Factors Contributing to the Development of Neuropsychiatric Manifestations in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic demyelinating disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS) and is distinguished by neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. It has four categories based on clinical course, with relapsing-remitting being the most common type. MS predominantly manifests with motor and sensory dysfunctions. However, neuropsychiatric manifestations such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder are not uncommon. Various factors may contribute to the development of these manifestations; therefore, this study aimed to unravel them. This syst

Overcoming social appearance anxiety among children affected by congenital physical differences.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: How can we effectively help children with congenital physical differences and their parents in adapting to their situation and overcome social appearance anxiety? How can we improve their self-efficacy in social situations and relationships, as well as increase their self-esteem and self-confidence, which are foundations of assertiveness? RECENT FINDINGS: Several studies have examined the coping skills variability between children. Researchers have attempted to identify the discriminating factors of these differences. Standardized programmes combining Cognitive Behavioural

Rebound Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia in Type 1 Diabetes.

AIMS: The aim was to investigate rebound hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic events, and describe their relation to other glycemic metrics. METHODS: Data from intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring were downloaded for 90 days for 159 persons with type 1 diabetes. A hypoglycemic event was defined as glucose <3.9 mmol/l for at least two 15-minute periods. Rebound hypoglycemia (Rhypo) was a hypoglycemic event preceded by glucose >10.0 mmol/l within 120 minutes and rebound hyperglycemia (Rhyper) was hypoglycemia followed by glucose >10.0 mmol/l within 120 minutes. RESULTS: A total of 10

How do smoking, vaping, and nicotine affect people with epilepsy and seizures? A scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a prevalent disease that requires personalized care to control seizures, reduce side effects, and ameliorate the burden of comorbidities. Smoking is a major cause of preventable death and disease. There is evidence that patients with epilepsy smoke at high rates and that smoking may increase seizure frequency. However, there is a lack systematically synthesized evidence on the interactions between epilepsy and seizures and smoking, tobacco use, vaping, and smoking cessation. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review protocol guided by the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual

Free-Circulating Nucleic Acids as Biomarkers in Patients After Solid Organ Transplantation.

A number types of extracellular DNA (eg, cell-free, cfDNA) circulate in human blood, including mitochondrial, transcriptome, and regulatory DNA, usually at low concentrations. Larger amounts of cfDNA appear in any inflammatory condition, including organ damage due to a variety of reasons. The role of cfDNA in solid organ transplantation is discussed in this review as a valuable additional tool in the standard of care of transplant patients. Post-transplant monitoring requires the use of high-quality biomarkers for early detection of graft damage or rejection to be able to apply early therapeut

The Association of Metformin, Other Antidiabetic Medications and Statins on the Prognosis of Rectal Cancer in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Metformin and statin use have been associated with an improved prognosis for colorectal cancer in persons with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Data regarding rectal cancer (RC) have been inconclusive; therefore, we investigated the issue with high-quality data and a robust study design. We identified 1271 eligible patients with T2D and incident RC between 1998 and 2011 from the Diabetes in Finland (FinDM) database. Cox models were fitted for cause-specific mortality rates to obtain adjusted estimates of the hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) in relation to use of antidiabetic medicat

The eight-week concurrent training effect on functional capacity in person living with unilateral transtibial amputation: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The main causes of amputation include vascular diseases, trauma, cancer, and congenital limb abnormalities. The person with transtibial amputation (TA) is affected by a greater cardiorespiratory, metabolic, and muscular load to walk and perform daily activities. The sedentary lifestyle contributes to the process of chronic non-communicable diseases. The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of eight-week concurrent training (CT) for dependent variables as muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness, agility, and postural balance in persons with unilateral TA. METHODS: A

Pathways of follow-up care in an Italian center: retrospective study on patients with gliomas II and III.

INTRODUCTION: Glioma is the most common primary brain cancer in adults. Long-term and progression-free survivals are dependent on the type and grade of glioma, as well as on the extent of resection and postoperative treatments. In Italy, it is unclear how long follow-up care should last and whether the primary care sector is either willing or able to take this on. The aim is to determine pathways of follow-up care and evaluate the professional attitude of doctors to prescribe to patient visits and exams after surgery. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on patients with glioma II and

Performance Improvement in Brain Tumor Detection in MRI Images Using a Combination of Evolutionary Algorithms and Active Contour Method.

The process of treating brain cancer depends on the experience and knowledge of the physician, which may be associated with eye errors or may vary from person to person. For this reason, it is important to utilize an automatic tumor detection algorithm to assist radiologists and physicians for brain tumor diagnosis. The aim of the present study is to automatically detect the location of the tumor in a brain MRI image with high accuracy. For this end, in the proposed algorithm, first, the skull is separated from the brain using morphological operators. The image is then segmented by six evoluti

The Socioeconomic Burden of Acquired Brain Injury among the Korean Patients over 20 Years of Age in 2015-2017: a Prevalence-Based Approach.

Acquired brain injury (ABI) is a leading cause of serious long-term disability resulting in substantial economic costs for post-ABI care. This study was conducted to estimate the socioeconomic burden of persons with ABI in Korea. We used a prevalence-based approach and societal perspective to estimate the direct medical, non-medical costs and indirect costs of ABI, including stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and non-traumatic ABI (anoxia, brain tumor, encephalitis, meningitis, hydrocephalus, and other brain disorders) from 2015 to 2017. The study population included patients with ABI over

Chondrocyte-laden GelMA hydrogel combined with 3D printed PLA scaffolds for auricle regeneration.

The current gold standard for auricular reconstruction after microtia or ear trauma is the autologous cartilage graft with an autologous skin flap overlay. Harvesting autologous cartilage requires an additional surgery that may result in donor area complications. In addition, autologous cartilage is limited and the auricular reconstruction requires complex sculpting, which requires excellent clinical skill and is very time consuming. This work explores the use of 3D printing technology to fabricate bioactive artificial auricular cartilage using chondrocyte-laden gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) an
