Exploring barriers to PMTCT: perceptions of HIV-positive pregnant women in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Kenya is among the six high-burden HIV/AIDS countries in Africa, with approximately 1.3 million people living with HIV as of 2024. This includes an estimated 62,000 children aged 0-14 years. Mother‒child transmission (MTCT) of HIV during pregnancy, labour, delivery, or breastfeeding significantly contributes to new infections among children. In the absence of prevention interventions, MTCT rates range from 15 to 45% but can be reduced to less than 5% with antiretroviral therapy. Women in Kenya have a higher HIV prevalence rate than men do, with 5.2% for women and 4.5% for men. Geog

Lyme borreliosis risk perceptions, disease knowledge, and training among at-risk groups.

BACKGROUND: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe. Although there are indicators that disease risk is higher in the west of Ireland than other areas of Ireland, regional incidence data to confirm this, and to drive effective risk communication is sparse. Professions (e.g. farming, forestry) or recreational activities (e.g. hiking, trail running) that require spending time in tick habitats increase the risk of exposure. The present study is designed to provide baseline information on the perceptions, knowledge, and training of at-risk groups in Ireland relating t…

METHODS: In this cross-sectional mixed-methods study, an anonymous online survey was used to gather clinicians' perceptions of a wearable robotic hand orthosis for post-stroke hemiparesis. Participants were asked about their clinical experience and provided feedback on the prototype d…

Perceptions of Patient and Surgeon Marijuana Use: A Survey Study of Upper-Extremity Patients.

PURPOSE: The Drug Enforcement Agency has categorized marijuana as a schedule 1 substance. In states where marijuana is legal, health care systems and licensing boards restrict usage by health care professionals outside of work, unlike alcohol. Considering the paucity of evidence with respect to clinical efficacy and the legal ambiguity associated with marijuana, the purpose of this investigation was to quantify patient perceptions of marijuana use. We sought to evaluate patient perceptions of potential marijuana use by physicians, compared with other substances such as alcohol and nicotine. M…

Perceptions and Bias of Small Business Leaders in Employing People with Different Types of Disabilities.

PURPOSE: Despite existing employment-related legislation and governmental programs, people with disabilities continue to face significant barriers to competitive employment. These obstacles are partially due to biases among employers regarding the contributions of people with disabilities and perceptions about accommodation costs, which can affect their hiring decisions. Existing research on employment barriers and facilitators often treats people with disabilities homogenously and focuses mainly on large companies. This study helps to fill these gaps by exploring the motivations and challenge…

Community sports leaders' perceptions of the risks and benefits of gambling sponsorship in community sport.

Gambling sponsorship of professional sport, particularly relating to online wagering, has been a key focus of global regulatory reform efforts to address the normalization of gambling. In Australia, gambling companies and venues (including community clubs and hotels) also sponsor and develop relationships with community (non-professional) sports teams and clubs. In-depth interviews (n = 24) were conducted with senior leaders in community sporting organizations in Australia with an aim of understanding the factors that shape decisions about accepting or refusing gambling sponsorships and partne

Examining Whether Risk Factors Influence Student Perceptions of Campus Sexual Violence.

The present study examined university students' perceptions of a campus sexual violence scenario, and specifically determined whether the presence of known risk factors for sexual perpetration would influence their views of an individual who caused harm. Two hundred and seventy-five student participants read a vignette that either included the present or absence of the following three risk factors: Frequent alcohol use, attitudes supportive of rape, and negative peer influence. The findings indicated that the risk factors did not have a significant relationship with students' risk perceptions,…

Vested Interest Theory as a Framework for Understanding Anthropogenic Climate Change Risk Perceptions.

Climate change due to anthropogenic activities is contributing to the systematic warming of Earth. A warming planet represents an existential threat to humanity, contributing to the increased frequency and magnitude of multiple natural hazards. The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) notes that time is running out to create meaningful change to avert climate-related consequences. This research posits Vested Interest Theory (VIT) as a potentially useful framework for assessing attitudes and risk perceptions associated with anthropogenic climate change (ACC). Vested Interest Th…

Donor Perceptions and Preferences of Telemedicine and In-Person Visits for Living Kidney Donor Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Living kidney donor evaluation is a lengthy and complex process requiring in-person visits. Access to transplant centers, travel costs, lost wages, and dependent care arrangements are barriers to willing donors initiating evaluation. Telemedicine can help streamline and epedite the evaluation process. We aimed to deeply understand donor experiences and preferences using hybrid telemedicine video/in-person visits to ease access to donor evaluation or counseling. METHODS: We conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews with donors or donor candidates who completed their evaluatio
