BACKGROUND: There are no data in the literature on pressure changes in the prostatic urethra during ejaculation. In healthy men, it has always been postulated that there must be a pressure gradient in order to prevent retrograde ejaculation, but scientific proof for that is pending.

Currently, all alloplastic materials placed within the urinary tract are susceptible to encrustation, and devices made from these biomaterials are prone to the associated complications. Encrustation is affected by such surface properties as roughness and irregularity, hydrophobicity and wetability, charge, polymer chemistry, and coatings. The composition of the surface may also influence reactivity at the interface. A raised urinary pH as a result of infection with urease-producing bacteria is an important mechanism of encrustation, but encrustation can take place in the absence of infection.

In patients with a suprapubic catheter, the differential diagnosis of acute lower abdominal pain must include a possible dislocation of this device. We report a case that illustrates such a complication, leading to bowel obstruction in our patient.

Partial ureteral duplication in an inverted Y is evidenced by the presence of a ureter duplicated at a variable level before reaching the bladder, in either an orthotopic or an ectopic position. A case of ureteral duplication at the level of the renal hilum with opening of a ureter at the level of the epididymis is reported. The description of this original case is compared with the data in the literature. The stages of organogenesis of the superior excretory pathway leading to ureteral ectopia and ureteral anomalies of number are reviewed.

Transurethral needle ablation (TUNA) was performed on seven patients with chronic nonbacterial prostatitis who failed to respond to conventional treatments administered for more than half a year. The TUNA procedure heated the prostate to a temperature ranging from 90 degrees to 100 degrees C while the urethral temperature was maintained below 43 degrees C by a protective sheath and irrigation. Three male spinal cord injured patients who underwent suprapubic catheterisation with urethral closure are reported. Although the procedure is well established in women, and has been mainly used in patients with multiple sclerosis, this simple procedure is also possible in men, and worth considering in difficult situations where continence has been impossible to achieve by more conventional means.

OBJECTIVES: We describe a new stent made from shape memory alloy (SMA) first developed by our collaborative group, its structure, and a simple and easy procedure for its placement and removal without the need for a monitoring system or sedation.
METHODS: The stent made of SMA was placed in 5 dogs for 10 months. It was left in situ in the shape of thermal expansion while the obturator Foley catheter was removed.

An endoscopic technique to remove ureteral stents in children is described. The technique is simple and reproducible. A snare or lasso is created by looping a polypropylene suture through a ureteral catheter. The snare is advanced under vision through the working channel of a pediatric cystoscope. The loop of the suture is placed over the intravesical portion of the indwelling ureteral stent. It is tied to create a noose, thus securing the stent. The stent can then be removed easily.
