OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical utility of CA-125 in the diagnosis of endometriosis and to compare the sensitivity of the serum and the peritoneal test as indicator of disease.
STUDY DESIGN: Peritoneal fluid was obtained at laparoscopy. The quantitative determination of CA-125 in serum and in peritoneal fluid was performed by IRMA-mat CA-125 'two-step method', a two-site immunoradiometric assay, using 35 and 60 U/ml as cutoff.
SETTING: Second Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Second University of Naples, Italy.

Thirty patients of acute or acute on chronic renal failure (ACRF) were randomly divided into two group of 15 cases each. Nineteen patients underwent laparoscopic placement of a peritoneal dialysis catheter with suture fixation into the pelvis. Operating time ranged from 20 to 60 min (median, 33), and the median postoperative stay for patients admitted solely for catheter placement was 1 day. No significant morbidity was associated with this procedure, and all but one catheter functioned well over the long term. Suture fixation of laparoscopically placed peritoneal dialysis catheters is straightforward, and may achieve better catheter function.

We evaluated growth, maturity of the skeleton and formation of skeletal deformities and epiphysiolysis of the femoral head in 22 children with end-stage renal failure undergoing haemodialysis, CAPD (continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis) and after kidney transplantation. The incidence of listeriosis is increased in immunosuppressed patients. We report a case of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis with bacteraemia caused by Listeria monocytogenes in a 47-year old woman with liver transplantation. Complete recovery was achieved after amoxicillin and amikacin therapy. High doses of corticosteroids and OKT3 monoclonal therapy may have favoured the occurrence of infection. Two cases of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma are reported. These tumors affected young women and displayed an unusual histopathologic pattern that closely simulated exuberant, ectopic decidual reaction or at least a malignant counterpart thereof. Phosphatidate (PA) is synthesized by a variety of cells in response to physiological agonists. Cytogenetic analyses were performed on dividing cells from the peritoneal effluent of 26 patients undergoing chronic peritoneal dialysis (CP … no dividing cells could be found. There were no differences in age, sex, duration of dialysis, and peritonitis incidence between patients with pathological mitoses and those without it. The question whether this unexpected finding is a consequence of immunosuppressed uremic status, dialysis procedure, or some other factor remains to be elucidated.
