To determine whether psychopathology is associated with disability as a result of underlying physical illness or whether such psychopathology antedates disability and is an independent determinant of disability, the authors conducted a nested case-control study within the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Follow-up Study in Baltimore, Maryland. From a 1981 random sample of 3,481 persons from Baltimore interviewed for psychopathology, disability, and other comorbidity, 1,920 who were alive in 1993 were traced and were reinterviewed with a similar instrument. Within the study population, 168 new case

Both physical activity and emotion produce physiological activation. The emotional component of heart rate (HR) can be estimated as the additional HR (aHR) above that predicted by O2 consumption. Our innovation was to substitute minute ventilation (V) for O2 consumption, calculating aHR from individual relations between V and HR during an exercise test. We physiologically monitored 28 flight phobics and 15 non-anxious controls while walking (leaving the hospital, entering a plane), and during a commercial flight. Raw HR did not differ between phobics and controls when leaving the hospital (118

This study investigated the long-term effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral treatments for patients with a specific type of social phobia: fear of showing bodily symptoms (blushing, sweating, or trembling). Patients were reassessed 18 months after they had finished one of the following treatments: (a) exposure in vivo followed by cognitive therapy, (b) cognitive therapy followed by exposure in vivo, or (c) a cognitive-behavioral treatment in which both strategies were integrated from the start. All patients were individually treated. Self-report assessments were held before and after treatment

Nineteen patients with panic disorder received sodium D,L-lactate (racemic) and pure sodium D-lactate infusions in a pilot study. Sodium D-lactate, which is less metabolically active than L-lactate, produced panic attacks in half the patients. D-Lactate also produced hypocapnia and alkalosis, indicating hyperventilation. These findings suggest that metabolism of lactate is not necessary for the induction of panic in susceptible patients. D-Lactate appears similar to other agents that cause panic in its capacity to stimulate respiration in the preliminary study.

The propensity to develop an anxiety disorder is thought to be determined by genetic and environmental factors. Here we investigated the relationship between a genetic predisposition to trait anxiety and experience-based learned fear in a psychopathological mouse model. Male CD-1 mice selectively bred for either high (HAB), or normal (NAB) anxiety-related behaviour on the elevated plus maze were subjected to classical fear conditioning. During conditioning both mouse lines showed increased fear responses as assessed by freezing behaviour. However, 24 h later, HAB mice displayed more pronounced

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Several studies have investigated outcomes after disc surgery. However, the occurrence of kinesiophobia has not been investigated previously in patients after disc herniation surgery. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated kinesiophobia in patients who had been treated surgically for lumbar disc herniation, and we related the results to established outcome measures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 10-34 months after surgery, questionnaires were sent to 97 patients who had undergone standardized open discectomy. Outcome measures included Tampa scale for kinesiophobia (TSK

This study tested the efficacy of a generic social skills intervention, Social Skills GRoup INtervention (S.S.GRIN), for children experiencing peer dislike, bullying, or social anxiety. Third-grade children were randomly assigned to treatment (n = 187) or no-treatment control (CO; n = 194) groups. Examination of the direction and magnitude of change in functioning revealed that S.S.GRIN increased peer liking, enhanced self-esteem and self-efficacy, and decreased social anxiety compared to controls. S.S.GRIN was equally efficacious for all subtypes of peer problems targeted. Particular benefits

Background. Social phobia has been under-recognised and under-treated in many countries. Little is known about its economic impact. This study aimed to identify the economic consequences of social phobia for individuals, health services and wider society. Methods. Secondary analysis of 1993-1994 Psychiatric Morbidity Survey data compared 63 people with social phobia and 8501 people without psychiatric morbidity. Results. People with social phobia were less likely to be in the highest socio-economic group and had lower employment rates and household income compared to those with no psychiatric

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression and anxiety, but has not been examined systematically in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between baseline BDNF level and treatment response in patients with GAD.
METHODS: Patients (N=168) were from China, met criteria for DSM-IV GAD, had a Hospital Anxiety and Depression Rating Anxiety (HADS-A) subscale score ≥10, and a Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) global functioning total score ≥12 at baseline. Study design was double-

PURPOSE: Tokophobia refers to a clinically significant fear of childbirth that affects women across the reproductive lifespan. Given its prevalence and association with adverse mental health, obstetric, and reproductive decision-making outcomes, valid and reliable measures are essential to identify women at risk of tokophobia.
METHODS: Tokophobia Severity Scale (TSS) psychometric properties were analyzed in nulliparous non-pregnant, pregnant, and women in the postpartum using data from cross-sectional and longitudinal studies conducted in four countries: Australia, Lithuania, Poland, and Port

BACKGROUND: Weight bias, often known as fat phobia or weight stigma, refers to unfavorable attitudes and stereotypes that are associated with, and applied to, larger bodies. Fat phobia can include an unreasonable and abnormal dread of being overweight or being associated with obese people. Currently, there is no validated tool available to measure fat phobia in Arabic. Measuring fat phobia in Arabic-speaking populations is crucial, because cultural attitudes toward body weight can be quite negative and discriminatory; these negative attitudes can negatively impact mental health. The current st

This study was intended to analyze the potential risk factors associated with postoperative onset of kinesiophobia in patients with lumbar disc herniation and to construct a predictive model using logistic regression and decision tree methods. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical data of 342 lumbar disc herniation patients who underwent surgical treatment between January 2021 and December 2023, grouped them according to the occurrence of postoperative kinesiophobia, applied multifactorial logistic regression to determine the main influencing factors, and constructed a prediction model wit

Identifying biomarkers predicting therapy outcomes before treatment holds great promise for advancing precision medicine. Genetic variants such as the serotonin transporter gene linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) may be associated with response to cognitive behavioral therapy in anxiety disorders, albeit results so far are controversial. Contributing to the ongoing debate, we investigated whether treatment response to a highly standardized one-session virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) was predicted by 5-HTTLPR genotype. N = 194 patients with arachnophobia (spider phobia) were genotyped

BACKGROUND: Myofascial pelvic pain (MFPP), which is identified by tender points in the pelvic floor musculature, is a prevalent source of chronic pelvic pain in women. It may lead to physical and mental exhaustion, reproductive concerns, and coping difficulties in daily life and work than the disease itself. Pain-related cognitive processes can affect pain relief and quality of life. Kinesiophobia, self-efficacy and pain catastrophizing are frequently treated as mediators between pain and its related consequences. Greater kinesiophobia and pain catastrophizing have been shown to be associated

OBJECTIVES: Anterior cruciate ligament rupture is a serious trauma with long-term consequences for the patient. Psychological and physiological factors may negatively affect patient recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), and development of kinesiophobia is possible. The aim of this study was to examine the presence of kinesiophobia and lower-leg muscle strength recovery in both sexes after ACLR.
METHODS: 140 ACLR patients agreed to participate in the study. Kinesiophobia was assessed using the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK). The Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Out

BACKGROUND: With a prevalence of 7-30%, shoulder disorders form the third largest group of musculoskeletal complaints. Their formation and development is influenced by, e.g. psychological factors. The Tampa scale for kinesiophobia (TSK) is the most common measure for quantifying fear of movement.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the reliability and validity of the German version of the TSK (TSK-GV) in a shoulder pain population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects with shoulder pain were included in a multicenter cross-sectional study. In addition to kinesiophobia, pain intensity, subjective impairmen
