Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a neuroendocrine malignancy of the thyroid C cells. Metastatic spread commonly occurs to cervical and mediastinal lymph nodes. MTC cells do not concentrate radioactive iodine and are not sensitive to hormonal manipulation. Surgery is currently the only therapy that can reliably lead to cure, reduction in tumor burden, or effective palliation. Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) or South American Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by a dimorphic fungus, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. It represents the most important systemic mycosis in South America and with higher prevalence among male inhabitants of the rural area. PCM usually affects the lungs, and rarely the intestines. BACKGROUND: Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is classified as transient or permanent. Transient CH can be treated with short-term thyroxine replacement therapy or followed up without therapy, whereas lifelong thyroxine replacement is needed in permanent CH. A 60-year-old man with a history of surgical resection of leiomyosarcoma of the right kidney had a bone scan to evaluate possible metastatic osseous disease. The bone scan showed significantly increased Tc-99m MDP activity in the right abdomen, corresponding to a heterogeneous mass in the right retroperitoneal region on the subsequent abdominal CT scan. These findings were initially interpreted as recurrent malignancy. However, the surgical pathology examination demonstrated that the lesion was retroperitoneal fibrosis, which was not previously known to have increased MDP uptake.

Retention of iodine in the thyroid gland is the result of renal excretion and transport of iodine to thyroid cells. Both processes are affected by furosemide. The aim of our study was to test whether furosemide influenced radioiodine-131 ((131)I) retention in the thyroid gland of living mice. Our methods were as follows: After 15 days of low-iodine diet, 19 Swiss mice received an intra-peritoneal injection of 0.37+/-0.03 MBq of (131)I. Thereafter, 11 mice were treated with intraperitoneal injections of furosemide (0.3 mg/kg, every 8 h, for 72 h), Group A and 8 mice served as controls, Group B.

PURPOSE: Angiomyomatous hamartoma (AH) of the lymph node is a rare vascular benign disease of unknown etiology with a predisposition for the lymph nodes of the inguinal area. Only 18 cases have been described up to now in the literature and the disorder was reported to be associated with lymphedema or swelling of the ipsilateral limb in 4 patients.
