Cases with more favorable brain cancer diagnoses and longer life expectancy have been previously reported, but here we present, for the first time, three long-term survivors of glioblastoma with stroke-like syndromes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three young or middle-aged patients underwent tumor resection and chemoradiotherapy. They received regular clinical and imaging follow-up with stable neurological status and no signs of tumor recurrence. They exhibited varied signs and symptoms (motor and sensor

Spontaneously Resolving Joint Inflammation Is Characterised by Metabolic Agility of Fibroblast-Like Synoviocytes.

Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) play an important role in maintaining joint homeostasis and orchestrating local inflammatory processes. When activated during injury or inflammation, FLS undergo transiently increased bioenergetic and biosynthetic demand. We aimed to identify metabolic changes which occur early in inflammatory disease pathogenesis which might support sustained cellular activation in persistent inflammation. We took primary human FLS from synovial biopsies of patients with very early rheumatoid arthritis (veRA) or resolving synovitis, and compared them with uninflamed control

N, N-dimethylglycine Protects Behavioral Disturbances and Synaptic Deficits Induced by Repeated Ketamine Exposure in Mice.

Ketamine, an N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) blocker, is gaining ground as a treatment option for depression. The occurrence of persistent psychosis and cognitive impairment after repeated use of ketamine remains a concern. N, N-dimethylglycine (DMG) is a nutrient supplement and acts as an NMDAR glycine site partial agonist. The objective of this study was to assess whether DMG could potentially prevent the behavioral and synaptic deficits in mice after repeated ketamine exposure. Male ICR mice received ketamine (20 mg/kg) from postnatal day (PN) 33-46, twice daily, for 14 days. The loco

Longitudinal Characterization of the Mumps-Specific HLA-A2 Restricted T-Cell Response after Mumps Virus Infection.

Waning of the mumps virus (MuV)-specific humoral response after vaccination has been suggested as a cause for recent mumps outbreaks in vaccinated young adults, although it cannot explain all cases. Moreover, CD8+ T cells may play an important role in the response against MuV; however, little is known about the characteristics and dynamics of the MuV-specific CD8+ T-cell response after MuV infection. Here, we had the opportunity to follow the CD8+ T-cell response to three recently identified HLA-A2*02:01-restricted MuV-specific epitopes from 1.5 to 36 months post-MuV infection in five previous

Cerebral MRI findings predict the risk of cognitive impairment in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare thrombomicroangiopathy caused by deficiency of ADAMTS13. Acute neurological involvement is well described, but its long-term impact requires evaluation. One-hundred thirty-one patients, following an acute TTP event, with severe headache or neurological symptoms had a cerebral MRI. Fifty-six percent had abnormal imaging, more commonly in patients with neurological symptoms than headaches only (80% vs. 18%, P < 0·0001). In remission, 27% (n = 35) reported persistent cognitive symptoms: specifically, impaired memory (66%), difficulty concentrati

Maternal Iron Deficiency Programs Offspring Cognition and Its Relationship with Gastrointestinal Microbiota and Metabolites.

Iron is an essential micronutrient for the brain development of the fetus. Altered intestinal microbiota might affect behavior and cognition through the so-called microbiota-gut-brain axis. We used a Sprague-Dawley rat model of a maternal low-iron diet to explore the changes in cognition, dorsal hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and related pathways, gut microbiota, and related metabolites in adult male offspring. We established maternal iron-deficient rats by feeding them a low-iron diet (2.9 mg/kg), while the control rats were fed a standard diet (52.3 mg/kg). We used a Mo

DeepNerve: A New Convolutional Neural Network for the Localization and Segmentation of the Median Nerve in Ultrasound Image Sequences.

Carpal tunnel syndrome commonly occurs in individuals working in occupations that involve use of vibrating manual tools or tasks with highly repetitive and forceful manual exertion. In recent years, carpal tunnel syndrome has been evaluated by ultrasound imaging that monitors median nerve movement. Conventional image analysis methods, such as the active contour model, are typically used to expedite automatic segmentation of the median nerve, but these usually suffer from an arduous manual intervention. We propose a new convolutional neural network framework for localization and segmentation of

Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Transcription Factor Modulation.

The worldwide incidence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is ∼0.5% per year and the frequency is significantly higher among military personnel and athletes. Repetitive TBIs are associated with military and athletic activities, and typically involve more severe consequences. The majority of TBIs are mild; however, these still can result in long-term cognitive deficits, and there is currently no effective treatment. tert-Butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) and pioglitazone can activate the nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) transcr

Cognitive reserve mediates the severity of certain neuropsychological deficits related to cocaine use disorder.

The concept of cognitive reserve (CR) is being considered in the field of substance use disorder (SUD) by observing that there are individuals whose brain alterations are not related to the cognitive symptomatology they present. Our aims were to characterise the possible neuropsychological deficits in a sample of subjects with SUD compared to healthy controls and to determine whether the degree of CR is a mediator in the cognitive functioning of these patients. To perform these objectives, the study involved a sample of subjects with SUD in outpatient treatment and a healthy control group. A C

Chronic heroin use disorder and the brain: Current evidence and future implications.

The incidence of chronic heroin use disorder, including overdose deaths, has reached epidemic proportions. Here we summarise and evaluate our knowledge of the relationship between chronic heroin use disorder and the brain through a narrative review. A broad range of areas was considered including causal mechanisms, cognitive and neurological consequences of chronic heroin use and novel neuroscience-based clinical interventions. Chronic heroin use is associated with limited or very limited evidence of impairments in memory, cognitive impulsivity, non-planning impulsivity, compulsivity and decis

Effect of body-part specificity and meaning in gesture imitation in left hemisphere stroke patients.

Previous studies showed that imitation of finger and hand/arm gestures could be differentially impaired after brain damage. However, so far, the interaction between gesture meaning and body part in imitation deficits has not been fully assessed. In the present study, we aimed at filling this gap by testing 36 unilateral left brain-damaged patients with and without apraxia (20 apraxics), and 29 healthy controls on an imitation task of either finger or hand/arm meaningful (MF) gestures and meaningless (ML) movements, using a large sample of stimuli and controlling for the composition of the expe

N-Docosahexaenoylethanolamine Attenuates Neuroinflammation and Improves Hippocampal Neurogenesis in Rats with Sciatic Nerve Chronic Constriction Injury.

Chronic neuropathic pain is a condition that causes both sensory disturbances and a variety of functional disorders, indicating the involvement of various brain structures in pain pathogenesis. One of the factors underlying chronic neuropathic pain is neuroinflammation, which is accompanied by microglial activation and pro-inflammatory factor release. N-docosahexaenoylethanolamine (DHEA, synaptamide) is an endocannabinoid-like metabolite synthesized endogenously from docosahexaenoic acid. Synaptamide exhibits anti-inflammatory activity and improves neurite outgrowth, neurogenesis, and synaptog
