Four girls and one boy with pervasive developmental disorders are described. They all met DSM-III-R criteria for autistic disorder and all also showed many if not all the symptoms currently considered essential for a diagnosis of Rett syndrome. It is concluded that there is considerable overlap between the two disorders and that the symptomatic similarities might mirror common pathophysiological abnormalities at the brainstem level.

In order to determine if there is a relation between auditory threshold and oxygen availability, cats were anesthetized, paralyzed and ventilated with room air and with hypoxic gas mixtures. Auditory nerve-brain stem evoked response (ABR) thresholds and arterial blood oxygen levels [partial pressures (PaO2) and percent saturation (SaO2)] were determined. The ABR threshold was unchanged as long as PaO2 was above 30 mm Hg (SaO2 greater than 45%). Below PaO2 20 mmHg (SaO2 less than 25%) the animal was not viable. Between these values, the hypoxia caused ABR threshold elevations which were reversi…

Two cases of rapidly fatal Listeria rhombencephalitis with normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings occurred in previously healthy adults. The infection presented with nausea and headache followed by fever and signs of lower cranial nerve dysfunction, without associated meningismus, and progressed to death within four and six days of hospitalization. Because of normal CSF findings (including ventricular fluid in one patient) and negative culture results of both blood and CSF, the diagnosis was not suspected. Listeriosis should be considered early in any febrile patient presenting with signs o

Maternal consumption of alcohol and drugs during pregnancy can compromise neural development with long-lasting impact on individuals' health. The inhibitor of growth (ING) family of proteins is an epigenetic regulator that plays a central role in fetal brain development, contributing to neural stem cell maintenance, neuronal differentiation, and the regulation of genes involved in brain morphogenesis. Given the susceptibility of the developing nervous system to epigenetic dysregulation induced by alcohol and drugs, this narrative study aims to summarize literature evidence with the hypothesis

Diffuse gliomas have been hypothesized to originate from neural stem cells in the subventricular zone and develop along previously healthy brain networks. Here, we evaluated these hypotheses by mapping independent sources of glioma localization and determining their relationships with neurogenic niches, genetic markers and large-scale connectivity networks. By applying independent component analysis to lesion data from 242 adult patients with high- and low-grade glioma, we identified three lesion covariance networks, which reflect clusters of frequent glioma localization. Replicability of the

BACKGROUND: Germinal matrix-intraventricular haemorrhage (GMH-IVH) remains a substantial issue in neonatal intensive care units worldwide. Current therapies to prevent or treat GMH-IVH are limited. Stem cell-based therapies offer a potential therapeutic approach to repair, restore, and/or regenerate injured brain tissue. These preclinical findings have now culminated in ongoing human neonatal studies.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the benefits and harms of stem cell-based interventions for prevention or treatment of germinal matrix-intraventricular haemorrhage (GM-IVH) in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: The main cause of progressive vision impairment in retinal degenerative diseases is the dysfunction of photoreceptors and the underlying retinal pigment epithelial cells. The inadequate regenerative capacity of the neural retina and lack of established therapeutic options demand the development of clinical-grade protocols to halt the degenerative process in the eye or replace the damaged cells by using stem cell-derived products. Recently, stem cell-based regenerative therapies have been at the forefront of clinical investigations for retinal dystrophies.

Secreted by the pineal gland to regulate the circadian rhythm, melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that has been used to combat oxidative stress in the central nervous system. Melatonin-based therapies have been shown to provide neuroprotective effects in the setting of ischemic stroke by mitigating neuroinflammation and accelerating brain tissue restoration. Melatonin treatment includes injection of exogenous melatonin, pineal gland grafting and melatonin-mediated stem cell therapy. This review will discuss the current preclinical and clinical studies investigating melatonin-based therapeutic

Gliomatosis cerebri is a rare subtype of glioma involving more than three lobes of the central nervous system. Currently, diagnosis of gliomatosis cerebri can be confirmed pathologically, surgically, or with magnetic resonance imaging that shows high-signal areas expanding to the cerebral hemisphere, brain stem, cerebellum, and spinal cord. Although this disease has great clinical importance, it has recently been removed from the revised WHO classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System (2016) owing to divergence between its morphological features and molecular profiles.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. We present a case of a 56-year-old male with ECD. As time progressed, involvement of the orbital fossa, cranial convexity, spinal cord, brain stem, thyroid, lung, retroperitoneum, lower extremity bones and skin were found. Previously reported cases reveal the frequency of ECD with spinal cord involvement is rare. Although this was a presumed diagnosis based on other lesions, our case is the first in which both intramedullary and epidural masses are present.

Acute adrenal insufficiency is a life threatening disease with dehydration, hypotension, cerebral dysfunction and gastrointestinal symptoms accompanied by low plasma sodium and high plasma potassium. Osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS) can occur rarely following correction of plasma sodium. We describe a case with extremely low plasma sodium and subsequent development of ODS. Correction which is too slow may lead to cerebral oedema, brain stem herniation and low sodium encephalopathy. Correction which is too fast may cause ODS. The dilemma is accentuated by concomitant Addison crisis.

An autopsy case of Creutzfeld-Jacob disease with widespread amyloid plaques is reported. A 45-year-old Japanese man, whose father had died of a similar disease, had a 5-year illness characterized by progressive cerebellar signs. Mental changes and brain-stem signs developed in the late stage. Myoclonus frequently occurred. Akinetic mutism ensued. The autopsy revealed spongiform encephalopathy with widespread amyloid plaques and extensive degeneration of the white matter. This disease, Western Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease and panencephalopathic type of Creutzfeld-Jacob disease are dis

Fibrin tissue adhesive was injected into the right ears of four 7-week-old CBA/J mice. Auditory brain stem responses (ABRs) were used to monitor changes in auditory sensitivity over the next 26 days, after which the middle ears and cochleas were examined histologically. Mean maximum ABR threshold shifts were as great as 36 dB, and were larger for higher frequencies than for lower. Maximum shifts occurred between 1 and 8 days; by 26 days, thresholds had returned to intensity levels observed before injection.
