Nineteen women with acute lower abdominal pain of uncertain etiology underwent diagnostic laparoscopy during a 2-year period from August 1991 to August 1993 and were retrospectively reviewed. All patients, aged 12 to 44 years, were premenopausal. Laparoscopy provided definitive diagnosis in all 19 patients. Traditional medicine remedies are believed to provide relief from pain; nevertheless, it can be a risky procedure if these remedies are prepared inappropriately. Here, we describe a patient who suffered from a split-thickness leg burn after applying a self-inflicted mixture consisting of white vinegar and aspirin prepared for knee pain. This case report highlights a rare cause of a chemical burn that could become more common with increasing use of traditional remedies worldwide.

A 62-year-old homemaker underwent an uneventful TVT (tension-free vaginal tape) procedure. Eleven days postoperatively she presented to the Emergency Department with agonizing low abdominal pain, elbow pain, fever, and drainage from her suprapubic puncture sites. Her evaluation was consistent with a diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis and she was started on antibiotics and taken to surgery for exploration and debridement, where the diagnosis was confirmed. This is the first report of necrotizing fasciitis following TVT placement.

A conservative operation involving the excision of laminal pseudoarthroses in patients with spondylolytic spondylolisthesis who complained of referred leg pain is described. The spinous process and related ligaments of the affected lamina are preserved, allowing reattachment of the lumbodorsal fascia to the supraspinous ligaments after completion of the decompression procedures.
