Home Literacy Experiences and Shared Reading Practices: Preschoolers With Hearing Loss.

Home literacy experiences and observed parent and child behaviors during shared book reading were investigated in preschool-age children with hearing loss and with typical hearing to examine the relationships between those factors and children's language skills. The methods involved parent-reported home literacy experiences and videotaped parent-child dyads during shared book reading. Children's language skills were tested using the Preschool Language Scale-4. The results indicated significant differences between groups for home literacy experiences and observed parent and child behaviors. Par

Complex Language Use in Children With Hearing Loss: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Understanding what is known about the language profiles of children with hearing loss (CHL) is vital so that researchers and teachers can identify the specific complex syntactic structures that CHL may struggle to master. An understanding of which aspects of complex syntax pose difficulties for CHL is necessary to inform the kind of intervention that will facilitate learning complex syntax for this cohort of children. This scoping review aims to identify what is currently known about the complex syntax use of CHL who communicate through spoken language, and uncover gaps in the literat

Genotype and Phenotype Analyses of a Novel WFS1 Variant (c.2512C>T p.(Pro838Ser)) Associated with DFNA6/14/38.

The aim of this study is to contribute to a better description of the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of DFNA6/14/38 and aid in counseling future patients identified with this variant. Therefore, we describe the genotype and phenotype in a large Dutch-German family (W21-1472) with autosomal dominant non-syndromic, low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (LFSNHL). Exome sequencing and targeted analysis of a hearing impairment gene panel were used to genetically screen the proband. Co-segregation of the identified variant with hearing loss was assessed by Sanger sequencing. The phenotypic eva

The impact of COVID-19 on communicative accessibility and well-being in adults with hearing impairment: a survey study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 measures, such as face masks, have clear consequences for the communicative accessibility of people with hearing impairment because they reduce speech perception. As communication is essential to participate in society, this might have impact on their mental well-being. This study was set out to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 measures on the communicative accessibility and well-being of adults with hearing impairment. METHOD: Two groups of adults took part in this study, with (N = 150) and without (N = 50) hearing loss. The participants answered statements on a fi

Insight into the Natural History of Pathogenic Variant c.919-2A>G in the SLC26A4 Gene Involved in Hearing Loss: The Evidence for Its Common Origin in Southern Siberia (Russia).

Pathogenic variants in the SLC26A4 gene leading to nonsyndromic recessive deafness (DFNB4), or Pendred syndrome, are some of the most common causes of hearing loss worldwide. Earlier, we found a high proportion of SLC26A4-related hearing loss with prevailing pathogenic variant c.919-2A>G (69.3% among all mutated SLC26A4 alleles that have been identified) in Tuvinian patients belonging to the indigenous Turkic-speaking Siberian people living in the Tyva Republic (Southern Siberia, Russia), which implies a founder effect in the accumulation of c.919-2A>G in Tuvinians. To evaluate a possible comm…

Comprehensive pan‑cancer analysis of potassium voltage-gated channel Q4 (KCNQ4) gene across multiple human malignant tumors.

A large number of studies indicate that Potassium Voltage-Gated Channel Q4 (KCNQ4) gene is the cause of non-syndromic hearing loss, but there are few studies investigating the role of KCNQ4 in cancers and scarcity of comprehensive analysis of its involvement in the diagnosis, methylation, mutation, prognosis of various cancer types. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the anticancerous and immune effects of KCNQ4 in various cancers and its potential value in breast cancer. In this study, we explored the potential role of KCNQ4 in cancers using public databases and the R software for

[Effects of E-learning on Pharmacists' Recognition and Practice in Medication Education for Patients with Hearing Loss].

Pharmacists are required to provide and collect medication information based on patients' health literacy and communication abilities to provide effective pharmaceutical care. Due to a lack of understanding of hearing loss and awareness of the inconvenience that patients with hearing loss face, appropriate actions for effective communication in medication education are not fully implemented. An e-learning system consisting of two courses, a learning course and an evaluation course, has been developed. The learning course explains hearing loss and appropriate actions in medication education and

Targeting the Limbic System: Insights into Its Involvement in Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is originally derived from the Latin verb tinnire, which means "to ring". Tinnitus, a complex disorder, is a result of sentient cognizance of a sound in the absence of an external auditory stimulus. It is reported in children, adults, and older populations. Patients suffering from tinnitus often present with hearing loss, anxiety, depression, and sleep disruption in addition to a hissing and ringing in the ear. Surgical interventions and many other forms of treatment have been only partially effective due to heterogeneity in tinnitus patients and a lack of understanding of the mechani

Review and Perspective on Brain Bases of Tinnitus.

In advancing our understanding of tinnitus, some of the more impactful contributions in the past two decades have come from human brain imaging studies, specifically the idea of both auditory and extra-auditory neural networks that mediate tinnitus. These networks subserve both the perception of tinnitus and the psychological reaction to chronic, continuous tinnitus. In this article, we review particular studies that report on the nodes and links of such neural networks and their inter-network connections. Innovative neuroimaging tools have contributed significantly to the increased understand

A new paradigm of hearing loss and preservation with cochlear implants: Learnings from fundamental studies and clinical research.

In 2010 Cochlear initiated a coordinated preclinical research program to identify the factors and underlying mechanisms of acoustic hearing loss following cochlear implantation and device use. At its inception the program was structured around several major hypotheses implicated in the loss of acoustic hearing. The understanding of causes evolved over the course of the program, leading to an increased appreciation of the role of the biological response in post-implant hearing loss. A systematic approach was developed which mapped the cochlear implant journey along a timeline that considers all

Hearing loss and vestibular schwannoma: new insights into Schwann cells implication.

Hearing loss (HL) is the most common and heterogeneous disorder of the sensory system, with a large morbidity in the worldwide population. Among cells of the acoustic nerve (VIII cranial nerve), in the cochlea are present the hair cells, the spiral ganglion neurons, the glia-like supporting cells, and the Schwann cells (SCs), which alterations have been considered cause of HL. Notably, a benign SC-derived tumor of the acoustic nerve, named vestibular schwannoma (VS), has been indicated as cause of HL. Importantly, SCs are the main glial cells ensheathing axons and forming myelin in the periphe

Ménière's disease is a disorder of the inner ear.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ménière's disease is a disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and pressure in the ear. Its pathogenesis and optimal management continue to be the subject of ongoing debate. Although it is classically believed to be a primary disorder of the inner ear, some clinicians have hypothesized that it is a form of vestibular migraine. RECENT FINDINGS: Evidence supporting vestibular migraine in the differential of Ménière's disease includes overlap of symptoms, high prevalence of migraines in patients with Ménière's disease, and the efficacy

Modulation Depth Discrimination by Cochlear Implant Users.

Cochlear implants (CIs) convey the amplitude envelope of speech by modulating high-rate pulse trains. However, not all of the envelope may be necessary to perceive amplitude modulations (AMs); the effective envelope depth may be limited by forward and backward masking from the envelope peaks. Three experiments used modulated pulse trains to measure which portions of the envelope can be effectively processed by CI users as a function of AM frequency. Experiment 1 used a three-interval forced-choice task to test the ability of CI users to discriminate less-modulated pulse trains from a fully mod

Lipreading: A Review of Its Continuing Importance for Speech Recognition With an Acquired Hearing Loss and Possibilities for Effective Training.

PURPOSE: The goal of this review article is to reinvigorate interest in lipreading and lipreading training for adults with acquired hearing loss. Most adults benefit from being able to see the talker when speech is degraded; however, the effect size is related to their lipreading ability, which is typically poor in adults who have experienced normal hearing through most of their lives. Lipreading training has been viewed as a possible avenue for rehabilitation of adults with an acquired hearing loss, but most training approaches have not been particularly successful. Here, we describe lipreadi
