Topography of Visual Features in the Human Ventral Visual Pathway.

Visual object recognition in humans and nonhuman primates is achieved by the ventral visual pathway (ventral occipital-temporal cortex, VOTC), which shows a well-documented object domain structure. An on-going question is what type of information is processed in the higher-order VOTC that underlies such observations, with recent evidence suggesting effects of certain visual features. Combining computational vision models, fMRI experiment using a parametric-modulation approach, and natural image statistics of common objects, we depicted the neural distribution of a comprehensive set of visual f

Resting-state fMRI in depressive and (hypo)manic mood states in bipolar disorders: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormalities in spontaneous brain activity, measured with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI), may be key biomarkers for bipolar disorders. This systematic review compares rs-fMRI findings in people experiencing a bipolar depressive or (hypo)manic episode to bipolar euthymia and/or healthy participants. METHODS: Medline, Web of Science and Embase were searched up until April 2021. Studies without control group, or including minors, neurological co-morbidities or mixed episodes, were excluded. Qualitative synthesis was used to report results and risk of bi

The brain signature of emerging reading in two contrasting languages.

Despite dissimilarities among scripts, a universal hallmark of literacy in skilled readers is the convergent brain activity for print and speech. Little is known, however, whether this differs as a function of grapheme to phoneme transparency in beginning readers. Here we compare speech and orthographic processing circuits in two contrasting languages, Polish and English, in 100 7-year-old children performing fMRI language localizer tasks. Results show limited language variation, with speech-print convergence evident mostly in left frontotemporal perisylvian regions. Correlational and intersec

Resting-state Functional Connectivity of the Right Temporoparietal Junction Relates to Belief Updating and Reorienting during Spatial Attention.

Although multiple studies characterized the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ), little is known about the link between rTPJ rsFC and cognitive functions. Given a putative involvement of rTPJ in both reorienting of attention and the updating of probabilistic beliefs, this study characterized the relationship between rsFC of rTPJ with dorsal and ventral attention systems and these two cognitive processes. Twenty-three healthy young participants performed a modified location-cueing paradigm with true and false prior information about the perc

The neural basis of rapid unfamiliar face individuation with human intracerebral recordings.

Rapid individuation of conspecifics' faces is ecologically important in the human species, whether the face belongs to a familiar or unfamiliar individual. Here we tested a large group (N = 69) of epileptic patients implanted with intracerebral electrodes throughout the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC). We used a frequency-tagging visual stimulation paradigm optimized to objectively measure face individuation with direct neural recordings. This enabled providing an extensive map of the significantly larger neural responses to upright than to inverted unfamiliar faces, i.e. reflecting vi

Classification of autism spectrum disorder based on sample entropy of spontaneous functional near infra-red spectroscopy signal.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the possibility of distinguishing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) based on the characteristic of spontaneous hemodynamic fluctuations and to explore the location of abnormality in the brain. METHODS: Using the sample entropy (SampEn) of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) from bilateral inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and temporal cortex (TC) on 25 children with ASD and 22 typical development (TD) children, the pattern of mind-wandering was assessed. With the SampEn as feature variables, a machine learning classifier was applied to mark ASD and locate the abnormal

Theta oscillations in 4-year-olds are sensitive to task engagement and task demands.

Top-down control processes are essential for guiding attention and working memory towards task-relevant information. Recently, theta oscillations were suggested as critical for these cognitive processes. Infant studies testing a mixture of bottom-up and top-down processes support adult theta findings. Yet, since infants cannot be instructed, it remains unclear to what extent theta oscillations are involved particularly in top-down control in early childhood. That is especially relevant towards school age when children need top-down control to solve the increasingly complex tasks. In this EEG s

The neural representation of mental beliefs held by two agents.

Neuroimaging research has demonstrated that mentalizing about false beliefs held by other people recruits the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ). However, earlier work was limited to a single agent that held a false belief. We investigated the effect of two agents that held similar or mixed false and/or true beliefs. Participants saw animated stories with two smurfs holding true or false beliefs (Story phase). At the end of each trial, they were requested to take the perspective of the self or one of the smurfs (Question phase). We predicted that an increasing number of smurfs holding a false bel

Alterations of resting-state functional network centrality in patients with asthma: evidence from a voxel-wise degree centrality analysis.

Several previous studies have reported that asthma patients have abnormal brain activities, whereas alterations in the resting-state network still remain unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in functional network centrality in asthma patients using voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method. Asthma patients and healthy controls (HCs) were matched closely in age, sex, and education of participants. The DC method was used to evaluate the functional network centrality. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to distinguish the asthma group from the HCs group. T

Inter-subject correlation of temporoparietal junction activity is associated with conflict patterns during flexible decision-making.

Although behavioral flexibility and conflict regulation may rely on executive function, the mechanism underlying these relationships remains obscure. We studied whether subjects' conflict ratings were associated with right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) and temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) activity during flexible decision-making in a moral dilemma task using inter-subject correlation (ISC)-based approach (i.e., brain-behavior correlation matrices analysis). We observed a statistically significant positive correlation between the ISC matrix of rTPJ and conflict-scores. This implies tha

Distinctive epileptogenic networks for parietal operculum seizures.

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the electroclinical features and epileptogenic networks of parietal operculum seizures (POS) by using stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) intracerebral recordings. METHODS: Comprehensive presurgical evaluation data of seven patients with drug-resistant epilepsy with POS were analyzed retrospectively. Stereoelectroencephalography-recorded seizures were processed visually and quantitatively by using epileptogenicity mapping (EM), which has been proposed to ergonomically quantify the epileptogenicity of brain structures with a neuroimaging approach. Clinicopathological and molecular analysis of multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumors of the cerebrum.

Multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor (MVNT) of the cerebrum is a recently recognized rare neuronal tumor, and its pathogenesis is unclear. We analyzed 7 cases of histologically typical MVNT: 6 were adults (mean age, 43.0 years [range, 23-56 years]) and 1 was a child (age, 10 years). The most common symptoms were seizures (n = 4) and headache (n = 2). The tumors were supratentorial (temporal, 5; frontal lobes, 2) in origin as reported. Vacuolated tumor cells were robustly positive for α-INA and Olig2 and at least partly positive for synaptophysin and MAP2, but negative for Neu-N, nestin

Electric stimulation of the right temporo-parietal junction induces a task-specific effect in deceptive behaviors.

How the brain generates a lie is an important and unsolved issue in neuroscience. Previous studies indicated that mentalizing, the ability to understand and manipulate the mental states of others, plays a critical role in successful deception. Accordingly, recent neuroimaging studies reported deception-related activity in the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ), a brain region closely related to the mentalizing ability. Detailed functions of rTPJ in deception, however, remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated a causal relationship between rTPJ and deception using transcranial d

Information flow between interacting human brains: Identification, validation, and relationship to social expertise.

Social interactions are fundamental for human behavior, but the quantification of their neural underpinnings remains challenging. Here, we used hyperscanning functional MRI (fMRI) to study information flow between brains of human dyads during real-time social interaction in a joint attention paradigm. In a hardware setup enabling immersive audiovisual interaction of subjects in linked fMRI scanners, we characterize cross-brain connectivity components that are unique to interacting individuals, identifying information flow between the sender's and receiver's temporoparietal junction. We replica

Better you lose than I do: neural networks involved in winning and losing in a real time strictly competitive game.

Many situations in daily life require competing with others for the same goal. In this case, the joy of winning is tied to the fact that the rival suffers. In this fMRI study participants played a competitive game against another player, in which every trial had opposite consequences for the two players (i.e., if one player won, the other lost, or vice versa). Our main aim was to disentangle brain activation for two different types of winning. Participants could either win a trial in a way that it increased their payoff; or they could win a trial in a way that it incurred a monetary loss to th

The Core Brain Region for Face Processing in Schizophrenia Lacks Face Selectivity.

BACKGROUND: Face perception impairment in schizophrenia has long been recognized. However, brain mechanisms underlying this socially important perceptual deficit are not well understood. Previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have shown that patients have altered structure in brain regions responsible for processing face information, but functional properties of these brain regions are not clearly determined. A key functional property of the face-processing system--face selectivity--has yet to be evaluated in schizophrenia. METHODS: We used functional MRI (fMRI) to examine face sel

Combined TMS and FMRI reveal dissociable cortical pathways for dynamic and static face perception.

Faces contain structural information, for identifying individuals, as well as changeable information, which can convey emotion and direct attention. Neuroimaging studies reveal brain regions that exhibit preferential responses to invariant [1, 2] or changeable [3-5] facial aspects but the functional connections between these regions are unknown. We addressed this issue by causally disrupting two face-selective regions with thetaburst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TBS) and measuring the effects of this disruption in local and remote face-selective regions with functional magnetic resonance
