INTRODUCTION: Oral cavity drug and vaccine delivery has the potential for local targeting, dose reduction, minimization of systemic side effects, and generation of mucosal immunity. To overcome current limitations of delivery into the oral cavity mucosa, microneedles (MNs) have emerged as a promising technology.

We report a case of junctional rhythm that occurred both preoperatively and later during a portion of general anesthesia. A 19-year-old woman was scheduled to undergo bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy after being diagnosed with a jaw deformity. RATIONALE: Levator resection has become a routine procedure for patients with severe Marcus Gunn jaw-winking synkinesis (MGJWS). To optimize the surgical outcome, adult patients need to be kept awake, or easily aroused and responsive to verbal commands during the operation. Canine trachealis smooth muscle shortening (TMS) in response to vagal nerve stimulation is approximately 30%, far less than the 70% predicted from in vitro studies. We hypothesized that in vivo airway smooth muscle activation during vagal stimulation may be submaximal, and in this study we wished to determine TMS during maximal activation. TMS was studied in 12 alpha-chloralose-anesthetized dogs during vagal stimulation, systemic acetylcholine injection, and local acetylcholine injection. Bilateral vagal stimulation produced TMS of 26 +/- 5% (SE) length at functional residual capacity (LFRC).
