Living and dying with incurable cancer: a qualitative study on older patients' life values and healthcare professionals' responsivity.

BackgroundIn ageing Western societies, many older persons live with and die from cancer. Despite that present-day healthcare aims to be patient-centered, scientific literature has little knowledge to offer about how cancer and its treatment impact older persons' various outlooks on life and underlying life values. Therefore, the aims of this paper are to: 1) describe outlooks on life and life values of older people (≥ 70) living with incurable cancer; 2) elicit how healthcare professionals react and respond to these.MethodsSemi-structured qualitative interviews with 12 older persons with advan

Bone-targeted therapies in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer: evolving paradigms.

Majority of patients with metastatic castrate resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) develop bone metastases which results in significant morbidity and mortality as a result of skeletal-related events (SREs). Several bone-targeted agents are either in clinical use or in development for prevention of SREs. Bisphosphonates were the first class of drugs investigated for prevention of SREs and zoledronic acid is the only bisphosphonate that is FDA-approved for this indication. Another bone-targeted agent is denosumab which is a fully humanized monoclonal antibody that binds to the RANK-L thereby inhibi

Transcription and Translation Inhibitors in Cancer Treatment.

Transcription and translation are fundamental cellular processes that govern the protein production of cells. These processes are generally up regulated in cancer cells, to maintain the enhanced metabolism and proliferative state of these cells. As such cancerous cells can be susceptible to transcription and translation inhibitors. There are numerous druggable proteins involved in transcription and translation which make lucrative targets for cancer drug development. In addition to proteins, recent years have shown that the "undruggable" transcription factors and RNA molecules can also be targ

Proteomic analysis identifies pathways related to immune dysregulation in patients with hematologic malignancies after COVID-19 infection.

Patients with hematologic malignancies (HMs) are particularly vulnerable to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) because of underlying immune dysfunction and treatment-related immunosuppression. However, proteomic features associated with different clinical trajectories in this population remain insufficiently characterized. We performed serum proteomic analysis in 40 HM patients with COVID-19 and 15 healthy controls. Compared with controls, HM patients showed impaired immune-related responses during the acute phase of COVID-19. Acute-phase proteomic patterns differed across outcome groups; how…

Nurse-Led Interventions and Outcomes in Adult Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients: A Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is increasingly used to treat malignant and non-malignant hematologic diseases and is associated with complex physical, psychological, and informational needs. Nurses play a central role in HCT care; however, the range, characteristics, and reported outcomes of nurse-led interventions have not been comprehensively synthesized. This review aimed to identify the types and outcomes of nurse-led interventions in adult HCT recipients and highlight gaps in evidence. Methods: The review was initially registered as a systematic review and

Personalized Lifestyle Interventions for Prevention and Treatment of Obesity-Related Cancers: A Call to Action.

The increasing global burden of cancer necessitates innovative approaches to prevention and treatment. Lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and smoking significantly contribute to cancer. At the same time, current guidelines are based on a one-size-fits-all approach, which limits their effectiveness across diverse populations. Obesity is a well-documented risk factor for cancer, directly affecting 13 types of cancer. The complex interplay of genetic, metabolic, hormonal, and environmental factors in obesity's etiology highlights the need for more tailored approaches to obesity-re

Factors influencing physical activity in individuals with head and neck cancer: a scoping review.

ObjectivesHigher physical activity (PA) levels are associated with better quality of life in people with head and neck cancer (HNC). Despite this positive association, most individuals with these cancer types have a sedentary or low-activity lifestyle. Limited knowledge exists regarding the factors that influence PA in this group. Therefore, we reviewed and mapped the available literature on factors that may influence PA in people with HNC.DesignWe conducted a scoping review based on the framework of Arksey and O'Malley and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Health inequalities in cancer care: a literature review of pathways to diagnosis in the United Kingdom.

This literature review discusses current health disparities in cancer care in the United Kingdom, spanning access to services, diagnosis, and outcomes. These inequities stem from a complex interplay of factors such as health literacy, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, gender, geography, and lifestyle choices. Health literacy plays a crucial role in timely healthcare seeking and diagnosis, while cultural beliefs significantly shape perceptions and behaviours. Socioeconomic barriers often result in delayed diagnosis and inferior outcomes due to limited access to preventive measures and high-

Neuropsychiatric manifestations following chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy for cancer: a systematic review of clinical outcomes and management strategies.

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy has emerged as a transformative modality in the treatment of patients with cancer. However, it is increasingly evident that this therapeutic approach is not without its challenges. The unique nature of CAR-T cells as living drugs introduces a distinct set of side effects. As the application of CAR-T cell therapy expands to treat a broader range of diseases, it becomes increasingly important to devise effective strategies for handling the associated toxicities. Challenges in treating patients with CAR-T cells include addressing complica

Staff perspectives on the feasibility of a clinical pathway for anxiety and depression in cancer care, and mid-implementation adaptations.

BackgroundClinical pathways (CPs) are intended to standardise and improve care but do not always produce positive outcomes, possibly because they were not adapted to suit the specific context in which they were enacted. This qualitative study aimed to explore staff perspectives of implementation of a CP for routine screening, assessment, referral and management of anxiety and depression (the ADAPT CP) for patients with cancer, focussing on perceived feasibility of the CP and negotiated adaptations made during the implementation phase.MethodsThe ADAPT CP was implemented in 12 urban and regional

Magic year for multiple myeloma therapeutics: Key takeaways from the ASH 2015 annual meeting.

Despite the availability of various anticancer agents, Multiple Myeloma (MM) remains incurable in most cases, along with high relapse rate in the patients treated with these agents. The year 2015 saw major advancements in our battle against multiple myeloma. In 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved three new therapies for multiple myeloma, namely Ixazomib (an oral proteasome inhibitor), Daratumumab and Elotuzumab (monoclonal antibodies against CD38 and SLAMF7 respectively). The purpose of this review is to provide a detailed analysis of these aforementioned breakthrough th
