The role of rumination and racing thoughts in co-occurrence of ADHD symptoms, depression and anxiety symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Higher rates of comorbidity for depressive disorders and anxiety disorders have been observed in adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which result in a significantly poorer prognosis. Developing an understanding of why this comorbidity occurs may help identify modifiable factors and inform treatment approaches. However, there is limited research examining the mechanisms through which these symptoms co-occur. This study evaluated whether racing thoughts and rumination (which have been observed in adults with ADHD, depression and anxiety) mediate the relationsh

Validity and reliability of the Japanese version of the Child and Adolescent Behavior Inventory: Parent version.

AIM: We developed a Japanese version of the Child and Adolescent Behavior Inventory (CABI) and evaluated its validity and reliability. METHODS: A total of 2433 parents and 108 students in grades 4 and above participated in this study. First, we assessed the agreement between the parents' evaluations of internalizing disorders (anxiety and depression modules) and their children's self-reports. The criterion-related validity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-inattention, ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity, and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) modules was also evaluated. Clinical, imaging, lesion, and genetic approaches toward a model of cognitive control.

The ability to suppress or override competing attentional and behavioral responses is a key component of cognitive processes. This ability continues to develop throughout childhood and appears to be disrupted in a number of childhood disorders (e.g., attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and Tourette syndrome). At least two brain regions have been implicated repeatedly in these disorders--the frontal lobes and the basal ganglia. The common problem in cognitive control and overlap in implicated brain regions across disorders suggest a single underlying biological mechanism. At the same time,

Intraindividual variability (IIV) in an animal model of ADHD - the Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by numerous behaviors including inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. ADHD-affected individuals also have high intra-individual variability (IIV) in reaction time. The genetic control of IIV is not well understood. The single study of the genetics of this phenomenon in humans detected only marginal associations between genotypes at two candidate genes for ADHD and variability in response time. The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat (SHR/NCrl) is an animal model of ADHD, expressing high activity, inattention and impulsive beha

Rasch analysis of inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive behaviour in young children and the link with academic achievement.

The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) criteria from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders were used to assess a large sample of children at the end of their first year at school in England. These data were explored using Rasch measurement and the measures for the items together with their frequencies are reported. The data were further analysed in three ways: a) The results were compared with a previous similar analysis of college students. b) A principal components analysis of the item residuals from the Rasch analysis was c

Dopamine, serotonin and impulsivity.

Impulsive people have a strong urge to act without thinking. It is sometimes regarded as a positive trait but rash impulsiveness is also widely present in clinical disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), drug dependence, mania, and antisocial behaviour. Contemporary research has begun to make major inroads into unravelling the brain mechanisms underlying impulsive behaviour with a prominent focus on the limbic cortico-striatal systems. With this progress has come the understanding that impulsivity is a multi-faceted behavioural trait involving neurally and psychologi

Subclinical orthostatic pulse pressure confirms mothers' ratings of ADHD in preschoolers.

Subclinical levels of orthostatic hypotension (OH) have been linked to a variety of emotional and behavioral outcomes across the life span. These connections are not surprising, given the multitude of correlated conditions, including autonomic control, cardiovascular functioning, baroreceptor activity, and dopamine and serotonin. The current study assessed blood pressure regulation in healthy preschool children ages 3-5 (n = 61). The Conner's Parent Rating Scale Revised was used to assess indexes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). With the difference between standing and supin

[Spectrum of neuropsychiatric features associated with velocardiofacial syndrome (Deletion 22q11.2)].

Microdeletion 22q11.2 (22q11DS) is the most frequent chromosomal deletion known in man. Velocardiofacial syndrome is one of numerous clinical syndromes that can be attributed to this micro deletion. There is an increasing recognition of associations with neuropsychiatric disorders. Particularly, schizophrenic psychosis, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual impairment and learning disabilities, seizures and motoric abnormalities have been identified in patients with 22q11DS. Recent studies supported the association of schizophrenia and 22q11DS, but the pathogenetic impl

Association of educational attainment with mental disorders and the mediation role of lifestyle factors: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Educational attainment (EA) was associated with lifestyle behaviors and underlying mental disorders. However, the causality remained poorly understood. This study aimed to elucidate the causal association between EA and mental disorders while exploring the mediation role of lifestyle factors. METHODS: A two-step Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to evaluate the mediation role of lifestyle factors in the relationship between EA and mental disorders. The total effects of years of education (EduYears) and college completion (College) on 31 lifestyle factors and 7 me

Sensory processing subtypes relate to distinct emotional and behavioral phenotypes in a mixed neurodevelopmental cohort.

Children with autism and other neurodevelopmental concerns (NDC) frequently exhibit an array of sensory processing dysfunction phenotypes, posing a significant challenge their adaptive development. Additionally, these children often encounter difficulties with self-regulation, including emotion dysregulation, anxiety, and symptoms associated with attention and hyperactivity. However, further research is required to comprehend how patterns of sensory processing differences across neurodevelopmental conditions may contribute to regulatory control problems. Adopting a transdiagnostic perspective

Addressing co-occurring conditions in behavioural therapy for tic disorders: a review and guideline.

Co-occurring psychiatric conditions are very common in tic disorders and Tourette syndrome. These additional symptoms are often detrimental to quality of life and may impact upon the implementation and efficacy of evidence-based behavioural therapies (BT) for tics. Combining a review of the available literature, relevant theory, and expert clinical practice, we present a guideline for implementing behavioural and psychosocial interventions when common comorbidities are present. These include attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, disrupti

An update on pharmacotherapy for autism spectrum disorder in children and adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although there is no known efficacious pharmacotherapy for core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), psychotropic medications are commonly prescribed for behavioral/emotional symptoms associated with ASD. We reviewed current evidence-based pharmacotherapy options and updates from recent noteworthy studies. RECENT FINDINGS: Atypical antipsychotics, particularly risperidone and aripiprazole, are effective in reducing irritability, stereotypy and hyperactivity. Metabolic adverse events, including weight gain and dyslipidemia, are common. Methylphenidate is effective in

Interhemispheric transfer in children with early-treated phenylketonuria.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a genetic disorder of amino acid metabolism that is associated with brain catecholamine depletion and deficient myelination. Although neuropsychological deficits have been documented in children with early-treated PKU (ETPKU), no study to date has examined possible effects of impaired myelination in this population. In the present study, interhemispheric transfer time was assessed for 14 children with ETPKU, 22 children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, and 48 normal children, using a manual reaction time paradigm previously validated with callosal agenesi

Guanfacine in children with autism and/or intellectual disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects 3%-5% of typical school-age children. However, considerably higher rates of ADHD (15%-25%) are observed in children with intellectual disability and autism. Studies of psychostimulants in the latter two populations have found poorer response rates compared to typically developing children. In addition, evidence suggests that children with developmental disabilities experience higher rates of adverse events. Guanfacine, an alpha2-adrenergic receptor agonist, has shown some promise as an alternative to psychostimulants. METHODS:

Dopaminergic therapy in children with restless legs/periodic limb movements in sleep and ADHD. Dopaminergic Therapy Study Group.

The long-term effects of monotherapy with levodopa or the dopamine agonist pergolide on the motor/sensory, behavioral, and cognitive variables in seven children with restless legs syndrome/periodic limb movements in sleep (RLS/PLMS) and attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were investigated. Five of the seven children had previously been treated with stimulants that had either been determined to be ineffective or to have intolerable side effects. Dopaminergic therapy improved the symptoms of RLS and reduced the number of PLMS per hour of sleep (P = 0.018) and associated arousals (P

Genetic Variants Linked to Dyslexia Co-Morbid ADHD: A Case Study of a Pakistani Outpatient.

Developmental Dyslexia (DD) and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental disorders that often coexist and share complex genetic underpinnings. Our case study integrates psychological assessments and whole exome sequencing to explore the genetic basis of DD and ADHD co-occurrence in a single proband (a nine-year-old female born to healthy) from a consanguineous Pakistani family. We present a proband with symptoms of impulsivity, inattention, and severe hyperactive behavior, along with speech impairment and moderate learning disabilities. The study identified non-sy

Executive functions, effortful control, and emotional lability in adults with ADHD. implications for functional outcomes.

Adults with diagnosis of childhood attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience impairments in self-regulation (SR). This study examined whether subgroups of these impairments can be established based on differentiable patterns. The relationships between these subgroups and a group without ADHD were then analyzed, focusing on functional outcomes. Executive functions, effortful control, and emotional lability, in addition to self-concept, quality of life, and different comorbidities, were evaluated in 61 adults with a childhood diagnosis of ADHD and 54 adults without ADHD. Evaluating the causal connections between sleep duration and disease prevalence: A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of Mendelian randomization studies.

BACKGROUND: The causal link between sleep duration and diverse health conditions remains unconfirmed. This meta-analysis aimed to clarify these relationships by synthesizing Mendelian randomization (MR) study evidence. METHODS: PubMed was systematically searched up to February 15, 2024, for MR studies exploring genetic predispositions to sleep duration/insomnia (short/long/overall sleep duration, insomnia) and associations with circulatory, digestive, neurodegenerative, metabolic diseases, and cancers. Eligible effect estimates were meta-analyzed. RESULTS: Fifty-one MR studies were included.
