Total and cancer mortality after supplementation with vitamins and minerals: follow-up of the Linxian General Population Nutrition Intervention Trial.

BACKGROUND: The General Population Nutrition Intervention Trial was a randomized primary esophageal and gastric cancer prevention trial conducted from 1985 to 1991, in which 29,584 adult participants in Linxian, China, were given daily vitamin and mineral supplements. Treatment with "factor D," a combination of 50 microg selenium, 30 mg vitamin E, and 15 mg beta-carotene, led to decreased mortality from all causes, cancer overall, and gastric cancer. Here, we present 10-year follow-up after the end of active intervention. METHODS: Participants were assessed by periodic data collection, monthl

Nutritional interventions in randomised clinical trials for people with incurable solid cancer: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Malnutrition is highly prevalent in those with cancer and more so in those with incurable cancer. In incurable cancer, it is widely agreed that optimal nutritional care has the potential to positively impact patient and caregiver distress and oncological outcomes. The aim of this systematic review was to describe the diversity and frequency of nutritional interventions, whether given in isolation or as part of a multimodal intervention in those with incurable cancer, in randomised controlled trials. The secondary aims were to describe adherence and their efficacy. METHODS:

Growth, development and differentiation: a functional food science approach.

Few other aspects of food supply and metabolism are of greater biological importance than the feeding of mothers during pregnancy and lactation, and of their infants and young children. Nutritional factors during early development not only have short-term effects on growth, body composition and body functions but also exert long-term effects on health, disease and mortality risks in adulthood, as well as development of neural functions and behaviour, a phenomenon called 'metabolic programming'. The interaction of nutrients and gene expression may form the basis of many of these programming eff

Trend and factors associated with consumption of iron-rich foods among children aged 6-23 months in Ethiopia, Evidenced from 2005-2019 Ethiopia demographic and health survey: A multivariate decomposition analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Micro-nutrient deficiencies remain the major public health concern in sub-Saharan African countries including Ethiopia. In particular, adequate consumption of iron-rich foods among children aged 6-23 months in Ethiopia is very low, and is one of the reasons for the high prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies. Consumption of iron-rich food among children aged 6-23 months has changed over time in Ethiopia. However, there is scant evidence on the factors contributed for the change in the consumption of iron-rich foods. OBJECTIVE: To assess the trend and factors associated with co

The Smart Therapy Model: a Fourth Wave framework for assessment-driven, integrative multimodal biopsychosocial psychotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Despite decades of psychotherapy research yielding over 100 empirically supported treatment protocols, clinical practice continues to face persistent challenges, including high dropout rates averaging 15-20% in controlled settings and widespread treatment resistance. The central tension is the "research-practice gap": whereas research validates singular, manualized protocols, clinicians predominantly operate eclectically. Critically, the field lacks a standardized framework to guide how clinicians should select and sequence interventions-not merely which protocols exist. Emerging

Next-Generation Immune Checkpoints and Tumor Microenvironment Modulation in Cancer Immunotherapy.

Immunotherapy has reshaped the oncology landscape by enabling the immune system to recognize and eliminate malignant cells. Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) targeting cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4), programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) have achieved durable responses in several cancers, their therapeutic benefit remains limited to a subset of patients, largely due to immune evasion, tumor heterogeneity, and immunosuppressive features of the tumor microenvironment (TME). This review comprehensively examines the expanding landsca

The association between anthropometric failure and zinc deficiency among preschool-age children in rural Sidama region, Ethiopia: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition remains a significant global public health challenge, particularly affecting preschool-age children in low- and middle-income countries. Zinc, an essential micronutrient for growth and immunity, is often deficient in such settings, exacerbating undernutrition risks. Despite evidence linking zinc deficiency to poor anthropometric outcomes, findings remain inconsistent. Limited research exists on its association with combined growth failures, assessed via the Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF). In Ethiopia, where undernutrition rates are high, localized dat

Early-life infectious and nutritional exposures and cardiovascular risk in early adulthood in Uganda: protocol for a new round of data collection in the Entebbe Mother and Baby Study birth cohort at 21 years (EMaBS@21).

INTRODUCTION: Non-communicable diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), have become major contributors to morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and are projected to surpass infectious diseases as the leading cause of death among adults by 2030. Although CVDs have traditionally been associated with older age and obesity, adverse cardiovascular phenotypes are increasingly being observed in younger and leaner individuals in SSA. This pattern suggests that pathways to CVD risk in SSA may differ from those described in high-income countries. Early-life infectious exposur

Metallotoxicity-driven oxidative perturbations in spinal cord injury: Unraveling the pathophysiological nexus between metal-induced redox imbalance and disease severity: A correlational and multivariate analysis.

BACKGROUND: Secondary injury processes, especially oxidative stress and inflammation, are crucial in aggravating neuronal damage and restricting recovery in spinal cord injury (SCI), a crippling neurological disorder. Disruption of metal homeostasis may further amplify redox imbalance by impairing antioxidant defenses and promoting inflammatory pathways; however, integrated clinical evidence linking metal dyshomeostasis with oxidative, nitrosative, and inflammatory biomarkers in human SCI remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the interrelationships among trace and toxic metal levels, oxi

Association between first 2 years' feeding practices and early childhood caries: a birth cohort study in Shanghai.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have explored the relationship between early feeding practices and early childhood caries (ECC), with a focus on oral hygiene, fluoride exposure, and sugary food consumption. However, the risk factors for ECC are diverse, and limited prospective studies have comprehensively examined the impact of various early feeding behaviors on ECC risk in preschoolers, including breastfeeding patterns, timing of complementary feeding, dietary diversity, sugary food intake, and micronutrient supplementation. Further research is needed to provide evidence for effective early interv

The influence of the food environment on diet quality: Insights from an extensive household survey in Ethiopia, focusing on women of reproductive age.

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition is a significant challenge in Ethiopia, where limited dietary diversity and widespread micronutrient deficiencies affect millions, especially women of reproductive age. Although much research has explored dietary gaps and practices, the impact of the food environment (FE) on diet quality remains understudied. This study examines how FE factors influence dietary quality, using a food systems approach to inform sustainable nutrition policies. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 1,828 households was utilized to assess women's dietary quality using Poisson regression,

Vitamin C is associated with improved outcomes in patients with sepsis-induced myocardial injury: insights from the MIMIC-IV database.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C (VC) is a water-soluble, essential micronutrient with multiple important physiological functions. Numerous studies have shown that VC deficiency is closely associated with adverse clinical outcomes in critically ill patients. Due to the extreme oxidative stress and inflammatory response associated with sepsis and its complications, which lead to a rapid depletion of VC. This study aims to explore whether VC supplementation can reduce the mortality of patients with sepsis-induced myocardial injury (SIMI). METHODS: This study used the MIMIC-IV database to extract data of pa

Vitamin D supplementation may be beneficial in improving the prognosis of patients with sepsis-associated acute kidney injury in the intensive care unit: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D, an essential fat-soluble micronutrient, exerts diverse physiological effects including the regulation of calcium ion homeostasis, modulation of immune response, and enhancement of resistance against infectious pathogens. Empirical investigations have elucidated an association between inadequate levels of vitamin D and adverse clinical outcomes in critically ill cohorts, with a noteworthy prevalence of vitamin D deficiency observed among patients afflicted with acute kidney injury (AKI). In the context of this retrospective inquiry, our aim was to assess the potential cor

Fetal death: Expert consensus of the French College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Fetal death is defined as the spontaneous cessation of cardiac activity after 14 weeks gestational age (GA). Regarding prevention of fetal death in the general population, it is not recommended to counsel or prescribe rest, aspirin, vitamin A, vitamin D, or micronutrient supplementation; systematically look for nuchal cord during prenatal screening ultrasound; or perform systematic antepartum monitoring by cardiotocography for the sole purpose of reducing the risk of fetal death. It is recommended to offer vaccination against influenza in epidemic periods and against SARS-CoV-2. Regarding eval

Evidence-based labor management: postpartum care after vaginal delivery (part 6).

In the setting of postpartum care after vaginal delivery, rooming-in is associated with a higher rate of exclusive breastfeeding rate at hospital discharge, but there is insufficient evidence to support or refute rooming-in to increase breastfeeding at 6 months. Education and support for breastfeeding are valuable interventions to promote initiation of breastfeeding whether it is offered by a healthcare professional, nonhealthcare professional, or peer. The prevalence, risk factors and outcomes of anaemia in South African pregnant women: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A significant cause of morbidity and mortality during pregnancy is maternal anaemia. The causes of anaemia and the sequelae are varied, and the prevention and management are public health challenges, especially in resource-limited settings and certain geographic locations. South Africa is plagued by a quadruple burden of disease, with high maternal mortality rates affected by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, HIV, tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases. This is most prevalent in people of lower socio-economic status. Poor nutrition, chronic infections, lack of access to he
