From subjective to objective: A pilot study on testicular radiomics analysis as a measure of gonadal function.

BACKGROUND: The connection between testicular ultrasound (US) parameters and testicular function, including both spermato- and steroidogenesis has been largely suggested, but their predictive properties are not routinely applied. Radiomics, a new engineering approach to radiological imaging, could overcome the visual limit of the sonographer. OBJECTIVES: This study is aimed at extracting objective testicular US features, correlating with testicular function, including both spermato- and steroidogenesis, using an engineering approach, in order to overcome the operator-dependent subjectivity.

Pain management with methoxyflurane (Penthrox®) in Swedish ambulance care - An observational pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In ambulance care, patients are often classified as high-risk, particularly when they are in immediate need of pain relief. It has been shown that, after ambulance nurses administer intravenous analgesic drugs, patients delivered to the emergency department tend to complain of moderate to severe pain. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to evaluate the overall patient-perceived pain during treatment with methoxyflurane (MTX) in an ambulance-care setting. We also explored potential demographic variations. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 50 patients

DNA methylation and behavioral dysfunction in males with 47,XXY and 49,XXXXY: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Equal dosage of X-linked genes between males and females is maintained by the X-inactivation of the second X chromosome in females through epigenetic mechanisms. Boys with aneuploidy of the X chromosome exhibit a host of symptoms such as low fertility, musculoskeletal anomalies, and cognitive and behavioral deficits that are presumed to be caused by the abnormal dosage of these genes. The objective of this pilot study is to assess the relationship between CpG methylation, an epigenetic modification, at several genes on the X chromosome and behavioral dysfunction in boys with supern

Augmenting Virtual Reality Terrain Display with Smart Shoe Physical Rendering: A Pilot Study.

Haptic terrain rendering is limited in existing Virtual Reality (VR) systems. This article describes integration of the Smart Shoe (SS) for physical terrain display with the TreadPort VR system. The SS renders both gross sloped terrain and subtle sensations of stepping on small objects or uneven surfaces. The TreadPort projects terrain on the floor and the SS renders terrain that the user steps upon via motion tracking. The research is motivated towards eventually providing gait training for people with Parkinson's Disease (PD), hence this work presents a pilot study evaluating haptic terrain

Polyphosphate (PolyP) for alveolar cleft repair: study protocol for a pilot randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Bone grafting is an important surgical procedure to restore missing bone in patients with alveolar cleft lip/palate, aiming to stabilize either sides of the maxillary segments by inducing new bone formation, and in bilateral cleft cases also to stabilize the pre-maxilla. Polyphosphate (PolyP), a physiological polymer composed of orthophosphate units linked together with high-energy phosphate bonds, is a naturally existing compound in platelets which, when complexed with calcium as Ca-polyP microparticles (Ca-polyP MPs), was proven to have osteoinductive properties in preclinical stu

Early Postnatal Metabolic Profile in Neonates With Different Birth Weight Status: A Pilot Study.

Introduction: Restricted or enhanced intrauterine growth is associated with elevated risks of early and late metabolic problems in humans. Metabolomics based on amino acid and carnitine/acylcarnitine profile may have a role in fetal and early postnatal energy metabolism. In this study, the relationship between intrauterine growth status and early metabolomics profile was evaluated. Materials and Methods: A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted. Three hundred and sixty-one newborn infants were enrolled into the study, and they were grouped according to their birth weight percen

Acute Effects of the Wim Hof Breathing Method on Repeated Sprint Ability: A Pilot Study.

The Wim Hof breathing method (WHBM) combines periods of hyperventilation (HV) followed by voluntary breath-holds (BH) at low lung volume. It has been increasingly adopted by coaches and their athletes to improve performance, but there was no published research on its effects. We determined the feasibility of implementing a single WHBM session before repeated sprinting performance and evaluated any acute ergogenic effects. Fifteen amateur runners performed a single WHBM session prior to a Repeated Ability Sprint Test (RAST) in comparison to voluntary HV or spontaneous breathing (SB) (control) i

Mammography Image-Based Diagnosis of Breast Cancer Using Machine Learning: A Pilot Study.

A tumor is an abnormal tissue classified as either benign or malignant. A breast tumor is one of the most common tumors in women. Radiologists use mammograms to identify a breast tumor and classify it, which is a time-consuming process and prone to error due to the complexity of the tumor. In this study, we applied machine learning-based techniques to assist the radiologist in reading mammogram images and classifying the tumor in a very reasonable time interval. We extracted several features from the region of interest in the mammogram, which the radiologist manually annotated. These features

Allogeneic and autologous serum eye drops: a pilot double-blind randomized crossover trial.

PURPOSE: Serum eye drops (SEDs) are used to treat a variety of ocular surface defects. Serum eye drops (SEDs) are normally produced from the patient's blood. However, not all patients can donate sufficient or suitable blood, and logistics can be challenging. Allogeneic blood from voluntary blood donors does not have these disadvantages. Our aim was to evaluate whether autologous and allogeneic SEDs have comparable efficacy and tolerability. METHODS: In a prospective, double-blind crossover trial, patients with severe dry eyes were randomized to first receive autologous SEDs for one month, fol
