Regional cortical thickness was evaluated using CIVET processing of 3D T1-weighted images (i) to compare the variation in cortical thickness between 33 participants with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) aged 6-30 years (mean age 12.3 years) versus 33 age/sex/hand-matched controls, and (ii) to examine developmental changes in cortical thickness with age from children to young adults in both groups. Significant cortical thinning was found in the participants with FASD in large areas of the bilateral middle frontal lobe, pre- and post- central areas, lateral and inferior temporal and occip

Chronic alcohol abuse leads to malnutrition, and thus to the deficiency of many nutrients, including vitamins and trace elements. Most often … dy excretion, mainly via urine. The decreased concentration of serum folic acid may occur in 80% of alcoholics. The cause of elevated concentrations of homocysteine in the serum of alcohol abusers is also a deficiency of vitamins involved such as vitamin B12 and pyridoxal phosphate. Disturbance of folic acid and homocysteine metabolism in alcohol abusers can …

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most common liver disease in Western countries. The more severe form of this condition, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), may progress to cirrhosis and its complications. Fibrosis and cirrhosis are the final outcomes of all chronic liver diseases; however, some morphological and biological differences distinguish fibrosis due to NASH from the forms secondary to other causes of liver damage. Fibrosis due to NASH develops primarily in the pericentral areas, surrounding groups of hepatocytes and thickening the space of Disse. This peric

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is increasingly recognised as a condition associated with overweight or obesity that may progress to end-stage liver disease. NAFLD histology resembles alcohol-induced liver injury, but occurs in patients with no history of alcohol abuse. NAFLD has a broad spectrum of clinical and histological manifestations, ranging from simple fatty liver to hepatic steatosis with inflammation, advanced fibrosis, and cirrhosis. The inflammatory stage is known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Recent reports indicate that weight loss induced by baria

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Although abnormal hepatic methionine metabolism plays a central role in the pathogenesis of experimental alcoholic liver disease (ALD), its relationship to the risk and severity of clinical ALD is not known. The aim of this clinical study was to determine the relationship between serum levels of methionine metabolites in chronic alcoholics and the risk and pathological severity of ALD.
METHODS: Serum levels of liver function biochemical markers, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate, homocysteine, methionine, S-adenosylmethionine, S-adenosylhomocysteine, cystathionine, cysteine, …

The study was undertaken to examine of influence of alcohol containing products of household chemistry on serum lipid spectrum. The research has shown, that alcohol containing products of household chemistry at the patients with Toxic hepatitis in comparison with the persons using ethyl alcohol was revealed in lower relative contents of total phospholipids, Free fatty acids, cholesterol ethers, total lysophospholipids, sphyngomyelin and higher level of free cholesterol and phosphatidylcholine. The level of total lipids at the patients with Toxic hepatitis was in 3 times higher than normal.

BACKGROUND: To identify opportunities for targeted prevention, we explored differences in occupational mortality from diseases and injuries related to alcohol consumption, sexual habits and drug abuse.
METHODS: Using data on all deaths among men and women aged 16-74 years in England and Wales during 1991-2000, we derived age- and social class-standardized proportional mortality ratios (PMRs) by occupation for cause of death categories defined a priori as potentially related to alcohol consumption, sexual habits or drug abuse.
RESULTS: The highest mortality from alcohol-related diseases and i

Although most patients with alcoholic liver disease experience positive outcomes following liver transplantation, data on the outcome after liver transplantation in patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis are limited. Furthermore, predicting which patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis will maintain sobriety after transplantation is especially difficult. We review the arguments in favour and against extending liver transplantation to selected patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis. In conclusion, we propose that liver transplantation should be a rescue option for occasional patients with

Alcohol dependence represents a chronic, relapsing condition with a multifactorial aetiology that includes genetic, neurobiological, psychological, and environmental components. Evidence for the effectiveness of medications in alcohol dependence treatment along with the increased number of compounds available is increasing the use of adjunctive pharmacotherapies. In particular, pharmacotherapies could conceivably address some of the biological aspects of alcohol dependence. Treating a complex behavioral disorder such as alcohol dependence with both pharmacotherapy and psychosocial therapy may g

The lack of satisfactory results of alcohol dependence treatment has necessitated the search for new directions of studies. One of them is connected with glutamatergic transmission. The influence of alcohol on this transmission is very complex and relates to changes including at the molecular level. However, the diversity of glutamatergic receptors creates a new possibility of modulation of its activity. It leads to decrease of alcohol reward abilities, prolongs abstinence time and reduces the incidence of acute alcohol intoxication in alcohol addicts. The use of acamprosate--a glutamatergic t

BACKGROUND: The effect of posttreatment alcohol consumption on health-related quality of life (QOL) and factors predicting overall QOL and continued alcohol consumption were examined in patients with head and neck cancer.
METHODS: Self-reported alcohol use and abuse 1 year after diagnosis was analyzed.
RESULTS: Although current drinkers (44.5% of 283 patients) had better overall QOL and fewer depressive symptoms, current social drinkers had the best scores, whereas current problem drinkers had the worst. Female sex, fewer depressive symptoms, less pain, and better eating function predicted b

Social anxiety evidences significant comorbidity with alcohol use disorders and alcohol-related problems. In an effort to better understand this co-occurrence, researchers are beginning to evaluate specific drinking-related factors, including alcohol use motives, among socially anxious individuals. Drawing on Cooper's (1994) 4-factor model of drinking motives (enhancement, social, conformity, coping), a growing body of work suggests that socially anxious individuals may consume alcohol in an effort to cope with their anxious symptoms; however, no study to date has examined these relations amon
