Vitamin D status in patients with oral leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency has been widely evidenced to be associated with promoting cancer progression. Herein, we performed a meta-analysis and systematic review of studies assessing vitamin D status in oral leukoplakia (OLK) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS: This review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251113481) and followed PRISMA guidelines. We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science, with manual searches of reference lists through August 2025. Meta-analyses of proportion deficiency were performed using random-effects models. RESULTS: A total of seven s

The microbiome of the head and neck region.

The head and neck region is a host to a diverse and complex microbiome, comprising of very specific microbial communities across different anatomical niches such as the oral cavity, nasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx, salivary glands, and middle ear. The existence of these communities is determined by various factors such as physicochemical conditions, local environment and host genetics playing a critical role in maintaining mucosal integrity, immune modulation, colonization resistance, and thereby achieving metabolic homeostasis. As the human ages, the microbiome constantly evolves, influenced b

Electrochemotherapy as Monotherapy Provides a Novel, Organ-Sparing, Long Term Treatment Option for Control of Feline Third Eyelid Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Report of Two Cases.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common malignant eyelid tumors in cats, especially in white-haired individuals chronically exposed to sunlight. Electrochemotherapy (ECT), which combines bleomycin administration with transient membrane permeabilization through electric pulses, has demonstrated efficacy in periocular epithelial tumors. However, its use as monotherapy for third eyelid SCC has not been reported. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical outcomes, feasibility, and safety of ECT as sole treatment for third eyelid SCC in two cats. METHODS: Two client-owned c

International Consensus Recommendations of Diagnostic Criteria and Terminologies for Extranodal Extension in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma: An HN CLEAR Initiative (Update 1).

PURPOSE: Extranodal extension (ENE) increases the risk of recurrence and death in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients and is an indication for treatment escalation. Histopathology forms the mainstay of diagnosing ENE. There is substantial variation in the diagnosis of ENE and related terminology. Harmonising the diagnostic criteria for ENE was identified as a priority by the Head and Neck Consensus Language for Ease of Reproducibility (HN CLEAR) Steering Committee and its global stakeholders. METHODS: An international working group including 16 head and neck pathologists fr

Artificial Intelligence in the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prognosis of Hypopharyngeal Carcinoma: A Scoping Review.

Hypopharyngeal carcinoma (HPC) has one of the poorest prognoses among all types of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Artificial intelligence (AI) is a scientific field that is in the spotlight, especially in the last decade, and AI has also been widely used in the research field of HPC. This scoping review aimed to describe the improvement of HPC clinical cares brought by AI. Literatures utilizing AI and machine learning in HPC were searched in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science, and 116 articles from 1987 to 2024 were retrieved. After removing duplicate and irrelevant articles, 8

GenAI synthesis of histopathological images from Raman imaging for intraoperative tongue squamous cell carcinoma assessment.

The presence of a positive deep surgical margin in tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) significantly elevates the risk of local recurrence. Therefore, a prompt and precise intraoperative assessment of margin status is imperative to ensure thorough tumor resection. In this study, we integrate Raman imaging technology with an artificial intelligence (AI) generative model, proposing an innovative approach for intraoperative margin status diagnosis. This method utilizes Raman imaging to swiftly and non-invasively capture tissue Raman images, which are then transformed into hematoxylin-eosin (H&E

Adverse event profiles and management of cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (LA SCCHN) are treated with curative intent. Treatment guidelines recommend tumor resection, followed by adjuvant radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy in patients with high risk of disease recurrence, or definitive chemoradiotherapy in patients who do not undergo surgery. When indicated, concurrent cisplatin provides benefit over radiotherapy alone but is highly toxic. In this systematic literature review, we review adverse event (AE) profiles of cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy in patients with LA SCCHN and

HPV-Driven Head and Neck Cancer: The European Perspective.

Head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has long been associated with tobacco and alcohol use. In the last two decades, however, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has emerged as an important driver of these cancers, particularly in the oropharynx. The eighth edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system now defines HPV+ and HPV- OPSCC as separate entities. Although our understanding of HPV+ HNSCC continues to improve, it can be challenging to keep up to date with the growing body of evidence. In this context, the present narrative review was carried out to pr

HPV-Mediated Radiosensitivity in Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Molecular Mechanisms and Cellular Pathways.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: While the oncogenic potential of HPV has been well-established in other disease sites (e.g. cervix, vulva, anus), it is increasingly evident that a significant proportion of oropharyngeal cancer cases are related to the virus. Although considerable progress has been made in the understanding of this disease with respect to its underlying biology and clinical behavior, numerous questions persist. From a therapeutic standpoint, HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer has been shown to be more radiosensitive than HPV-negative disease. However, how HPV mediates this radiosensitivity i

Transient radiation-induced severe obstructive sleep apnea.

UNLABELLED: Radiotherapy for head and neck cancer can trigger or worsen obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) due to factors such as neurological impairment, muscle atrophy, edema, and xerostomia. We present a case in which a patient developed severe OSA 3 months after undergoing radiochemotherapy and neck dissection for squamous cell carcinoma of the right lingual tonsil with regional metastasis. Polysomnography confirmed severe OSA. Unfortunately, the patient did not adhere to the recommended treatment. The symptoms persisted for 6 months but then, unexpectedly, resolved completely. A follow-up poly

Invasive squamous cell carcinoma within a plaque of circumscribed palmar hypokeratosis.

Circumscribed palmar hypokeratosis (CPH) is a localized disorder of epidermal keratinization that is presented as a well-delimited, depressed, erythematous plaque on the palms or on the soles. It is histopathologically characterized by an abrupt thinning of the corneal epidermal layer. CPH is considered a benign condition, but a few cases with dysplastic changes/carcinoma in situ in the hypokeratotic epidermis have been described. We report hereby a case of invasive squamous cell carcinoma developed within a plaque of CPH. The pathogenesis of the malignant changes in this disorder remains to b

Oral streptococci S. anginosus and S. mitis induce distinct morphological, inflammatory, and metabolic signatures in macrophages.

Oral streptococci, key players in oral biofilm formation, are implicated in oral dysbiosis and various clinical conditions, including dental caries, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. Specifically, Streptococcus anginosus is associated with esophageal, gastric, and pharyngeal cancers, while Streptococcus mitis is linked to oral cancer. However, no study has investigated the mechanistic links between these Streptococcus species and cancer-related inflammatory responses. As an initial step, we probed the innate immune response triggered by S. anginosus and S. mitis in RAW264.7 mac

Radiation-Induced Pharyngeal Necrosis and Cervical Spine Osteoradionecrosis in Patients With Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy with or without chemotherapy is commonly used as an adjunct or alternative to surgery for treating head and neck cancer (HNC). In rare cases, radiation-induced side effects such as posterior pharyngeal wall necrosis, fistula formation, and osteoradionecrosis (ORN) can lead to dangerous complications of the cervical spine (C-spine). METHODS: We conducted a literature review on C-spine ORN in HNC, and we reported four additional cases following the treatment of oropharyngeal carcinoma. RESULTS: We identified 26 reported cases of C-spine ORN following radiation for

Development of squamous cell carcinoma at the bite sites several years following suspected cobra (Naja naja) envenomings.

INTRODUCTION: Snakebite envenoming is a multidimensional issue that causes severe functional and life-challenging consequences among rural communities in tropical countries. Current research and treatments are largely focused on the acute effects of envenomation and short-term health outcomes. The knowledge of snakebite-induced long-term consequences is highly limited. CASE SERIES: We report the development of squamous cell carcinoma at the bite site several years later in four patients who are suspected to have been bitten by cobras (Naja naja). Following bites, the victims presented typical
