Incarceration is associated with health risks including overweight and obesity. This study explored obesity rates and weight gain in incarcerated youth by tracking weight trajectory during continuous stays in juvenile justice facilities. Among 65 youth, mean weight gain was 17.8 pounds and significant, F(2, 12) = 25.44, p = .03. Youth gained an average of 15.6 pounds (standard deviation [ SD] = 3.6) during the initial incarceration period (mean = 71 days). From the assessment to treatment period (mean = 46 days), mean weight gain was 4.1 pounds ( SD = 4.3), which also was significant, F(2, 12)

BACKGROUND: Prior research demonstrates a strong positive association between social integration (e.g., strong social ties) and individual health. However, researchers also emphasize that this correlation may vary by context and potentially reverse direction under certain conditions. PURPOSE: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 550 detained adolescents (ages 14-18 years) to explore the association between adolescents' perception of teacher connectedness and a range of health risk behaviors, such as gang membership, use of in alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, and engagement in sexual risk behaviors prior to detainment.

The present study examined empathy and hostility toward women among 32 rapists, 28 nonsex offenders, and 40 nonoffender males. Results indicated that rapists were significantly less empathic than either of the other two groups toward women who had been sexually assaulted by an unknown assailant. 32 male parolees and probationers were administered the questionnaire form of the Environmental Deprivation Scale followed by the standard oral interview for the purpose of comparing written responses with oral responses usually necessary to score the scale. Psychotropic drug use has long been associated with sudden unexplained and unexpected death in psychiatric patients despite controversies surrounding the issue. Physical restraint following violent episodes in psychiatric in-patients is also associated with neurally mediated sudden cardiac death. A case where these two mechanisms have jointly resulted in sudden death is reported. The literature on the subject is reviewed and the measures which may be useful in reducing the incidence of such deaths are discussed. The need for accurate and detailed reporting of such cases is emphasized.
