Alzheimer disease is a progressive, neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid beta plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau proteins. Alzheimer disease affects cognitive function, leading to memory loss and impairment in activities of daily living. Approximately 6.9 million people in the United States 65 years and older live with Alzheimer disease, a number expected to double by 2060. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer disease, treatments are available to manage symptoms. Tools such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed., criteria ai

BACKGROUND: Impaired driving ability in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with a decline in cognitive processes and a deterioration of their basic sensory visual functions. Although a variety of ocular abnormalities have been described in patients with AD, little is known about the impact of those visual disorders on their driving performance.
AIM: Aim of this mini-review is to provide an update on the driving ability of patients with dementia and summarize the primary visual disorders affecting their driving behavior.
METHODS: Databases were screened for studies investiga

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder, related to rigidity, bradykinesia, and resting tremors, among other motor symptoms. It is noticed in the increasing frequency of neuropsychiatric disorders, which may be also caused by non-motor symptoms of PD. Treatment of PD is usually based on the classification of motor subtypes; however, it remains unclear whether motor subtypes have differences in the severity of psychiatric symptoms. It determines the importance of discovering possible neuropsychiatric subtypes of PD. We conducted a clinical study, which included group 1 - patients wi

Central infusion of the Na+/K+-ATPase inhibitor, ouabain in rats serves as an animal model of mania because it leads to hyperactivity, as well as reproduces ion dysregulation and reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels similar to that observed in bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is also associated with cognitive inflexibility and working memory deficits. It is unknown whether ouabain treatment in rats leads to similar cognitive flexibility and working memory deficits. The present study examined the effects of an intracerebral ventricular infusion of ouabain in rats on spontan

It has been asserted that children with mathematics learning difficulties (MLD) constitute a heterogeneous group. To date, most researchers have investigated differences between predefined MLD subtypes. Specifically MLD children are frequently categorized a priori into groups based on the presence or absence of an additional disorder, such as a reading disorder, to examine cognitive differences between MLD subtypes. In the current study 226 third to six grade children (M age=131 months) with MLD completed a selection of number specific and general cognitive measures. The data driven approach w

Cortical areas supporting cognitive control and salience demonstrate different neural responses to visual food cues in patients with eating disorders. This top-down cognitive control, which interacts with bottom-up appetitive responses, is tightly integrated not only in task conditions but also in the resting-state. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) is a key node of a large-scale network that is involved in self-referential processing and cognitive control. We investigated resting-state functional connectivity of the dACC and hypothesized that altered connectivity would be demonstrat

Trait anger is a personality construct that refers to stable individual differences in the propensity to experience anger as an emotional state. The objective of this paper is to review relevant empirical studies in order to determine whether the transdiagnostic cognitive processes that have been identified across the DSM-IV Axis I disorders (specifically, selective attention, memory biases, reasoning biases and recurrent negative thinking) are also an underlying characteristic of high trait anger. On the basis of the review it is concluded that, whilst the research base is limited, there is g

BACKGROUND: Individuals with pathologic skin picking (PSP) often report significant difficulty resisting the urges and drive to engage in picking behavior. Studies have shown significant inhibitory deficiencies (i.e. increased impulsivity) in subjects with other putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, such as trichotillomania, using objective tests. This study sought to assess motor inhibitory control and aspects of cognitive flexibility in a sample of individuals with PSP.
METHOD: Twenty subjects with PSP (mean age 33.1+/-14.3 years; 85% female) and 20 healthy controls (mean age 31

BACKGROUND: A recent meta-analysis has found that patients who have achieved remission of major depressive disorder (MDD) show cognitive dysfunction. Moreover, anticholinergic activity levels are associated with cognitive dysfunction, although the extent of these effects is unclear. Therefore, we measured serum anticholinergic activity (SAA) in blood samples of patients with remitted MDD and examined its relationship with cognitive function.
METHODS: We recruited 49 patients with remitted MDD following treatment and 165 healthy subjects. Subjects completed the Stroop test and the logical memo

Fredrick et al. (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2022) showed in their cross-sectional and observational study that higher Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) traits were associated with more impaired subjective and objective sleep parameters. Importantly, data were gathered from adolescents and their parents, thus, enhancing the validity of the findings. In addition, the observed pattern of associations was unrelated to ADHD traits, age, sex, medication, or pubertal development. In the present commentary, we acknowledge the scientific value and practical and clinical implications of th

BACKGROUND: Sleep phenotypes have been reported to be associated with cognitive ageing outcomes. However, there is limited research using genetic variants as proxies for sleep traits to study their associations. We estimated associations between Polygenic Risk Scores (PRSs) for sleep duration, insomnia, daytime sleepiness, and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and measures of cogntive ageing in Hispanic/Latino adults.
METHODS: We used summary statistics from published genome-wide association studies to construct PRSs representing the genetic basis of each sleep trait, then we studied the associa

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate ester, DHEAS, are the most abundant steroid hormones in the humans. However, their physiological significance, their mechanisms of action and their possible roles as treatment are not fully clarified. Biological actions of DHEA(S) in the brain involve neuroprotection, neurite growth, neurogenesis and neuronal survival, apoptosis, catecholamine synthesis and secretion, as well as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiglucocorticoid effects. In addition, DHEA affects neurosteroidogenis and endorphin synthesis/release. We also demonstrated in a mode

Studies revealed that patients with paranoid schizophrenia display overconfidence in errors for memory and social cognition tasks. The present investigation examined whether this pattern holds true for visual perception tasks. Nonclinical participants were recruited via an online panel. Individuals were asked to complete a questionnaire that included the Paranoia Checklist and were then presented with 24 blurry pictures; half contained a hidden object while the other half showed snowy (visual) noise. Participants were asked to state whether the visual items contained an object and how confiden

A study was based on the survey of 419 neurologists and 1189 their patients with different forms of cerebrovascular diseases using a specially developed questionnaire. In most cases, vasobral was used as a monotherapy or in a complex treatment. Twenty-two percent of physicians reported that vasobral was the most effective compared to other drugs. The good tolerability of treatment (18%) and the broad spectrum of indications and clinical effects (17%) were reported as well. The large percentage (75%) of patients indicated the positive effect of vasobral on memory, reasoning, vertigo etc The max

We compared the relationship between regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of the olfactory area and the cognitive function and anosmia in patient with Parkinson disease (PD) and in those with Alzheimer disease (AD). UPDRS III, MMSE, HDS-R, CDR, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were employed in this study. The subjects included 56 PD patients (average age 71.4+/-9.69 years), 23 AD patients (average age 73.3+/-7.12 years), 12 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (average age 72.5+/-6.89 years), and 9 age-matched controls (NC) (average age 73.8+/-6.61 years). Next we intravenously injected

The present study is the first independent investigation of the Comprehensive Trail Making Test (CTMT; Reynolds, 2002) with both clinical and non-clinical samples. We examined convergent and divergent validity by exploring relationships between the CTMT and other measures. Discriminant validity was examined by comparing CTMT scores of non-clinical and clinical groups. Results indicate that the CTMT was largely unrelated to measures of processing speed and nonverbal reasoning, verbal processing, and psychiatric symptoms. The CTMT Composite score was able to differentiate between clinical and no

The recognizable patterns of human malformations have recently received much attention, particularly because of the decline of other diseases. Patients with a congenital malformation syndrome come to the Child Neuropsychiatrist for various reasons, such as: mental retardation of variable degree, learning disabilities, speech delay or absence of speech, behaviour disorders, various neurological impairment. Parents, however, seem to be mainly concerned about the prognosis of cognitive and psychological aspects. We have studied 83 patients with a specific pattern of malformations (35 affected by

Though Parkinson's disease is primarily defined as a movement disorder, it is also characterized by a range of non-motor symptoms, including cognitive decline. The onset and progression of cognitive decline in individuals with Parkinson's disease is variable, and the neurobiological mechanisms that contribute to, or protect against, cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease are poorly understood. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data collected from individuals with Parkinson's disease with and without cognitive decline, we examined the relationship between topological b

Pierre Janet's works on conversion disorders or dissociative disorders has mainly fallen to the wayside in favour of Freud's works. In the first part of this paper, Janet's conception of hysteria is discussed and his place in French psychiatry described. Different aspects of Janet's diathesis-stress approach are presented (particularly the pathogenic concept of fixed ideas), which refer not only to a conception of hysteria but also to traumatic (stress) disorders and other psychological disturbances. The second part of the paper details the varieties of Janetian therapeutic treatments of these
