In addition, vertebral gliding had been analyzed. There was no difference in spontaneous posture of the cervical spine. In patients the total motility was reduced. Regarding the single segments there was less motility in C4/5, C5/6, and C6/7. The physiologic vertebral gliding was diminished in C2/3 and C5/6. The correlation between reduced moti …

Thirty-five children in whom hypothyroidism was detected at birth were studied with respect to psychomotor development. A 5 year-follow-up was obtained in a few cases. The I.Q. was established using Brunet-Lezine's test or Griffith's test after age 30 months. Global quotients where normal: 98 + 10 at 6 months, 96 + 7 at 1 year, 99 + 7 at 3 years, 97 + 7 at 4 years and 97 + 4 at 5 years. Partial development quotients were normal concerning coordination and sociability. A transitory decrease was found at 1 year concerning posture and at 2 and 3 years concerning language, both returning to normal…

In a previous study we observed an increase in urinary cyclic AMP in labile hypertension in the upright position and during isoproterenol infusion, in contrast to a decrease in control subjects. In the present study we measured the plasma level of cyclic AMP in control subjects and patients with various types of hypertension. We obtained the following results: (1) plasma cyclic AMP increases in response to upright posture in control subjects and hypertensive patients; (2) values of cyclic AMP in the recumbent and upright positions are comparable in control subjects and patients with essential …

This article examines the choices between sitting and standing in virtual reality (VR) experiences, addressing conflicts, challenges, and opportunities. It explores issues such as the risk of motion sickness in stationary users and virtual rotations, the formation of mental models, consistent authoring, affordances, and the integration of embodied interfaces for enhanced interactions. Furthermore, it delves into the significance of multisensory integration and the impact of postural mismatches on immersion and acceptance in VR. Ultimately, the article underscores the importance of aligning pos

The ligamenta flava of the thoracolumbar spine of mammals with great spinal mobility have a larger content of elastin than in animals with little spinal motion. The elastin content is also higher in the ligamenta flava of mammals with arched backs and prolonged sitting posture than in nonsitting mammals with the vertebral column in the shape of a flat bow. The ligamentum flavum appears to be important; a) in the control of intervertebra movements, b) in providing intrinsic stability to the spine in the sitting and standing postures and c) in maintaining a smooth surface in the posterior wall o…

Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893), recognized as the founder of Neurology and the first formal teacher of nervous system diseases, died on August 16, 1893, from acute pulmonary edema secondary to myocardial infarction. In his last years, there were several descriptions of his gait and posture disorders, suggesting the diagnosis of "lower-half parkinsonism" due to cerebrovascular disease.

"Drop foot" palsy attributed to the prolonged and repetitive maintenance of the crossed-leg posture has been occasionally reported. We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of magnetic resonance imaging evidence of peroneal nerve abnormalities related to right drop-foot palsy in a tall healthy subject with habit of prolonged daily leg crossing.

Pain in the neck and upper limb is common and contributes greatly to absence due to sickness. Evidence is accumulating that factors such as prolonged abnormal posture and repetition contribute to these conditions. Psychosocial factors may also play a part and the relative importance of these is not yet known. Primary and secondary prevention trials are needed.

Two further cases of familial brachial plexus syndrome related to a tomacular neuropathy are reported, adding to the ten-odd known cases of this disorder. The principal characteristics are: onset on wakening or during abnormal posture, indolence, recurrences and associated electromyographic features of diffuse neuropathy. These features differentiate this affection from familial forms of shoulder neuralgic amyotrophy.

Following a posttraumatic concussion syndrome, a 24-year-old female presented at left clavicular fracture and dislocation with a compensatory head posture thought to be due to her sternocleidomastoid muscle involvement. Further investigation disclosed the existence of a concomitant superior oblique muscle palsy seemingly also of traumatic origin. The clinical course and the constellation of her symptoms are described.

In the "flexion-adduction" sign, the arm is maintained in a posture of flexion at the elbow and adduction at the shoulder. Abduction and lateral rotation of the arm, with the elbow in extension, may result in radicular pain. These signs may be useful in the evaluation of patients with cervical root or brachial plexus lesions.

A case of unilateral pulmonary oedema following "Mandrax" overdose is presented. The pulmonary oedema is believed to result from hypoxia and increased pulmonary vascular permeability. A multi-factorial pathophysiology including patient posture, may have been responsible for the unusual unilateral distribution of the oedema. This report should serve to increase awareness of this interesting clinical entity.

The most characteristic motor feature of Parkinson's disease is bradykinesia. Other cardinal motor features of Parkinson's disease include tremor (particularly rest tremor), rigidity, and postural instability/gait changes. Additional motor features common to the disease include dystonia, postural abnormalities, speech and swallowing dysfunction, and levodopa-related dyskinesias. The pathophysiology of many of these motor features remains poorly understood. During the natural course of the disease, nonmotor features (discussed elsewhere) often precede the onset of motor features and meaningfull

The treatment of malocclusions can involve orthognathic surgery. Although orthognathic surgery is a safe surgical procedure, low incidences of many complications have been reported such as infections, hemorrhage, nerve injuries, temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), and psychological problems. There are no reports in the literature of orthognathic surgery being associated with postural disorders although the link between dental occlusion and postural disorders is highlighted in numerous recent publications. This report describes the case of a young, healthy patient who presented with sustained s

Dystonic reactions produce twisting and repetitive movements or abnormal posturing. Severe dystonic reactions have been shown to occur in concert with numerous medications. This report details the case of a patient who developed hemifacial dystonia as acute side reaction from administration of clebopride for dyspeptic prophylaxis. When the drug was immediately stopped, the dystonic posture disappeared completely within 2 weeks. The use of clebopride may be associated with not only a reversible or persistent parkinsonism syndrome but also hemifacial dystonia; therefore, attention must be drawn …

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a major cause of low back and leg pain resulting in disability in elderly patients. There is now increasing number of patients who have lumbar spinal stenosis. Symptoms in spinal stenosis are posture-dependent, because the magnitude of pressure to the nerve at the stenotic area changes by postures. Clinically, symptoms in lumbar spinal stenosis are generally elicited by standing and simple walking, but relieved by sitting. There are many treatment methods including conservative and surgical treatments for lumbar spinal stenosis. The improvement of the quality of life …

Injections of bicuculline into the medial segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) of the monkey induced dose-dependent hypokinesia with dystonic attitudes in contralateral limbs whereas muscimol injections elicited choreiform movements. Injections of the same drugs in substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) provoked severe axial postural anomalies with rotational behavior. Conversely, contralateral hypertonia after bicuculline and contralateral hypotonia after muscimol injections were observed. These data suggest that GABA inputs into GPi and SNr play different roles in terms of motor and postural

Physiologic study of the guinea pig model of endolymphatic hydrops has been used to better understand the manifestations of Meniere's disease. Quantitative vestibular function testing demonstrates some changes in the hydrops subjects, especially if an additional stress such as postural inversion is imposed. Understanding the hydrodynamic changes on the endolymphatic and perilymphatic fluids by the hydrops condition as well as postural inversion may be useful in explaining the vestibular findings. These pressure effects may alter the micromechanics of the inner ear or possibly induce a relative

We report on four patients with unilateral tremor stemming from cerebrovascular accidents. In two patients with proven lesions of the thalamus, the tremor was irregular and, in addition, there was dystonic posturing of the affected arm. Tremor and dystonic posturing had appeared after the stroke. In the other two patients tremor had occurred immediately at the onset of the stroke and lasted only a few days. The tremors were of small amplitude and high frequency, and lesions could not be found on CT or MRI in these two patients. None of our patients showed signs of the so-called rubral tremor.
