Background/Objectives: Arboviral diseases transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, including Dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), and Chikungunya (CHIKV), represent a major public health challenge in tropical regions. Their clinical similarity complicates differential diagnosis, particularly in settings of viral co-circulation, and may lead to underdiagnosis. The objective was to detect acute dengue infection and assess serological evidence of Chikungunya and Zika virus exposure among patients with acute febrile syndrome and clinical suspicion of dengue in the department of Córdoba, Colombia. Methods: A prospe

Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBD) constitute a significant global health challenge, impacting dogs and posing zoonotic risks to humans. These diseases are transmitted through blood-feeding vectors such as ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes. This study, conducted in Cairo and Giza, Egypt, aimed to assess the prevalence, diversity, and clinical impact of CVBD in both domestic and stray dogs. Using microscopic and molecular diagnostic techniques, several pathogens were identified, including two primary zoonotic blood pathogens, Anaplasma platys and Leishmania spp., as well as other blood pathogens wi

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-transmitted parasitic disease, which is a main concern in tropical and subtropical countries. LF is the second major cause of chronic and irreversible disabilities worldwide, which include lymphoedema, hydrocele, and elephantiasis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 882 million individuals across 44 countries were reported to be at risk of acquiring LF. The nematode Wuchereria bancrofti is the predominant pathogen which causes LF, accounting for approximately 90% of filarial infections. The drugs albendazole (ALB), ivermectin

Dengue fever, one of the most widespread vector-borne diseases globally, is mainly transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes. In Cambodia, dengue has been a recurrent public health challenge, with major outbreaks occurring in 1995, 2007, 2012, and 2019. The latter epidemic severely impacted the capital, Phnom Penh, yet the spatial and temporal dynamics of the two key vector species had not been studied in this urban context. This study aimed to investigate how the distribution of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus is organized in the urban and peri-urban landscapes of Phnom Penh.

Malaria, caused by Plasmodium parasites, remains one of the most devastating infectious diseases worldwide, despite control efforts to lower morbidity and mortality. Both advanced candidate vaccines, RTS,S and R21, are subunit (SU) vaccines that target a single Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) pre-erythrocytic (PE) sporozoite (spz) surface protein known as circumsporozoite (CS). These vaccines induce humoral immunity but fail to elicit CD8 + T-cell responses sufficient for long-term protection. In contrast, whole-organism (WO) vaccines, such as Radiation Attenuated Sporozoites (RAS), achieved steril

Culex gelidus (Diptera: Culicidae), an important vector of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), contributes to human viral encephalitis in many Asian countries, including Thailand. This study represents the first investigation of the demographic patterns of Cx. gelidus populations in Thailand using cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene analysis and wing geometric morphometrics (GM). Mosquitoes were collected from 10 provinces across six regions of Thailand in 2022. Analysis of the COI sequences (n = 182) indicated high haplotype diversity (0.882) and low nucleotide diversity (0.006), wit

Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States. Bartonella constitute an additional zoonotic pathogen whose public health impact and diversity continue to emerge. Rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of these and other vector-borne pathogens remains challenging, especially for patients with persistent infections. This report describes an approach for DNA extraction and PCR testing for the detection of Bartonella spp. and Borreliella spp. from dry blood spot (DBS) specimens from human patients. The present study included extraction of DNA and PCR testin

BACKGROUND: Since 2000, Burkina Faso has experienced regular dengue cases and outbreaks, making dengue an increasingly important health concern for the country. Previous studies in Burkina Faso reported that resistance of Aedes aegypti to pyrethroid insecticides was associated with the F1534C and V1016I kdr mutations. The current study reports high resistance of Ae. aegypti populations to pyrethroid insecticides, likely supported by mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel, here evidenced by genotyping the kdr SNPs V410L, V1016I and F1534C. We also describe a new multiplex PCR-based diagn

BACKGROUND: Among the main activities of dengue and vector control recommended by the Ministry of Health of Brazil is the inspection and monitoring of properties identified as Strategic Points (SPs) and Special Buildings (SBs). SPs are properties associated to hazard, where there is a concentration of suitable egg-laying containers for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, while SBs have greater importance for human exposure to the dengue virus.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of characteristics of the urban landscape on dengue incidence. Specifically, we tested if SPs and SBs affect dengue case di

BACKGROUND: More than half of the global population is predicted to be living in areas susceptible to dengue transmission with the vast majority in Asia. Dengue fever is of public health concern, particularly in the southern region of Thailand due to favourable environmental factors for its spread. The risk of dengue infection at the population level varies in time and space among sub-populations thus, it is important to study the risk of infection considering spatio-temporal variation.
METHODS: This study presents a joint spatio-temporal epidemiological model in a Bayesian setting using Mark

Zika virus (ZIKV) is unique among mosquito-borne flaviviruses in that it is also vertically and sexually transmitted by humans. The male reproductive tract is thought to be a ZIKV reservoir; however, the reported magnitude and duration of viral persistence in male genital tissues vary widely in humans and non-human primate models. ZIKV tissue and cellular tropism and potential effects on male fertility also remain unclear. The objective of this study was to resolve these questions by analyzing archived genital tissues from 51 ZIKV-inoculated male macaques and correlating data on plasma viral k

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Dengue fever is a disease in which individuals' spatial distribution and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes breeding places are important factors for the disease dynamics. Typically urban, dengue is a problem for least developed countries due to the ineffectiveness in controlling the vector and disorderly urbanization processes. The result is a composition of urban sanitation problems and areas with high demographic densities and intense flows of people. This paper explores the spatial distribution of vector breeding places to evaluate introducing a new dengue serotype to a pop

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an emerging/re-emerging mosquito-borne pathogen responsible for explosive epidemics of febrile illness characterized by debilitating polyarthralgia and the risk of lethal infection among the most severe cases. Despite the public health risk posed by CHIKV, no vaccine is currently available. Using a site-directed hydrogen peroxide-based inactivation approach, we developed a new CHIKV vaccine, HydroVax-CHIKV. This vaccine technology was compared to other common virus inactivation approaches including β-propiolactone (BPL), formaldehyde, heat, and ultraviolet (UV) irr

Zika virus (ZIKV) is transmitted primarily through infected Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. ZIKV infection during pregnancy was linked to adverse fetal/infant outcomes, including microcephaly, brain anomalies, ocular disorders, intrauterine growth restriction, and other congenital malformations. Human anti-Zika virus immunoglobulin (ZIKV-Ig) is being developed for prophylaxis of ZIKV in at-risk populations, including women of childbearing potential and pregnant women. A phase 1 single-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted to assess the safety an

Dengue is hyperendemic in Brazil, with outbreaks affecting all regions. Previous studies identified geographical barriers to dengue transmission in Brazil, beyond which certain areas, such as South Brazil and the Amazon rainforest, were relatively protected from outbreaks. Recent data shows these barriers are being eroded. In this study, we explore the drivers of this expansion and identify the current limits to the dengue transmission zone. We used a spatio-temporal additive model to explore the associations between dengue outbreaks and temperature suitability, urbanisation, and connectivity
