National trainee-led preparation programmes for surgical training transitions: design, delivery and lessons learned.

Progression through UK surgical training involves highly competitive national selection processes, particularly at entry into Core Surgical Training (CST) and subsequent entry into higher surgical training at ST3 level. Inequities in access to preparation resources and variability in mentorship remain recognized challenges. The Association of Surgeons in Training has developed national, trainee-led initiatives to support trainees at these key transition points. Preparing for a Career in Surgery (P4CS) and Preparing for Core Surgical Training (P4CST), established 10 years ago, supports foundati

Transcultural experience of growing up in Soweto: towards a positive autoethnography.

This paper titled 'Transcultural Experience of Growing Up in Soweto: Towards a Positive Autoethnography' explores my lived experiences as a South African raised in Soweto, highlighting how cultural challenges shaped my personal growth, resilience, and professional identity. Growing up in a low-income household led by my single mother after my father's passing, have encountered numerous adversities, including food insecurity, limited family support, and disruptions in schooling. Despite these challenges, I have engaged in volunteer work and skills development opportunities, which widened my int

Accelerating Evidence-Based Practices in Acute Kidney Injury: A Consensus Statement from the XXXV ADQI Conference.

UNLABELLED: Scientific evidence regarding AKI and acute kidney care has advanced in recent years. However, a knowledge gap remains on the implementation of these evidence-based practices (EBPs) into clinical care. Implementation science (IS) is focused on ensuring that this knowledge is translated in an effective, efficient and sustainable fashion. OBJECTIVES: 1) Define the current status of IS; 2) Define a roadmap for accelerating IS with a focus on patient/care partner advocacy, digital tool application, social determinants of health, and resource-limited settings; and 3) Develop a robust a

Characterizing paraben exposure and source contributions in Korea: A personalized exposure factor-based approach (PerFactExpo).

Parabens are widely used preservatives with diverse exposure pathways across diet and personal care products (PCPs). Although a comprehensive exposure assessment is essential for effective exposure management, it remains highly challenging. Conventional exposure assessment methods that rely on representative contamination levels and standard exposure factors often produce overly conservative high-end estimates, particularly for reasonable maximum exposure (RME). To address these limitations, we developed the Personalized Exposure Factor-Based Exposure Assessment (PerFactExpo) model, which inte

Recognition and management of auditory verbal hallucinations in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are experienced by 25% of all people diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder. Since the impact of these hallucinations is often substantial, we asked ourselves how often they are discussed in clinical practice, whether they are treated, and if so, how and to what effect. METHODS: We studied the clinical files of 130 people under treatment at a specialized outpatient clinic for people with personality disorders, and compared the data on the presence and treatment of AVH to those collected in four prior scientific studies by our group.

Spiritual Care Competence in Palliative Care: A Concept Analysis.

Care is a multidimensional concept that includes spirituality as a dynamic and integrative aspect of human experience. Integrating spirituality into clinical practice enables a more comprehensive response to the full spectrum of human needs, which is why spiritual care competence emerges as an aptitude that fits the profile and skills to be developed by those working on care provision. Regrettably, not enough attention has been paid to spiritual care competence largely due to the lack of knowledge of professionals and what this entails. Therefore, this study aims to define the main attributes

Disparities in Salmonellosis Incidence for US Counties with Different Social Determinants of Health Profiles Are Also Mediated by Extreme Weather: A Counterfactual Analysis of Laboratory Enteric Disease Surveillance (LEDS) Data From 1997 through 2019.

Understanding disparities in salmonellosis burden is critical for developing effective, equitable prevention programs. Past efforts to characterize disparities were limited in scope and by the analytical methods available when the study was conducted. We aim to address this gap by identifying disparities in salmonellosis incidence between counties with different determinants of health (DOH) profiles. Using national U.S. Laboratory-based Enteric Disease Surveillance (LEDS) data for 1997-2019, age-adjusted county-level salmonellosis incidence/100,000 persons was calculated and linked to publicly

Large-scale evaluation of a computer-based learning program to increase prison staff knowledge on geriatric and end-of-life care.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to continue research and development of the ECAD-P learning system with an emphasis on developing a scalable unit for testing in a larger number of more diverse correctional settings. There are almost 2.3 million US persons incarcerated. Geriatric and end-of-life (EOL) care in corrections is not as equitable as care in the free world. Technological delivery of geriatric training to staff through computer-based learning (CBL) offers a novel approach to improve care and reduce disparities among those who are most vulnerable during confinement. DESIGN/METHOD
